Mirabel's steps froze, her blood seemingly turning to ice. She didn't dare turn around, instead quickly entering the dressing room.
Sunny observed Mirabel's reaction and was convinced she was guilty. After her observation, she swiftly returned to Leo's office.
Leo came back after the meeting and saw Sunny there. He put down his documents and asked, "Any findings?"
"Yes. I suspect Mirabel. When I mentioned the culprits' confession, she turned as pale as a sheet," Sunny reported her discovery to Leo.
"Oh? Mirabel?" A cold gleam flashed in Leo's eyes.
"Just a suspicion. Can you look into it?" Sunny looked at him hopefully.
"If we have a target, there are ways," Leo said with a cold smile. "We can play a little game."
"What game?" Sunny was curious.
"Just wait and see. I'll arrange for someone to test her," Leo said confidently.
"You're not thinking of getting someone to pretend to be a police officer, are you? That would be illegal!" Sunny was alarmed.
"We're a film and television company. If she's innocent, consider it an audition; if she's guilty, it'll be sweet revenge for you," Leo thought of Sunny's injury that hadn't healed and a fierce look flashed in his eyes.
Sunny thought it was clever of Leo to come up with this method. It could test Mirabel and keep the matter within the realm of work. It seemed feasible.
That night, Leo arranged a man and a woman to pose as police officers and knock on Mirabel's door.
Mirabel was already on edge and had left the company early, canceling her dinner plans for the evening. On her way home, she tried to contact the gang leader but found his phone off, which heightened her fear.
Back home, Mirabel was restless, her fingers trembling coldly. She had previously wished for Sunny's downfall, but now that she was calm, she realized how foolish she had been to hire kidnappers.
If the plan had succeeded, Sunny might have withdrawn from the entertainment circle for good, but things had backfired. What had those two thugs confessed after being captured?
Fear hung over Mirabel like a dark cloud as she paced the living room, unable to sit still.
Then, there was a knock on the door.
"Ah..." Mirabel covered her mouth to stifle a scream. The knocking grew more urgent, sounding particularly eerie in the quiet night.
"Who is it?" She pretended to be annoyed and shouted, then looked at the surveillance screen and was instantly terrified—there were two people in police uniforms standing outside.
Mirabel's heart nearly stopped. Cold sweat dripped down her back, and her limbs shook. If she had been calm, she might have noticed something odd about their uniforms, but she was too flustered.
She opened the door shakily, and the two "police officers" showed their credentials. Mirabel didn't dare look closely and lowered her head in a show of compliance.
"We suspect you're involved in a kidnapping case. Please cooperate with our investigation," they said.
Mirabel's face turned pale.
"Do you recognize these two people?" The "police officers" showed her the photos of the culprits.
"N-no..." Mirabel denied it without looking, panic in her voice.
"Miss Field, you're denying it without even looking at the photos. Are you nervous?" one of them asked.
Mirabel realized she had slipped up. Her whole body stiffened, and she quickly glanced at the photos—these were the two thugs she had personally hired.
"You're shaking, and your face is pale," the "police officer" noted.
Mirabel forced a smile that looked more like a cry. "What else do you want to ask, Officer?"
"They've already confessed. Are you going to keep lying?" the female "police officer" asked sternly.
Mirabel completely broke down and slumped to the ground. "I didn't mean to hurt her! I just wanted to teach her a lesson, but I didn't expect them to use knives..."
Her hair was disheveled, and she wept bitterly. "I didn't tell them to hurt anyone. This was an accident! Don't arrest me!"
The "police officers" turned on a voice recorder to document her confession. "Why did you want to harm Sunny?"
Mirabel gritted her teeth. "She stole my man and my script! I worked hard for years to get where I am. Why does she come and take everything? And her pretending to be pitiful makes me sick!"
"Did you know they would use knives?"
Mirabel shook with fear. "No! I just wanted to scare her..."
After the recording, the "police officers" got up to leave. Mirabel suddenly had doubts and grabbed the female "police officer's" arm. "Let me see your ID again!"
The female "police officer" was startled, and the male one pushed her away. "What are you doing?"
Mirabel was furious.
"You're not real police! Who are you? Why are you pretending to be police and asking me these questions at my house? Don't you know that's illegal?"
"We'll tell you the truth. Actually, Leo sent us to audition you for your next role. Here's the script."
The woman suddenly pulled out a script from a document bag and handed it to her. "The theme is crime-solving and suspense. We're really sorry. We just wanted to help you get into character by asking those questions."
"What?" Mirabel's face flushed, as if she'd been slapped. All the blood drained from her face, and she couldn't tell what was real and what was not.
The woman took the opportunity to push her hand away and left quickly with the man.
Mirabel was in a daze. She stiffly closed the door and quickly opened the script. Sure enough, it was the company's newly signed popular suspense script.
"What's going on?" Mirabel's mind was in chaos. She couldn't make sense of what had just happened. If it was just an audition, then her answers would have revealed her true intentions, wouldn't they?
"This isn't an audition. They were just trying to get information out of me! Dammit, it must be Sunny who sent them. What should I do?"
