The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 149

Ch. 149 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

The contractions start two months after coronation.

Middle of the night. Sharp pain ripping through my belly that has me GASPING awake.

"Theron." I shake him. "Theron, wake up—"

He's up instantly. "What—are you—is it TIME?"

Another contraction. Worse. I curl around my belly and try to BREATHE.

"Get Lysander," I manage. "NOW."

He's gone in seconds. I hear him shouting in the corridors. Footsteps running. Controlled chaos.

I'm having a baby. Oh gods, I'm having a BABY.

Lysander appears with half the healing staff. They help me to the birthing room—specially prepared, herbs burning, water ready, everything organized.

"How far apart are the contractions?" Lysander asks calmly.

"I don't—maybe five minutes?" Another one hits. I grab the bedpost and try not to SCREAM.

"Early labor," he confirms. "We have time. Breathe, Your Majesty. Deep breaths."

"Don't call me that right now," I gasp. "I'm not a queen. I'm a woman who's about to be TORN IN HALF—"

"You're both," Thalassa says, appearing in the doorway. "And you're going to be fine."

"You don't know that—"

"I do." She comes to my side. Takes my hand. "Because you're Elara's daughter. And Elara was the strongest woman I ever knew. You have her strength."

Theron reappears, pale and terrified. "What can I do? How can I help? Do you need—"

"Stay." I grab his hand. "Just—just STAY. Please."

"I'm not going anywhere." He holds my hand like it's the only thing keeping him upright. "I promise."

Labor is HELL. There's no other word for it. Just pure, unending HELL.

Hours pass. The contractions get closer. Harder. More BRUTAL. I try every position. Walk. Squat. Lie down. Nothing helps.

"Healing gifts don't make childbirth easier," Lysander says apologetically when I ask why my flames aren't DOING anything. "They can heal injuries after. But the process itself—that's just biology."

"Biology is TERRIBLE," I gasp. "I hate biology. I'm going to—" Another contraction. I scream. Can't help it. The pain is EVERYWHERE.

Theron looks like he's being TORTURED. "There has to be something—some way to—"

"There isn't," Thalassa says gently. "This is what mothers do. We ENDURE. For our children."

"Mom did this?" I look at her through tears. "For ME?"

"Yes." Her voice is soft. "And she would do it again. A thousand times. Because you were WORTH it."

Six hours. Eight hours. TEN HOURS.

I'm exhausted. Sweating. Shaking. The pain is constant now, no breaks between contractions.

"I can't," I sob. "I can't do this anymore. I can't—"

"You CAN." Theron wipes my face with a cool cloth. "You're the strongest person I know. You've survived assassination attempts and wars and HELL. You can survive this."

"This is WORSE than war—"

"I know." He kisses my forehead. "But you're almost there. Almost done. Just—just hold on."

Lysander checks me. "You're ready to push. On the next contraction—"

"I don't WANT to push—"

"Your Majesty." His voice is firm. "Your daughter wants to be BORN. Help her."

My DAUGHTER. My baby. The life Theron and I created together.

Okay. Okay, I can do this.

The next contraction hits. I push. Nothing happens.

Again. Push. Still nothing.

"Keep going," Lysander encourages. "You're doing beautifully—"

"I'm NOT," I scream. "Nothing is happenings—"

"It takes time," Thalassa soothes. "Elara was in labor for sixteen hours before you came. You're actually fast compared to—"

Another contraction. I push with everything I have. Feel something shift.

"Good," Lysander says. "Good. Again on the next one—"

I push. And push. And push.

Fourteen hours after labor started, I feel my daughter move. Out. Into the world. Into life.

She screams immediately. Loud. Furious. ALIVE.

"It's a girl," Lysander announces. Unnecessary. I knew already. I've known for months. "Healthy. Perfect. Ten fingers, ten toes, strong lungs—"

He places her on my chest. Tiny. Blood-covered. White hair already visible. Blue eyes—MY eyes—blinking up at me with absolute confusion about why the world is suddenly So bright and cold.

"Hi," I whisper. Tears streaming down my face. "Hi, baby girl. I'm your mom. And I love you. So much. So impossibly much."

She stops crying. Stares at me. Like she knows. Like she recognizes my voice from all those months of me talking to my belly.

Theron is SOBBING. Actually sobbing. "She's—she's perfect. She's so small. So—" He touches her tiny hand. She grips his finger. "Oh gods. Ravenna. We made a PERSON."

"We made a person," I agree. Can't stop staring at her. At this miracle.

Lysander works on cleaning her. Cutting the cord. Wrapping her in soft cloth. Then he hands her back.

"Princess Elara," I say formally. "Named for my mother. For the woman who sacrificed everything so I could live."

Thalassa is crying. Just standing in the corner crying and trying not to WAIL.

"Can I?" she asks quietly. "Can I hold her?"

I nod. She takes the baby carefully. Looks down at her great-granddaughter.

"You look like her," Thalassa whispers. "Like my Elara. White hair. Blue eyes. BEAUTIFUL." She closes her eyes. Speaks to the daughter she lost. "I'm sorry I held you too tight. Sorry I tried to control you. Sorry I made you feel TRAPPED." Her voice breaks. "But I'll do better with her. I promise. I'll be the grandmother you deserved to have as a mother."

"Mom would forgive you," I tell her gently. "She already has. She just wants you to be HAPPY."

Thalassa nods. Hands the baby back. Slips out crying.

Father enters. Sees the baby. STOPS.

"May I?" His voice is hoarse.

I place his granddaughter in his arms. He holds her like she's made of glass. Like she might BREAK.

"Elara," he breathes. "You named her Elara."

"After Mom. After everything she gave so I could be here. So SHE could be here." I wipe my eyes. "Is it—is it okay?"

"It's perfect." He looks at me with tears streaming down his face. "Your mother's legacy. Continuing. LIVING. This is—this is everything she wanted."

The baby makes a small sound. Father smiles. Actually SMILES like he hasn't in years.

"She's going to be extraordinary," he says quietly. "Like her mother. Like her grandmother. Like all the women in this family who refuse to be anything less than MAGNIFICENT."

***

Later, after everyone leaves and it's just me and Theron and our daughter, we lie together in the birthing bed.

The baby is on my chest, sleeping. Her tiny dragon is already trying to emerge—I can feel her shifting instinctively. Within hours she'll show her dragon form for the first time.

"She's going to be a hybrid," I murmur. "Like me. Carrying both kingdoms."

"She's going to be powerful," Theron corrects. "Like you. Beautiful and strong and absolutely impossible to stop."

The baby shifts. Shifts. Suddenly there's a small white dragon on my chest—luminous scales with faint red and blue veins visible beneath. Fire and water merged. SO SMALL. Barely bigger than my hand.

She blinks at us with bright blue eyes. Makes a soft chirping sound.

Solace ROARS outside. Approval. Pride. Welcome to the new member of our family.

"She's perfect," Theron breathes. His massive scarred hand touches her tiny dragon head. "Absolutely perfect."

"We made this," I whisper. "We survived everything. Found each other. Built this life. And now—now we have HER."

The baby dragon shifts back to human. Curls against my chest. Sleeps.

"I love you," Theron says. Not to the baby. To ME. "Thank you for surviving. For choosing me. For—for this. For our family. For everything."

"I love you too." I kiss him. "Thank you for being patient. For being KIND. For being exactly what I needed even when I didn't know I needed it."

We lie there holding our daughter. Broken people who found each other. Who built something beautiful from ashes.

"What happens now?" I ask quietly.

"We raise her." Theron's voice is certain. "We teach her to be strong. To be kind. To use her gifts for good. To bridge kingdoms like her mother does."

"We protect her."

"ALWAYS." His voice is fierce. "From everything. From everyone who would hurt her. From the darkness still out there."

Because it IS still out there. Seris and the Shadow remain at large. The Eclipse ideology survives. Dangers lurk.

But right now—right HERE—we have this.

A baby daughter sleeping peacefully. A family built on love. A future worth fighting for.

"Welcome to the world, Elara," I whisper to her. "Your grandmother sacrificed everything so you could exist. Your grandfather rebuilt himself so you'd have family. Your parents survived impossible odds so you'd have a home." I kiss her tiny head. "You're so loved. So wanted. So impossibly precious."

She sleeps on. Innocent. Perfect. OURS.

And I promise—silently, fiercely, with everything I am—that I will build a world worthy of her.

Where she can use her gifts openly. Where she's celebrated for being a hybrid. Where she never has to hide or fear or diminish herself.

Where she can be EXACTLY who she is.
