The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 146

Ch. 146 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

They hunt for weeks.

Dragons sweeping across borders. Spies in every kingdom. Rewards posted for information. But Seris and the Shadow are gone. Vanished into the wild territories beyond kingdom control where law doesn't reach and dragons can hide in mountain caves for YEARS.

"Nothing," Hadrian reports for the fifth week in a row. "No sightings. No traces. It's like they disappeared into smoke."

"They're shadow manipulators," I say tiredly. "Disappearing is what they DO."

Father looks older every day. The escape haunts him—that the woman who killed his wife is free. That justice was stolen literally during his daughter's wedding.

"We keep looking," he says. His voice is flat. Final. "Issue warrants across all kingdoms. Make them fugitives everywhere. They can't hide forever."

But maybe they can. Maybe that's Seris's final victory—escape. Freedom. Survival.

I'm so tired of thinking about her.

***

Life continues because it HAS to.

I throw myself into rebuilding. Into creating something good from the ashes of the Eclipse.

First priority: healing centers. I establish them in villages across Cindravale—places where people with injuries or illness can receive treatment from trained healers. Places where gift-bearers can work OPENLY without fear.

"This is ambitious," Thalassa says when I present the plan. She's stayed in Cindravale to help coordinate between kingdoms. "Healing centers require funding. Trained personnel. Protection."

"I know." I spread the documents across the table. "That's why I need Water kingdom support. Your healers are the best. Train mine. Help me build something that LASTS."

She studies the plans. Then nods. "Agreed. Aetherwyn will provide healers and funding. This is—this is good work, Ravenna. Your mother would be proud."

Something warm unfolds in my chest.

The trial did ONE good thing—it made gifts PUBLIC. People know now that rare abilities exist. That they're not evil or corrupt or dangerous. That they're just—just people with unusual talents.

Attitudes are shifting. Slowly. But shifting.

Hybrid prejudice decreases too. Because everyone saw Solace during the trials. Saw her transformation after Mother's scale. Saw her POWER.

Small silver dragons aren't weak anymore. They're VALUABLE.

I become a symbol. The hybrid princess with dormant water gift awakened. Who survived assassination attempts. Who helped end a war. Who PROVED that hybrids aren't diluted—they're BRIDGES between kingdoms.

It's exhausting being a symbol. But if it helps other hybrids live without shame—it's worth it.

Six weeks after the wedding, I wake up nauseated.

I barely make it to the washing basin before I'm vomiting. Theron appears immediately, holding my hair back.

"Are you sick?" His voice is worried. "Should I get Lysander—"

"I'm FINE." I rinse my mouth. "Just—something I ate probably—"

But the next morning, it happens again. And the morning after that.

Morgana finds me in the gardens trying not to throw up into a rose bush.

"How long?" she asks.

"What?"

"How long have you been sick in the mornings?" She crosses her arms. "And don't lie to me, Rav. I know that look."

I stare at her. Then at my own body. At the subtle changes I've been ignoring because we've been so BUSY and there's so much to DO and—

Oh gods.

"You're pregnant," Morgana says. Not a question. A statement.

"I don't—I might be—I haven't—"

"You're pregnant." She grabs my hand. "Come on. We're getting Lysander. NOW."

She drags me to the healing wing. Lysander takes one look at my face and Morgana's determination and sighs.

"I assume we're checking for pregnancy?" he asks mildly.

"Yes," Morgana snaps. "Check her. Tell her what she already knows but is too terrified to admit."

The examination is quick. Lysander's healing magic probes gently. His expression shifts from neutral to pleased.

"Congratulations, Princess," he says warmly. "You're approximately six weeks pregnant. Healthy. Strong. The baby appears to be developing normally."

Six weeks. That's—that's right after the wedding. Maybe even ON the wedding night.

I'm going to have a BABY.

Theron's baby.

Oh gods. OH GODS—

"Breathe," Morgana orders. "You're turning purple. BREATHE."

I breathe. Try to process. Fail spectacularly.

"I need to tell Theron," I manage. "I need—I have to—"

"Tell him tonight." Lysander pats my shoulder. "Privately. This is joyful news, Princess. Try to see it that way."

Joyful. Right. I'm bringing new life into a world where Seris is still free. Where the Eclipse ideology survives. Where gift-bearers are hunted and hybrids are prejudiced against and—

I'm having a BABY.

***

That night, I find Theron on the balcony staring at the city.

"Hey," I say quietly.

He turns. Sees my face. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing's wrong. Everything's—" I take a breath. "I'm pregnant."

He goes absolutely STILL. "You're—what?"

"Pregnant. Six weeks. Lysander confirmed it this afternoon." I step closer. "We're having a baby."

He doesn't move. Doesn't speak. Just STARES at me with an expression I can't read.

"Theron?" My voice wavers. "Say something. Please."

"A baby." His voice is hoarse. "We're having a baby."

"Yes."

"A BABY." He grabs me suddenly, pulling me against him so hard I can barely breathe. "We're having a baby. Our baby. A child. A—"

He's shaking. Actually SHAKING.

"Are you—are you happy?" I pull back to see his face. "Because you seem—"

"Terrified." His amber eyes shine with tears. "Overwhelmed. ECSTATIC. All of it at once." He cups my face. "We're bringing a child into this world. Into this world where Seris is still out there. Where dangers exist. Where—"

"Where we'll protect them," I interrupt. "Where they'll have family who loves them. Where they'll grow up safe because we'll make them safe." I place his hand on my still-flat stomach. "This is hope, Theron. This is future. This is everything we fought for."

He closes his eyes. When he opens them again, they're shining. "A baby."

"Our baby."

"I'm going to be a father." Wonder fills his voice. "Me. The five-time rejected warrior. The broken man. The—"

"The BEST man I know." I kiss him. "The strongest. The kindest. The most worthy." Another kiss. "You're going to be an amazing father."

He holds me close. We stand there on the balcony while the sun sets, both processing that our family is growing. That something good is coming from all the darkness.

"Boy or girl?" he asks finally.

"Too early to tell."

"Name?"

"If it's a girl—" I swallow hard. "Elara. After my mother."

His grip tightens. "Perfect. And if it's a boy?"

"We'll figure it out." I lean against him. "Together."

"Together," he agrees. "Always together."

Telling Father is—emotional.

He cries. Actually CRIES when I tell him I'm pregnant. That he's going to be a grandfather. That Elara's legacy continues.

"She would have been so happy," he says, voice breaking. "So proud of you. Of this." He takes my hands. "You're building everything she dreamed. Peace. Protection. Family."

Thalassa cries too. Says this is her second chance. That she failed as a mother but she'll be better as a grandmother. That this baby will know they're loved.

The news spreads through the palace. Celebration. Joy. Hope after so much darkness.

But late at night, when I'm alone with Solace, I admit my fears.

"What if I'm a terrible mother?" I whisper to my dragon. "What if I'm too broken? Too damaged? What if—"

Solace hums. Low and steady. The sound that means home. Safe. Loved.

"You think I can do this?"

Another hum. Certainty.

"Okay." I rest my hand on her scaled head. "Okay. I'll try."

Because that's all any of us can do. TRY. Build something good. Protect what matters. Choose hope over fear.

Six months until the baby arrives. Six months to prepare. To rebuild. To create a world worth bringing new life into.

Seris is still out there somewhere. The Shadow too. The Eclipse ideology survives in hearts and minds across kingdoms.

But here—right here—we're building something better.
