POV: Ravenna
Father's private council chamber is smaller than the main war room.
More intimate. Stone walls. A single table. Chairs for maybe fifteen people. This is where he makes real decisions. Where trusted advisors speak freely. Where lies get exposed and truth gets brutal.
Where I'm about to destroy everything Cassian built.
We gather around the table. Father at the head. Me beside him. Theron on my other side. Morgana and Saren. Hadrian. Master Veyron looking grim. Lysander with his healer's calm. Elder Mira representing the village. And Seraphine under guard at the far end.
Trusted people. Mostly. As trusted as we can manage when half the kingdom might be Eclipse.
Father looks at me. "Begin."
So I do.
I tell him everything. Everything. Starting with the assassination attempt at the competition. The arrow meant for me that Theron took instead. My growing suspicion that it wasn't random. That someone was hunting me specifically.
I tell him about fleeing Cindravale when Pyrstone invaded. About discovering General Stone had shield gift—hypocrite hunting other gift-bearers. About escaping through mountain caves. About finding the hidden village of survivors.
"How many survivors?" Father asks quietly.
"Across all sanctuaries? Maybe two hundred." I watch his face pale. "Out of how many THOUSANDS killed, Father. THOUSANDS over thirty years."
His jaw tightens. "Continue."
I tell him about Lady Seris. About her appearance in Skyreach. About the training sessions where she probed for information. About overhearing her conversation planning my elimination.
"Seris?" Father says. His voice is strange. Distant. "Lady Seris of the Air Kingdom Council?"
"Yes." I lean forward. "She has True-Sight gift. Can see lies. Sense intentions. Identify other gift-bearers." I pause. "She used her gift to HUNT people like her. To build an organization dedicated to eliminating everyone with rare abilities. She's the founder, Father. She created the Eclipse."
Silence.
Lysander speaks for the first time. "Lady Seris was at the birthing chamber when Queen Elara died."
Everyone turns to look at him.
"She was there?" I whisper. "When Mother—"
"Yes." Lysander's voice is heavy with old grief. "As diplomatic observer. She said she wanted to witness the birth of Cindravale's heir. That it was political courtesy." He pauses. "I thought nothing of it at the time. She was respected. Trusted. A High Councilor from our ally kingdom."
"But?" Father's voice is sharp.
"But I always wondered how the poison got past me. How someone infiltrated the birthing chamber. How they knew EXACTLY when Elara would be most vulnerable." Lysander meets Father's eyes. "Seris was there. Had access. Could have administered poison while I was distracted helping with delivery."
Father goes WHITE. Actually white. Like someone drained all blood from his face.
"She killed Elara?" His voice breaks. "Seris—she was there. In the room. While my wife—while Ravenna—" He can't finish.
"She likely poisoned Mother personally," I say quietly. My hands are shaking. "Used her diplomatic status as cover. Made it look like childbirth complications. And then tried to kill me too—a hybrid baby with potential gifts. But Mother saved me with the crystallized scale."
"Gods." Father's hands clench on the table. "GODS. I welcomed her into my HOME. Asked her advice on kingdom matters. TRUSTED her." His voice rises. "And she murdered my wife while pretending friendship?"
"That's what the Eclipse does," Elder Mira says. "They infiltrate. They operate from positions of trust. They use respectability as camouflage for genocide."
Father is shaking. With rage or grief or both. Hard to tell.
"We need proof," Hadrian says grimly. "Accusations against a High Councilor from Air Kingdom require ABSOLUTE proof. Otherwise it's just speculation that triggers diplomatic disaster."
"We have circumstantial evidence," I say. Pulling documents from my bag. "Testimony from survivors. Patterns of killings. Confirmed Eclipse members." I spread papers across the table. "General Stone. Ambassador Silas Cove. Lord Thorne—your own Master of Coin, Father."
Father picks up documents about Thorne. Reads. His face goes harder with each line.
"Thorne has been stealing funds for over a decade," I continue. "Financing Eclipse operations. Keeping target lists. Coordinating assassinations across kingdoms." I pause. "We need him to testify. To provide records. To give us DIRECT evidence connecting Seris to murders."
"And what makes you think Thorne will testify?" Veyron asks. His voice is skeptical. "Eclipse members don't turn. They die loyal."
"Unless they have more to lose staying loyal than defecting," Theron says. "Thorne has family. Wife. Daughters. Grandchildren. If we offer protection in exchange for testimony—exile instead of execution—he might take it."
"That's a big IF," Hadrian mutters.
"Everything about this is a big if," I snap. "But it's better than nothing."
Seraphine speaks for the first time. "I can help with that."
All eyes turn to her.
"How?" Father asks coldly.
"Because I have letters." She pulls a packet from her cloak. Carefully preserved. Sealed. "Correspondence between Cassian and other Eclipse members. Including Lord Thorne. Coded language. References to 'problems being solved' and 'targets eliminated.'" She sets them on the table. "They're not direct confessions. But combined with survivor testimony and Thorne's records? They build a case."
Father takes the letters. Reads. His expression gets progressively more furious.
"Cassian," he says finally. His voice is ice. "Cassian Lucien is Eclipse. Operating in my PALACE. Advising me on policy while secretly hunting gift-bearers." He looks up. "How long?"
"At least five years," Seraphine says. "Possibly longer. He was recruited young. Lucien saw opportunity in Eclipse ideology—chance to eliminate 'inferior' gift-bearers and strengthen pure-blood supremacy."
"Of course he did." Father stands abruptly. Paces. "And I gave him POWER. Let him influence policy. Let him spread fear while I thought he was just—" He stops. "I was blind."
"You weren't blind," I say. "You were TRUSTING. There's a difference. The Eclipse operates by exploiting trust. By seeming legitimate while doing terrible things."
"That doesn't excuse—"
"Nothing excuses it." My voice is firm. "But beating yourself up doesn't HELP. What helps is stopping them. NOW. Before they kill more people."
Father looks at me. Really LOOKS. Seeing not his spoiled daughter but the woman who survived being hunted across kingdoms.
"You've changed," he says quietly.
"I had to." I meet his eyes. "The girl who left would have demanded you fix everything. The woman who returned knows WE have to fix it together."
He nods slowly. "Then let's fix it." He turns to Hadrian. "Bring Lord Thorne here. Quietly. Tell him I need consultation on financial matters. Do NOT alert him that anything is wrong."
"And Cassian?" Hadrian asks.
"Leave him for now. We deal with Thorne first. Get his testimony. THEN we confront Cassian with evidence he can't deny."
"And Seris?" Veyron asks.
Father's expression goes cold. "Seris is in Skyreach. Beyond our immediate reach. But I have allies. Contacts. Ways to apply pressure." He pauses. "She will answer for murdering my wife. For hunting gift-bearers. For everything. Even if I have to start a war to ensure justice."
"Father—"
"NOT now, Ravenna." His voice is absolute. "Your mother deserves justice. The HUNDREDS killed deserve justice. And I WILL deliver it." He looks around the table. "Whatever it takes. Whatever it costs. The Eclipse ends. NOW."
Silence. Because we all hear it. The promise. The THREAT. Father is done playing political games. Done being diplomatic.
He's going to war.
And gods help anyone standing in his way.
Including kingdoms. Including allies. Including EVERYONE who protected the Eclipse while it murdered his wife and hundreds of innocents.
This just escalated beyond anything I imagined.
And we're riding that escalation straight into chaos.
