The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 128

Ch. 128 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

Thalassa arrives three days after I save Theron.

I watch from the ramparts as her delegation enters the capital. Water kingdom dragons in shades of blue and teal. Soldiers in ceremonial armor. Diplomatic advisors carrying documents. And at the center—THALASSA. Grandmother I haven't seen since fleeing Aetherwyn months ago.

She looks older. Thinner. Like the war aged her decades in weeks.

Good. Maybe she'll finally understand what her obsession costs.

"Ready?" Father asks beside me. He's dressed formally. King instead of father. Ready for negotiations that might save both kingdoms or destroy them.

"No," I say honestly. "But ready doesn't matter."

"It does to me." He looks at me seriously. "You don't have to face her if you're not ready. I can handle negotiations—"

"She'll demand to see me." I'm firm. Certain. "She'll insist on confirming I'm not prisoner. Not captive. Not—" I gesture vaguely "—whatever she's convinced herself of."

"Probably." He sighs. "Your grandmother is... difficult."

"She's obsessive. Controlling. Incapable of accepting that I'm not HERS to command." I look at him. "But she's also grieving. Missing Mother. Trying to hold onto me because she lost Elara."

"That doesn't excuse—"

"No. It doesn't. But it explains." I turn toward the stairs. "Come on. Let's get this over with."

***

The throne room is packed. Witnesses from both kingdoms. Aldric's advisors on one side. Thalassa's on the other. Neutral Air Kingdom observers mediating. Everyone formal. Everyone tense. Everyone aware this could go VERY wrong.

Father sits on his throne. I stand beside him. Not behind—beside. Equal. Princess in my own right. Not property to be negotiated over.

Thalassa enters with her advisors. She's dressed in water kingdom blues and silvers. Hair bound in elaborate braids. Queen instead of grandmother. But her eyes find ME immediately. And I see—gods, I see hunger there. And grief. And desperate need to reclaim what she lost when Mother died.

"King Aldric," she says. Voice formal. Diplomatic. "Thank you for receiving me."

"Queen Thalassa." Father's voice is equally formal. "We have much to discuss."

"Indeed." Her eyes haven't left me. "But first, I must see my granddaughter. Confirm she is well. Confirm she is—" Her voice cracks slightly. "Confirm she is here by choice and not coercion."

"I'm right here, Grandmother," I say. Step forward. "As you can see, I'm perfectly well."

She moves toward me. Fast. Like she wants to grab me. Pull me close. Reclaim me physically.

I step back. "Don't."

She freezes. "Ravenna—"

"I'm here by choice." My voice is firm. Carrying across the silent throne room. "Not captivity. Not coercion. choice. I chose to leave Aetherwyn. I chose to come to Cindravale. I chose Father over you."

"He corrupted you—"

"NO." The word echoes. "No one corrupted me. You were suffocating me. Trying to control every aspect of my life. Planning my future without consulting me. Treating me like property instead of person." I pause. "I left because staying meant losing myself completely."

"I was protecting you!"

"You were CAGING me!" I'm shouting now. Don't care about witnesses or diplomacy. "The way you tried to cage Mother. The way you tried to control HER life until she married Father and escaped your grasp!"

Thalassa's face goes WHITE. "Don't you dare—"

"What? Tell the truth?" I step closer. "You lost Mother when she chose Father. When she chose freeDOM over your control. And you've spent twenty-one years trying to ensure I don't make the same choice." My voice cracks. "But I DID make the same choice. Because I'm just like her. And I refuse to be caged."

Silence. Absolute silence.

Thalassa is crying. Openly. In front of everyone. Queen facade crumbling to reveal devastated grandmother beneath.

"I can't lose you too," she whispers. "I already lost Elara. I can't—I can't lose you the same way."

"Then stop trying to OWN me." My voice is gentler now. "Stop treating me like property. Like replacement for Mother. Like something to be controlled." I pause. "I'm not Mother. I'm ME. And I make my own choices."

"But you're choosing HIM." She gestures at Father. "Choosing fire kingdom over water kingdom. Choosing CINDRAVALE over your heritage—"

"I'm choosing MYSELF." I'm firm. Certain. "I'm choosing the life I want. The person I want to be. The future I want to build." I soften slightly. "But that doesn't mean losing you completely. It means—redefining our relationship."

"To what?"

"Grandmother and granddaughter who respect each other's autonomy." I meet her eyes. "I'll visit Aetherwyn. Regularly. I'll learn water kingdom culture. I'll maintain relationships with Mother's family. I'll—I'll TRY to bridge the gap between fire and water." I pause. "But I won't be caged. Won't be controlled. Won't surrender my freedom to make you feel secure."

"And if I can't accept that?"

"Then you lose me completely." My voice is sad but certain. "Because I won't sacrifice myself to ease your grief. Won't become prisoner to your fear of loss." I pause. "Mother wouldn't have wanted that. She'd want me to be free. To choose my own path. To LIVE instead of just existing in cage you build from love and fear."

Thalassa stares at me. Really STARES. Seeing me—maybe for the first time. Not as replacement for Elara. Not as property. But as person with my own will and choices and absolute refusal to be controlled.

Finally, she speaks. Voice broken. "You're so much like her."

"I know."

"Stubborn. Determined. Refusing to accept limits." She wipes her eyes. "Elara told me once that love means letting go. Means trusting people to make their own choices even when those choices hurt." She pauses. "I didn't understand then. I was too afraid of losing her."

"And you lost her anyway."

"Yes." The admission seems to cost her. "I lost her anyway. Because controlling her just pushed her away. Made her choose freedom over family." She looks at me. "I won't make that mistake again."

"What does that mean?"

"It means—" She takes a shaky breath. "It means I end this war. I accept that you've chosen Cindravale. I accept that you're not coming back to Aetherwyn permanently." She pauses. "And I accept that loving you means respecting your choices. Even when those choices hurt me."

Relief crashes over me so hard I almost fall. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet." Her voice is sharp. "I'm agreeing to END the war and negotiate peace. But there will be conditions. Terms. Compromises from both kingdoms."

"That's fair," Father says. He's been watching silently. Letting us have this moment. "That's more than fair."

"And," Thalassa continues, looking at me, "you WILL visit. Regularly. You will learn water kingdom ways. You will maintain connection to your heritage."

"I promise."

"Then we have basis for peace." She turns to Father. "King Aldric. Shall we negotiate?"

"We shall."

They move to the council table. Begin discussing terms. Borders. Trade agreements. Military alliances. All the complicated political STUFF that comes with ending wars.

I stand there shaking. Barely believing that actually WORKED. That honesty and firm boundaries succeeded where negotiation would have failed.

Morgana appears beside me. "You did it."

"We did it." I'm crying. Relief and exhaustion. "We ended the war."

"You ended it." She squeezes my shoulder. "By being exactly who you are. Stubborn. Honest. Refusing to compromise your freedom."

I watch Father and Thalassa negotiate. Watch them transform from enemies into—not quite allies yet. But not enemies anymore either.

It's start.

It's enough.

For now, it's everything.
