POV: Ravenna
I saw Morgana jump. Saw her glider catch air. Saw her disappear between platforms toward the lower city.
Then Saren followed. Both of them gone. Escaped.
"GO!" Theron roared at me. "JUMP!"
But guards were closing in. Seris commanding them. More coming from all directions.
If I jumped now, I'd be shot down before the glider caught air.
"Together," I said. "We go together or not at all."
Theron threw more fire. Creating walls of flame between us and guards. Buying seconds. "Ravenna—"
"TOGETHER."
He grabbed a glider. Grabbed me with his other arm. And jumped.
We fell.
Straight down. Wind screaming. Platform disappearing above us. Guards shouting. Seris's voice cutting through chaos commanding our capture.
The glider caught. Bamboo frame creaking under both our weights. Silk wings snapping taut. We jerked hard. Stopped falling. Started gliding.
Theron steered desperately between floating platforms. Using fire magic to create heat currents that lifted us. Kept us airborne when physics said we should crash.
Behind us I heard shifting. Felt magic surge. Looked back and saw her.
Whisper. Seris's dragon form. Pale silver-white with golden royal stripes. Beautiful and terrible. An air dragon in her element. Faster than anything. More maneuverable than gliders could ever be.
She pursued. Other air dragons materializing around her. Guards following orders. Five. Eight. Maybe more.
"We're not going to make it to ground," I shouted over wind.
"I know!" Theron angled the glider sharply. Dodging a bridge. Cutting between two floating gardens. "Hold on!"
We soared through Skyreach's impossible architecture. Between platforms connected by magic and engineering. Through spaces too narrow for dragons to follow easily.
But Whisper was smaller than most dragons. More agile. She followed. Gaining with every second.
Below us I saw the lower city. Saw two figures running into forest. Morgana and Saren. They'd made it. Were escaping on foot.
We just had to reach ground. Just had to survive long enough to land and run and—
Ice-cold wind hit us. Whisper's breath. Not fire. Ice. Freezing air that made the glider's silk go rigid. Made bamboo frame crack from sudden temperature change.
We started falling. Glider breaking apart. Fabric tearing. Theron's heat magic trying to compensate but not enough. Not against an air dragon in her element.
"Trust me," Theron said.
"Always."
He dropped the glider completely. And we fell.
I screamed. Couldn't help it. We were falling straight down. Hundreds of feet. Nothing beneath us except stone and death.
Then Theron shifted. Human dissolving. Havoc materializing. The massive red-black dragon catching me in his claws.
I shifted too. Let Ravenna dissolve. Let Solace come forward. The luminous white dragon with red fire veins materializing beside Havoc.
We fell together for three more seconds. Then Havoc's wings caught air. Solace's wings did the same. We weren't falling anymore. We were flying.
Behind us, Whisper roared fury. The chase was on properly now. Dragon to dragon. Element against element. Air versus fire and hybrid.
We flew. Away from Skyreach. Away from floating platforms and impossible architecture. Toward mountains. Toward cover. Toward any chance of losing pursuit.
Havoc was larger. Stronger. But Whisper was faster in air currents. Born to fly. Bred for speed. She gained on us despite our head start.
Other air dragons fell behind. Couldn't match Whisper's pace. But she didn't need them. She was Eclipse's founder. Ancient. Experienced. Deadly.
She breathed ice-wind again. Trying to force us down. Trying to freeze our wings. Make us crash.
Havoc countered with fire. Superheating air. Creating thermals that lifted us higher. Played to his strength against her element.
We flew into clouds. Using cover to break line of sight. But I could feel Whisper following. Could sense her through some awareness I didn't understand.
Then I realized. Her True-Sight. She wasn't following with eyes. She was tracking me with her gift. Seeing my healing gift burning blue in my soul. Following that beacon through clouds and darkness and anything else.
I reached through the bond to Havoc. Pushed images and understanding. Told him wordlessly that Whisper was tracking me specifically. That we needed to separate. That he needed to fly away while I led her elsewhere.
His response was immediate and absolute. A wall of refusal. Of determination. Of stubborn, loving insistence that we stayed together.
We weren't separating. Weren't splitting up. Stayed together or died together. No other options.
His conviction poured through the bond. Three weeks of choosing me. Of standing beside me. Of refusing to let me face danger alone. All of it crystalized into one unshakeable decision.
Together. Always together.
Fine. Then together we'd figure out how to lose her.
We burst out of clouds. Mountains below us. Jagged peaks and deep valleys. Dangerous terrain for flying but also offering cover. Places to hide. Places to lose pursuit if we were clever.
Havoc dove. Straight down between peaks. Using gravity to build speed. I followed. Smaller. More maneuverable. Able to fit through spaces he couldn't.
Whisper followed. She was built for this. Born for mountain flying. Cut through air like she was part of it.
We needed an advantage. Needed something she didn't expect. Some way to turn her speed against her.
Havoc dove into a narrow canyon. Walls close on both sides. Barely room to fly. He raked the walls with claws as he passed. Fire magic superheating stone. Making it unstable.
I understood immediately. Followed his path. Added my own fire. Smaller but intense. Focused.
Behind us, Whisper entered the canyon. Just as the stone began to crack. Just as superheated rock became structural failure.
The canyon walls collapsed. Tons of stone falling. Filling the space. Blocking pursuit. Burying anything caught inside.
We didn't stop to see if it worked. Just kept flying. Deeper into mountains. Looking for any valley or cave or hidden space where we could land. Rest. Figure out next moves.
Below us I saw something. A valley that looked wrong. Too green for this altitude. Too sheltered for this exposure. Trees that shouldn't grow here.
Magic. Had to be magic. Concealment or protection or something making that valley hidden.
Havoc sensed it too. We dove together. Toward the hidden valley. Toward whatever safety it might offer.
Behind us I heard roaring. Whisper had survived the collapse. Was still pursuing. Still tracking my gift's beacon.
We dove faster. Into the valley. Into trees that closed over us like shelter. Into magic that wrapped around us like a blanket.
And suddenly Whisper stopped following. I could feel her above us. Circling. Searching. But unable to see the valley. Unable to track through whatever concealment magic protected this place.
We landed. Both shifting back to human simultaneously. Collapsed on forest floor. Gasping. Exhausted. Alive.
"Did we lose her?" I asked between breaths.
"For now." Theron was scanning our surroundings. "But she knows roughly where we went. She'll search. Eventually she'll find this valley or we'll have to leave it."
"Then we rest now. Move later." I looked around at the hidden valley. At trees and grass and what looked like structures between the trunks. "Where are we?"
A voice answered from the shadows. "Somewhere safe. Somewhere Eclipse cannot reach. Somewhere gift-bearers hide from those who hunt us."
A woman stepped into view. Maybe thirty. With eyes that glowed faintly silver. True-Sight. The same gift as Seris but used differently. Kindly.
"Welcome," she said, "to the last refuge. Where those with gifts survive together. Where Eclipse has not yet found us."
She gestured. More people appeared from between trees. All watching us. All with that same slight glow around them. Gifts. Rare abilities. Everything Eclipse hunted.
We'd stumbled into a village of gift-bearers. Hidden. Protected. Surviving despite Eclipse's systematic hunts.
"You're safe here," the woman continued. "For now. Come. Rest. Heal. Then we'll decide what to do about the dragon hunting you."
I looked at Theron. Saw exhaustion and relief mixing on his face.
We'd escaped. Found shelter. Were alive.
Morgana and Saren were out there somewhere. Heading to the nomad camp. We needed to reach them. Needed to regroup.
But first we needed to catch our breath. Needed to understand what we'd found. Needed to figure out if this hidden village was salvation or just another trap.
We followed the woman deeper into the valley. Into the last refuge. Into whatever came next.
Together. Still together. Still alive.
That was enough for now.
