POV: Seraphine
I shouldn't be here.
I know I shouldn't be here. But I requested permission and—shockingly—King Aldric granted it. Maybe because I provided the evidence that destroyed my own house. Maybe because he thinks I deserve closure.
Maybe because he's more merciful than I deserve.
The guards let me through. Down the stone stairs into the cells where they're keeping HER. The woman who manipulated my family for years. Who used Cassian. Who destroyed everything.
Lady Seris looks up when I enter. She's still in those white robes, still chained, still calm like being imprisoned is just a minor inconvenience.
"Seraphine Lucien," she says pleasantly. "How unexpected."
"Is it?" My voice comes out harder than I intended. "You used my family. You used CASSIAN. Did you really think I wouldn't come?"
"I thought you might be too broken." She tilts her head, studying me. "After betraying your father. After watching your house fall. After losing everything." A pause. "Are you broken, child?"
"Don't call me that." I step closer to the bars. "You don't get to call me anything. You're a murderer. A monster. And you're going to DIE for what you've done."
"Yes." She agrees easily. "I am. But that doesn't change what I accomplished. What I protected."
"You didn't protect anything. You DESTROYED—" I stop. Force myself to breathe. "Cassian is being executed next week. Did you know that? My father is going to die because of the evidence I provided. Because I chose to do the right thing instead of protecting my house."
"How noble of you." Her tone is mocking.
"House Lucien is RUINED. Our name is synonymous with treason. With conspiracy. With EVIL." My hands shake. "And I did that. I destroyed my own family because you—because you USED us—"
"I didn't use anyone who wasn't already willing." Seris stands and walks to the bars. "Your father joined the Eclipse of his own free will. He BELIEVED in our cause. He understood that gifts corrupt. That hybrids weaken bloodlines. That the kingdoms need PROTECTION from those who would destroy them."
"He was wrong—"
"Was he?" She leans closer. "Tell me, Seraphine. Your brother. Lucien. What do you really know about him?"
I freeze. "What?"
"Your brother. The golden son. The perfect candidate." Her pale eyes gleam. "Do you know why Cassian was SO certain Lucien would win the competition? Why he invested so much in that victory?"
"Because—because Lucien was charming. Skilled. Perfect—"
"Because Lucien was ECLIPSE." She says it simply. Casually. Like she's discussing the weather instead of destroying my WORLD. "Cassian recruited him three years ago. Trained him. Prepared him to win Ravenna's hand and control Cindravale through marriage."
No.
No, that's not—that's a LIE—
"You're lying," I whisper. "Lucien wasn't—he couldn't have been—"
"He was empty, wasn't he?" Seris continues. "No emotions except for you. No real connections. No genuine feelings for anyone or anything." She pauses. "That made him perfect for our purposes. He could play whatever role was needed. Be whoever people wanted him to be. Because there was nothing real underneath."
"Stop—"
"Cassian wrote about it in his letters. About how USEFUL Lucien's hollowness was. How easy to direct. How perfectly suited to infiltration." She watches my face. "Shall I recite them for you? I remember every word."
"I don't believe you—"
"Letter dated three years ago." Her voice takes on a formal tone, like she's reading from memory. "'Lucien shows promise. The emptiness I worried about is actually an asset. He mimics emotion so perfectly that even I cannot tell the difference. He will be invaluable in placing Eclipse agents in positions of power. Starting with the Cindravale princess.'" She pauses. "Letter dated one year ago: 'Lucien understands the mission. He will court Ravenna. Win her hand. Marry her. And ensure that hybrids and gift-bearers are hunted from within the royal family itself. The perfect infiltration.'"
I can't breathe. Can't think. Can't—
"You're lying," I say again. But my voice breaks. Because it FITS. It all FITS. Lucien's emptiness. His perfect performance. The way he could charm anyone while feeling nothing—
"I have the letters," Seris says. "Cassian kept copies. They're in the evidence the crown seized. You can read them yourself if you don't believe me." She steps back from the bars. "Your brother wasn't just hollow, Seraphine. He was a weapon. And your father aimed him at the heart of Cindravale."
Oh gods. Oh gods, oh gods—
My legs give out. I sink to the floor outside her cell, shaking. Everything I believed about Lucien—that he was good despite being empty, that he truly cared for me at least, that he deserved better than what happened—
It was all a lie.
He was Eclipse. He was hunting Ravenna. He was planning to CONTROL her through marriage.
Theron killed him. Havoc tore him apart. And I've spent months grieving—
For a monster.
"He loved you, though." Seris's voice is almost gentle now. "That was real. The only real thing about him. He genuinely loved his little sister. Cassian wrote about that too—how Lucien's one weakness was his attachment to you. How it made him less effective. Less controllable."
I look up at her through tears. "Why are you telling me this?"
"Because you deserve the truth." She sits back down on the stone bench. "You destroyed your house for truth. You betrayed your father for justice. You deserve to know what you were really fighting against."
"I loved him—"
"I know." Something like sympathy flickers across her face. "And that makes it worse, doesn't it? Loving someone who was never really there. Who was always performing. Always hiding. Always wrong."
I can't stop crying. Can't stop shaking. Everything I thought I knew about my family is gone. Cassian was a fanatic. Lucien was a weapon. House Lucien was a front for genocide.
And I'm the only one left. The only one who wasn't—who didn't—
"What do I do?" I whisper. "How do I—how do I live with this?"
"That's not my concern." Seris closes her eyes. "I'll be dead soon. You'll have to figure it out yourself."
I stand on shaking legs. Turn to leave. Stop at the doorway.
"I hope you suffer," I tell her. "I hope dying hurts. I hope you regret everything."
"I told you already." She doesn't open her eyes. "I regret nothing. And I'll die knowing I did what was necessary."
I leave. Walk up through the corridors while my world CRUMBLES.
Lucien was Eclipse. My brother—my ONLY family who mattered—was part of the organization that hunted innocent people.
Everything was a lie. All of it.
***
I don't remember walking to Ravenna's chambers. Don't remember asking the guards to let me in. But suddenly I'm standing in her sitting room and she's staring at me with concern.
"Seraphine?" She stands from her chair. "What—are you all right?"
"No." The word breaks. "No, I'm not—I can't—"
I collapse. Just FALL to the floor and sob like a child. Because I have nothing left. No family. No home. No IDENTITY. Everything I was is gone and I don't know how to be anything else.
Ravenna drops beside me. Wraps her arms around me and holds me while I break.
"Lucien was Eclipse," I choke out. "Cassian recruited him. He was supposed to marry you and—and control Cindravale from inside. He was a weapon and I loved him and he was wrong—"
"I know," she whispers. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry—"
"I have nothing." I pull back to look at her. "My father is being executed. My brother is dead. My house is ruined. I have nothing left."
She takes my face in her hands. Forces me to meet her eyes.
"You have a choice," she says firmly. "You can let the past destroy you. Let what they did define who you become. Or—" she pauses "—you can build something new. Something better. Something that matters."
"How?" My voice is tiny. Broken. "How do I do that?"
"By helping me." She sits back. "The Eclipse is dismantled but the damage remains. The distrust between kingdoms. The fear of gift-bearers. The prejudice against hybrids. We need someone who understands that world. Who came FROM that hatred and chose differently."
I stare at her. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying I want to offer you a position." She straightens. "Ambassador between Fire and Water kingdoms. Using your House Lucien connections—what's left of them—for good. For building bridges instead of burning them. For proving that people can CHANGE."
"You want ME to be an ambassador?" I almost laugh. "After everything my house did—"
"BECAUSE of everything your house did." Her voice is intense. "You know both sides. You understand the hatred AND the redemption. You chose truth over loyalty. Justice over family. That makes you EXACTLY who we need."
"I don't deserve—"
"None of us deserve anything," she interrupts. "But we're here anyway. And we can choose what to do with the time we have." She extends her hand. "Choose redemption, Seraphine. Choose to build instead of destroy. Choose to be better than your family was."
I look at her hand. At the woman my brother was supposed to manipulate and control. The woman who's offering me—offering ME—a chance at purpose. At meaning.
At redemption.
I take her hand.
"Okay," I whisper. "Okay. I'll try."
"That's all any of us can do." She pulls me up. Holds me steady while I find my balance. "Try. Fail. Try again. Build something good from the ashes of something terrible."
I nod. Can't speak past the tears.
But for the first time since Lucien died—since my world fell apart—I feel something that might be HOPE.
Maybe I can't fix what my family did.
But maybe I can build something better from what's left.
Maybe that's enough.
