The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 104

Ch. 104 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

The messenger arrives during breakfast.

One moment we're eating peacefully in the village hall, laughing about something stupid Saren said. The next, Elder Mira is rushing in with a young woman I've never seen before. Water kingdom features. Dark hair plastered to her head from rain. Breathing hard like she RAN here.

"Princess Ravenna," the woman gasps. "I bring urgent news from Cindravale."

My stomach drops. "What happened?"

"Your father has been searching for you for weeks. Sent messengers to every allied kingdom. Posted notices. Offered REWARDS." She accepts water from Mira, drinks deeply. "But that's not the problem. The problem is THALASSA."

Of course it's Thalassa. Because my grandmother is a political nightmare wrapped in diplomatic immunity.

"What did she do?" I ask, already dreading the answer.

"Filed formal complaints with Aetherwyn's Council demanding your immediate return. Claims your father is holding you prisoner in Cindravale. That you're being denied your water kingdom heritage. That Aldric is an incompetent king who LOST HIS DAUGHTER." The messenger's voice is grim. "When Aldric refused to produce you—because he literally DOESN'T know where you are—Thalassa began political maneuvering."

"What kind of maneuvering?" Theron asks sharply.

"The bad kind. She's suggesting Aldric is unfit to rule. That Cindravale is unstable. That fire kingdom leadership needs to be RESTRUCTURED." The messenger pauses. "Tensions between Fire and Water kingdoms are escalating. There have been border skirmishes. Small ones. Testing each other. Nothing major yet but it's BUILDING."

Oh gods. Oh gods. My escape caused a diplomatic disaster.

"There's more," the messenger continues. She looks directly at me. "House Ashford is using the chaos."

My blood runs cold. "How?"

"Cassian Lucien has been appointed as advisor to the king. By council VOTE. Over your father's objections." She lets that sink in. "He's using your absence to push policy changes. Suggesting that hybrid prejudice laws should be strengthened. That rare gift-bearers should be REGISTERED for public safety. That the Eclipse might have legitimate concerns about—"

"WHAT?" I'm on my feet. "He's DEFending the Eclipse?"

"Not defending. Just—raising questions. Planting seeds of doubt. Making people THINK about whether gift-bearers really ARE dangerous." She looks exhausted. Scared. "It's working, Princess. People are scared. They don't know what to believe. And House Ashford is capitalizing on that fear."

Morgana swears viciously. Saren's face has gone stone. Theron's hand finds mine under the table. Grounding. Steady.

"My father," I say carefully. "How is he?"

"Desperate. Angry. TERRIFIED for you." The messenger's voice softens. "He sent me personally. Told me to find the hidden sanctuaries. To beg you to return and prove you're safe. To stop this political disaster before it fractures the kingdom completely."

Guilt crashes over me like a WAVE. I ran. I fled to save my life. And in doing so, I left Father to face political warfare alone. Left him vulnerable to House Ashford's manipulation. Left him desperately searching while his kingdom tears itself apart.

This is my fault.

"It's NOT your fault," Theron says quietly. Like he can hear my thoughts. "You were being HUNTED. You had no choice."

"I had a choice. I chose to run instead of staying to fight."

"You chose to LIVE instead of dying," Morgana corrects fiercely. "There's a difference."

"But Father—"

"Your father would rather have you alive and his kingdom unstable than you dead and everything peaceful," Saren says firmly. "Trust me. I know Aldric. He's terrified for YOU, not for his political position."

The messenger nods. "He made that very clear. Find Ravenna. Make sure she's safe. Everything else is secondary." She pauses. "But Princess, the kingdom NEEDS you. Your people need to see you alive. Need to know you're safe. Need proof that House Ashford's whispers are lies."

"What about the Eclipse?" I demand. "If I return, they'll try to kill me again. I'm safe here. Protected."

"Are you?" The messenger's voice is gentle but pointed. "Or are you just hidden? Because the Eclipse is still hunting. Lady Seris is still planning. And every day you hide is another day they consolidate power. Another day they eliminate gift-bearers who don't have secret sanctuaries to flee to."

She's right. I HATE that she's right. But she is.

"How bad are the border skirmishes?" Theron asks.

"Bad enough that Aetherwyn is mobilizing troops. Cindravale is responding in kind. No major battles yet. But everyone is TENSE. One wrong move and we have full war between Fire and Water kingdoms." The messenger looks at me. "Your return could de-escalate everything. Prove you're safe. Prove Thalassa's claims are false. Remove House Ashford's ammunition."

"Or it could get me killed," I point out.

"Yes," she admits. "That's possible too."

Silence.

Elder Mira speaks for the first time. "We cannot force Princess Ravenna to leave sanctuary. That decision must be hers."

"I know." The messenger bows slightly to me. "I'm not here to force anything. Just to deliver news and hope you'll consider returning. Your father needs you. Your kingdom needs you." She pauses. "And the gift-bearers being hunted right NOW while you hide in safety? They need you too."

That hits like a PHYSICAL blow. Because she's right. I'm safe here. Protected. ALIVE.

But how many gift-bearers are being hunted right NOW while I hide? How many are dying because the Eclipse operates unchallenged? How many could be saved if I stopped running and started FIGHTING?

"I need to think," I say. My voice sounds distant. Hollow. "Give me time to think."

"Of course." The messenger bows. "I'll stay in the village until you decide. Take whatever time you need."

She leaves with Mira. The hall is silent except for the sound of rain starting outside.

"Well," Morgana says finally. "Fuck."

"Eloquent," Saren mutters.

"I'm serious. This is—we can't go back. It's suicide. House Ashford controls Father's council. The Eclipse is still hunting. Thalassa wants to drag Rav to Aetherwyn. We'd be walking into MULTIPLE disasters simultaneously."

"But if we DON'T go back," I say quietly, "Father faces political destruction. The kingdoms edge toward war. House Ashford keeps pushing Eclipse-friendly policies. And gift-bearers keep dying while we hide in safety."

"You can't save everyone," Theron says gently.

"No. But I can try." I look at him. "Mother died saving me. Gave me this gift. This CHANCE. If I just hide forever, if I never use what she gave me to FIGHT—what was the point?"

"The point was you surviving."

"No." My voice is firm now. Certain. "The point was me LIVING. Not just surviving. LIVING. Fighting. Making her sacrifice MEAN something." I stand. "We need to go back to Cindravale."

"Ravenna—"

"I know it's dangerous. I know House Ashford will try something. I know the Eclipse will hunt me. I know." I look at each of them. "But what's the alternative? Hide forever while the kingdom tears itself apart? While Thalassa starts a war? While House Ashford uses my absence to poison everything?"

"You need a plan," Morgana says firmly. "We can't just walk in blind."

"No," I agree. "We need allies. Evidence. Proof of what the Eclipse is doing. Proof that connects Seris to murders. That exposes House Ashford's connection." I pause. "We need to be smart about this."

"Which is why we're NOT leaving immediately," Theron says. His voice leaves no room for argument. "We take time. We PLAN. We gather resources and allies and prepare PROPERLY before walking into danger."

He's right. As much as I want to rush back to fix everything, rushing gets people killed.

"How long?" I ask.

"Few days. Maybe a week. Enough time to plan properly." He looks at the messenger's retreating back. "Enough time to gather everything we need to fight instead of just survive."

I nod slowly. "Okay. We plan. We prepare. And then we go back to Cindravale and END this."

One way or another.

We're done running.
