The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 107

Ch. 107 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

We gather in the council chamber that evening. Me, Theron, Morgana, Saren, Elder Mira, and the village council. Seraphine sits at the center with documents spread before her. Letters. Correspondence. Evidence she's been carrying for weeks while tracking us.

"Cassian has been Eclipse for at least a decade," Seraphine begins. Her voice is steady now. Certain. "Maybe longer. I'm not sure when he was recruited, but I found letters dating back twelve years."

"From who?" Elder Mira asks.

"Lady Seris of Skyreach." Seraphine pushes several letters across the table. "They're careful. Never use direct language. But once you know what you're looking for, it's OBVIOUS."

I pick up the first letter. Dated eight years ago. Read.

Cassian,

The problem in the eastern territories has been managed. The individual in question will no longer pose difficulties. Three others identified through our observer's gift require attention soon. I trust you can coordinate removal through your family's resources.

Maintain discretion. Recent mistakes have drawn unwanted scrutiny.

S.

My hands shake. "This is—she's talking about KILLING people. 'Managed.' 'Removal.' Those are—"

"Assassinations," Theron says grimly. He's reading another letter. "This one discusses 'purging corrupted bloodlines' and 'preserving balance.' Eclipse ideology wrapped in diplomatic language."

"How many letters?" Mira asks.

"Forty-seven." Seraphine's voice is hollow. "Over twelve years. Some years only two or three. Other years monthly correspondence. Always coded. Always careful. But the pattern is unmistakable."

I read more letters. Each one makes me SICKER. Discussions of "problems being solved." "Obstacles removed." "Targets eliminated." Praise for Cassian's "efficiency" and "discretion." Instructions to identify gift-bearers through his position in court.

"He used House Ashford resources," Seraphine continues. "Family connections. Political influence. To hunt people." She looks at me. "Including planning your assassination. There's a letter from six months ago discussing the 'hybrid princess problem' and how to 'resolve it cleanly.'"

I find that letter. Read it with growing RAGE.

The hybrid princess presents ongoing complications. Her gift awakening is confirmed. Recommend acceleration of timeline before she becomes too powerful. Competition provides ideal cover—crowded event, multiple candidates creating confusion, family tensions providing motive.

Coordinate with our shadow asset. Clean elimination preferred. Make it appear accidental if possible.

S.

"They planned it," I whisper. "The assassination attempt during the competition. This was SERIS ordering my death."

"Yes," Seraphine says. "The shadow asset is probably The Shadow—the Eclipse assassin with shadow manipulation gift. He shot the arrow that your warrior took instead."

Theron's face has gone to STONE. That cold, dangerous expression that means he's planning violence. "They tried to kill you with PLANNING. With COORDINATION. This wasn't opportunistic. This was ORGANIZED."

"Everything the Eclipse does is organized," Mira says. "They've been operating for over thirty years with systematic precision. But these letters—" She touches them like they're precious. "These letters prove everything. Prove Seris leads them. Prove Cassian participated. Prove the scale of their operations."

"There's more," Seraphine says quietly. "About Lucien."

I look up. "What about him?"

"Cassian tried to recruit him." She pulls out another document. "Letter from ten years ago. Cassian writing to Seris saying 'the hollow one shows promise' and 'his emptiness makes him ideal candidate—no conscience to navigate.' They wanted to use Lucien's condition to make him perfect hunter."

"Did he join?" Morgana asks.

"No." Seraphine's voice is firm. "I found Lucien's response. He refused. Not because he objected to hunting gift-bearers—he didn't CARE about that. But because he saw no benefit to himself. No advancement. No power. Just risk." She pauses. "He was hollow. Ambitious. But not EVIL. Just—empty."

"So Cassian used him differently," I say. Piecing it together. "Entered him in the competition. Hoped he'd win and marry me. Give House Ashford control of Cindravale."

"Exactly." Seraphine nods. "When that failed—when Lucien died—Cassian used the tragedy. Gained sympathy. Political power. Got appointed to your father's council." She looks at me. "He's been destroying your kingdom from INSIDE while hunting gift-bearers in secret."

The room is SILENT. Everyone processing. Understanding.

"Why are you doing this?" I ask Seraphine again. "Really. Why betray your family? Why risk everything to help us?"

She meets my eyes. "Because you were right about my brother. You saw what he was when I was blind. And because—" Her voice breaks slightly. "Because hunting innocent people for accidents of birth is MONSTROUS. My family is wrong. House Ashford is wrong. And I'd rather die with a clear conscience than live protecting murderers."

"You'll be a target," Theron warns. "Eclipse will hunt you. House Ashford will disown you. You'll have nothing left."

"I have nothing LEFT anyway." Her smile is bitter. "Lucien is dead. House Ashford is built on lies. My family hunts people. What exactly am I LOSING by choosing justice?"

"Your life possibly," Saren points out.

"Then I die doing the right thing." She straightens her spine. "Better than living as accomplice to genocide."

I look at Elder Mira. "Can we use this? The letters? As evidence?"

"Yes." Mira's voice is certain. "Combined with survivor testimony and Silas's confession—" She stops. "Wait. You don't know about Silas yet."

"Know what?"

"News arrived this morning. Ambassador Silas Cove of Aetherwyn has been exposed as Eclipse. A survivor identified him. Thalassa arrested him. He confessed." She pauses. "He confessed to everything. Membership. Operations. Implicated others including General Stone and Lord Thorne. But refused to name the leader."

My heart RACES. "So we have—we have proof now. Real proof. Not just testimony but CONFESSION."

"And these letters connect everything to Seris," Theron says, touching the documents. "Direct evidence that she coordinated assassinations. That she leads the Eclipse. That she—"

"Murdered your mother," Seraphine says quietly to me. "There's a letter. Twenty-one years ago. Discussing 'the healer queen problem' and how to 'eliminate while maintaining diplomatic cover.'" She finds it. Hands it to me. "I'm sorry. But you need to see this."

I read it with shaking hands.

The healer queen poses significant risk. Gift too powerful. Influence too broad. Must be eliminated before hybrid offspring awakens similar abilities.

Childbirth provides ideal opportunity—already weakened, medical access available through observer presence. Poison slow-acting, symptoms mimic complications. No one will question.

Coordinate with our asset in Cindravale court. Clean operation required.

S.

"She planned it," I whisper. "Seris planned Mother's murder. While pretending diplomatic friendship. While offering to observe the birth." I look up. "She was there. In the birthing chamber. She killed my mother while pretending to celebrate new life."

"Yes," Mira says gently. "And these letters prove it. Give you justice. Give your father closure. Give us everything we need to destroy the Eclipse."

"Then we use them." My voice is steel. "We return to Cindravale. We present evidence to Father. We expose Cassian publicly. We send this evidence to every kingdom." I look at Seraphine. "And we make sure Lady Seris faces consequences for thirty years of murder."

"That will start a war," Saren warns. "Skyreach will defend her."

"Let them." I'm standing now. "I'm done hiding. Done running. Done letting the Eclipse operate in shadows while good people die." I look around the table. "We have proof now. Real evidence. Confession. Documentation. Everything needed to END this."

"Then we end it," Mira says. "We return to Cindravale. We expose the Eclipse. We bring justice."

Everyone nods. Agreement. Determination. Purpose.

The Eclipse hunted us.

Now we hunt them. With evidence they can't deny.
