Mason narrates:
In these last three months I haven't seen Peyton, we talk less by messages since my mother said those words to me.
I clarify that it's not because I don't trust her, it's not because of that. I didn't tell her everything, I just told her that since there is a year left it is best that we don't see each other to avoid problems with my family and because of the contract. At first, she did not want to stop seeing me, she insisted on doing it on the sly.
I was firm in my decision not to see her for a while to avoid problems with my family. Also, since there is so little time left before the end of the contract time, I have taken advantage of the opportunity to mend the relationship with Paige, our friendship is closer than ever. We spend time watching movies or series.
My mother forced us to come to a dinner that we had no details about, when we arrive, I am surprised to see that it is in our honor, my mother since the day we spoke has been distant with me and more attached to Paige. It doesn't bother me that it's like this, it's just that I don't understand the reason for this dinner. I walk around, as soon as we arrive, I take off my wife. I find her looking at something and very surprised, when she tells me she is watching the surprised one is me.
I can't believe my eyes, it's Peyton and on the arm of an older man. Paige offers me to go investigate about it, but I refuse. I'm not interested tonight in finding out something I won't like.
After dinner she invited her to dance, what she doesn't know is that I take lessons to learn, just so I can do it with Peyton when we get married. If a white lie I told Paige, since she doesn't know it's for that reason.
The night progresses and at one point we stand very close, and I feel like I'm seeing her for the first time with different eyes.
After seeing her like that, I walk away uncomfortable with how she is making me feel. Smiling I take her hand and lead her to the bar for a drink. We both order a drink to suit our tastes and sit down.
Hours later I'm already feeling exhausted from all the dancing, I have to admit. Paige watches me and knows I've had enough.
"Do you want us to go home?" she asks me, and I appreciate it.
"Please," I reply, sighing.
"Let's go," she says, taking my hand, and we leave.
As we reach the car, I see that we're not the only ones leaving at this moment. Further ahead, I see Peyton walking arm in arm with the man she hasn't let go of all night. I pretend it doesn't bother me and continue walking to my car. Tonight, I'll be the one driving.
She (Peyton) looks at me, expecting me to say something. However, I just say goodbye to both of them and keep moving.
On the way home, I laugh at the things Paige tells me. She remembers my moves in the liveliest dances, which I'm not good at, but I like seeing her laugh, and it gives me a warm feeling in my stomach when I'm the one making her smile.
We arrive home and settle in the living room. I didn't drink much because I had to drive, but I pour myself a drink at home. Paige asks for one too, and we start watching a series on Netflix that we've been following. It's good, though it's hard to understand. It's called Dark.
I don't know how long we watch the series until I realize that Paige is asleep on my shoulder. I turn off the TV and then pick her up in my arms, taking her to her room. It's one thing to be close friends, but sharing a bed is another. Each of us has our own space in the house.
I have to admit that I find myself staring at her like an obsessed person when she's asleep. I like how she looks like that. She has a peaceful expression that makes me want to kiss her, but I'm afraid to do so. The kiss I want to give her is not on the forehead as usual; it's on the lips. My cowardice gets the better of me, and I end up kissing her on the forehead like every night before going to sleep.
That gesture has become a tradition between the two of us.
Then I go to my room, when I enter, I see my phone that tonight I didn't take to dinner. I pick it up to see the time and realize I have several messages from Peyton, I go into the WhatsApp app just out of curiosity and see that she was sending me messages throughout dinner, maybe since she saw me arrive or what do I know.
I am intrigued to know what I send, and I read them, the first one is telling me that she is invited to a dinner with a friend, that she committed to accompany him. Because in all these months she tells me everything she does, without me asking her to. The second one tells me that the dinner is the same one I will be at, the third one asks me to meet her in the bathroom. The fourth one I think she is already upset, by the way she writes, it's no longer my love or my life, it's "Mason, we need to talk" as she didn't have the phone with me, she felt ignored.
I don't read the others anymore, just seeing the angry face emoticons makes me not want to read them, I don't want to sour a quiet night regardless of seeing her arm in arm with someone else.
I thought I would be furious to see her with someone else, but my wife's company made everything else take a back seat. That has been making me think about the option that I may be starting to feel something like a liking for Paige. Maybe it's just confusion and the brotherly fondness I feel for her is growing.
