The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 90

Ch. 90 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

I wake up in the middle of the night feeling watched.

Not the vague sense of unease you get sometimes. Not paranoia. Actual, concrete, ABSOLUTE certainty that something is wrong.

I lie very still in bed. Listen. The room is dark except for pale moonlight filtering through the window. Theron sleeps beside me, his breathing steady. Across the room, Morgana and Saren are in their own beds. Everything looks normal.

But it's not.

Something is wrong.

I slip out of bed carefully. Move to the window. Look out at Skyreach's floating islands connected by their delicate bridges, illuminated by moonlight and magic.

And there, on a bridge two islands away, I see her.

Lady Seris. Standing perfectly still, talking with someone in shadows. Too far to hear. Too dark to see details of the other person.

But I can see them. See Seris's body language—not the warm, gentle advisor she performs during the day. This is different. Sharper. Colder. More real.

I need to hear what they're saying.

I close my eyes and reach for something I've been practicing since my gift awakened. Mother had water magic. That magic lives in me alongside fire. And water carries sound better than air.

I reach out with my water-sense. Feel the moisture in the air. The humidity between here and that bridge. I pull it together like invisible threads and USE it to carry sound back to me.

It's difficult. I'm not good at this yet. But I catch fragments of conversation. Pieces of words carried on water-touched air.

"...confirmed healing gift, very powerful..." Seris's voice. Clinical. Cold. "...mother was healer too, both dead now..."

The shadow figure responds. A man's voice, unfamiliar. "...three in Skyreach already, when do we move..."

Three? There are THREE gift-bearers here? Being hunted?

Seris: "...patience, she must not escape like the others..."

My blood runs cold.

Like the others. Meaning some gift-bearers GOT AWAY. Meaning she's been hunting people for long enough to lose some. Meaning this isn't new—this is PRACTICED.

The shadow man: "...The Shadow asks when he should—"

"Not yet." Seris's voice is sharp now. Commanding. "First I extract everything she knows. Then we eliminate her properly. No more mistakes."

I back away from the window. My heart is pounding so hard I'm surprised it doesn't wake everyone. My hands are shaking. My breath coming too fast.

She's not just connected to the organization hunting gift-bearers.

She LEADS it.

The Eclipse isn't some distant enemy operating in shadows. It's HER. Seris is the architect. The mind behind decades of hunting and killing and erasing people like me from existence.

And I just spent three hours alone with her in a garden learning healing techniques while she circled me like a predator playing with food.

I move to Theron's side. Shake his shoulder gently.

He wakes instantly—warrior instincts never really sleep. His hand goes for a weapon that isn't there before his eyes focus on my face.

"Ravenna?" His voice is rough with sleep. "What's wrong?"

"Everything." I'm still shaking. Can't stop. "Everything is wrong. We need to go. NOW."

That gets him fully awake. He sits up. "What happened?"

"Seris." I glance at the window. She's still on that bridge, still talking. "I saw her. Heard her. She's not just Eclipse—she IS the Eclipse. She leads it. She's been hunting gift-bearers for YEARS. And she's planning to kill me as soon as she extracts information about other gift-bearers in Cindravale."

Theron's face goes stone. That terrible, cold expression that means he's already planning violence.

"Wake the others," he says quietly. "We leave tonight."

I move to Morgana's bed. Shake her awake. Then Saren. They both come alert fast, reading danger in my face.

"What—" Morgana starts.

"We're leaving," I whisper urgently. "Right now. Seris leads the Eclipse. She's planning to kill me. We have maybe hours before she moves."

"Fuck." Morgana is already reaching for her clothes. "Fuck, fuck, fuck."

"Our weapons are confiscated," Saren says. His face is pale. "How do we fight our way out without weapons?"

"We don't fight," Theron says. He's already dressed, moving to the door to check the corridor. "We sneak. We use the darkness. We get to the lower city and run."

"Through a kingdom built on FLOATING ISLANDS with guards everywhere and no cover?" Morgana's voice is harsh with fear. "How?"

"The same way we survived Pyrstone." I'm pulling on my clothes, my hands still shaking. "By being smarter, faster, and more desperate than they expect."

We dress in silence. Move to the door. Theron checks the corridor—empty. The guards must have rotated shifts. We have a window. Maybe minutes. Maybe less.

We slip out. Move quietly through the halls. Everything is pale stone and moonlight. Our footsteps echo too loud despite our best efforts. We reach the first bridge leading down toward the lower islands.

And freeze.

A guard stands at the bridge entrance. Blocking our path.

For a moment, no one moves. Then the guard looks at us. Young man, maybe twenty. He sees our faces. Sees the fear and desperation written there.

He looks back toward the central island where Seris lives.

Then he steps aside.

"I didn't see you," he says quietly. "Go. Quickly."

We run.

Down bridges and stairs. Across floating islands. Lower and lower toward the ground far below. Behind us, I hear shouts. Alarm bells. They've noticed we're gone.

"Faster!" Saren urges. We're sprinting now. My lungs burning. My legs screaming. Down and down and DOWN.

We reach the lower city. Hit the ground level. And keep running toward the gates.

More shouts behind us. Guards mobilizing. But we're MOVING, fueled by pure terror and adrenaline.

We burst through the gates. The guards there try to stop us but Theron slams into one and Morgana takes down another with her bare hands and then we're THROUGH, running into the darkness beyond Skyreach's walls.

We run for hours. Until we can't hear pursuit anymore. Until we're deep in forest and darkness. Until we finally collapse in a hollow between trees, gasping for air.

For a long moment, we just lie there. Breathing. Alive.

"Well," Morgana says finally. "That went well."

I start laughing. Can't help it. Hysterical, exhausted laughter that has nothing to do with humor and everything to do with not being dead.

"We escaped," Saren says. Like he can't quite believe it. "We actually escaped."

"For now," Theron says grimly. "But Seris knows we know. She'll hunt us."

"Let her try." I sit up. My hands have finally stopped shaking. "We know who she is now. We know what we're fighting. And we're not running anymore." I look at each of them. "We're going back to Cindravale. We're going to warn Father. We're going to stop the Eclipse."

"How?" Morgana asks. "We're four people against an organization that's been operating in secret for decades."

"The same way we've survived everything else." I meet Theron's eyes. "Together. Stubborn. Refusing to die."

He smiles. Actually SMILES. "That's my wife."

"Not married yet," I point out.

"Close enough."

We rest for an hour. Then we start moving again. South toward Cindravale. Toward home. Toward the fight that's waiting.

Seris might be the Eclipse's leader. She might have decades of experience hunting people like me.

But she's never faced someone who has everything to lose and nothing left to fear.

She's about to learn that lesson.

The hard way.
