Leah's POV
"How's Lucas been doing?" Laura asked. "He doesn't come across as a man who would send girls flowers."
"His condition is worsening. I have to let him stay with me, otherwise, he will get weaker and weaker," I said and put those flowers into a vase.
"I'm not supposed to say this, but as your best friend, I have the obligation to remind you that you're having a very unhealthy relationship with your ex-mate," Laura frowned and said.
"What can I do? I can't just watch him die. He wouldn't move on with his life and I don't know where his second chance is," I said. "Even if I helped him to find his second chance, I don't think he would take it. He was so stubborn to take me back and refuse to sign our divorce papers."
"Maybe you should try to talk to him," Laura said.
"I tried. I really tried. But it seems whenever I tried to have a conversation with Lucas, it ended up with me getting fucked or he gets injured. It's like a curse," I covered my face.
"Poor Leah," Laura came forward to hug me and said. "What are you going to do with it?"
"I don't know. I think I'll just let everything stay the same way as it is right now. I also need to call Jorah to bring Lucas some clothes and his belongings. It seems that he will be staying with me for a really long time." I rubbed my forehead.
"Consider it done. I'll call Jorah right away," Laura said.
After the morning briefing, Laura didn't walk away. Instead, she lingered next to my table and said, "Leah, well... There's something I need to tell you..."
"What?" I looked at Laura with curiosity.
"Do you need me for tonight's business dinner?" Laura asked while batting her eyelashes at me.
"No. But do you have any plans tonight?" I threw some effervescent pills into a bottle of water and asked.
Laura blushed.
"Well, I kind of have a date tonight," she said.
"What? A date?!" I almost threw up the water out of my mouth.
"Yeah..." Laura said.
"With whom?!" I felt upset. My brother was out of town on a business trip for a few days, which meant Laura was seeing someone else!
"With a man," Laura turned crimson.
"Does this man have a name?!" I asked.
"I don't want to jinx it, Leah. We've just met and I'm not even sure if I should introduce him to my friends," Laura murmured.
"OK, I understand..." I felt disappointed. "But since you've just recovered from a terrible attack, I guess it's wise to ask some royal guards to go with you. They'll just sit around in proximity, minding their own business. They won't interrupt your date at all."
Laura frowned and said, "Is that necessary? I'm a grown-up woman now, Leah. I certainly am able to take care of myself."
"But Laura..." I said.
"Don't worry about me, Leah. It's just a quick dinner. I'll call you as soon as I get home," Laura said and walked out of my office.
Gean came inside and put a stack of files on my table.
"Send some Royal Guards to follow Laura tonight, Gean. Find out who's dating her," I said. "I have a bad feeling about this whole situation. My life is in danger and the last thing I want is to turn Laura into collateral damage."
"Yes, Miss Lewyn. Do you need me to look for the man who's endangering your life?" Gean asked.
"No. Darren's on it. I need you to do something else for me tonight," I said.
When I walked into the Galactic Polo Club, Alpha Kyle had already been waiting for me in the lobby.
"Miss Lewyn, glad to meet you again!" Alpha Kyle rubbed his fat palms together and grinned.
"Alpha Kyle, thank you for inviting me to your club," I smiled faintly.
"How do you like this place? Let me show you around!" Alpha Kyle stretched out his arm and placed his hand around my waist.
I held my disgust while I was walking with this old fat man, who looked like a giant bloating rhino.
This Polo Club was the tackiest place that boasted an interior design unlike any other.
I felt I was floating in a world of neon lights, glittery surfaces, and retro-futuristic details. Every wall was covered in iridescent silver wallpaper that reflects the colorful lights from the floor. All the large, giant, grotesque sculptures were vulgar and looked like a desperate display of the owner's personal ego or the extension of their dicks.
"Everything is gold and everything is worth more than 500 grand. Have you ever been to a place like this, Miss Lewyn?" Alpha Kyle gloated.
"As a matter of fact, no," I mumbled.
"I've heard so much about you," Alpha Kyle said with a lewd expression on his face. "Miss Dinara said you used to be an Omega and now you've become the VP of the largest company in the Kingdom! It takes a lot of hard work and aspiration to land in such an important spot. I personally have a special fondness for aspiring young ladies with ambition. I have never ever taken any women back to this club if you know what I mean. This place used to be a man cave."
Well, that definitely explained the level of the vulgarity of the arts. I thought to myself as I took a glance at a piece of bronze sculpture that was shaped like a vagina. Who the fuck made sculptures like this?
"Do you drink, Miss Lewyn?" Alpha Kyle asked.
"Yeah, but I'm a modest drinker," I said. "And I thought tonight we're having a business dinner. I don't think we can make any rational decisions with the influence of alcohol."
"All my best investments are done under the influence of alcohol. That's how a gentleman gets his work done. Miss Lewyn, my advice is that since you're doing a man's job in a man-dominated world, you have to start to do business in a man's way." Alpha Kyle said with a giant smile on his face.
This old fuck just couldn't wait to teach me something. I thought to myself.
"Now, let me show you my wine cellar," Alpha Kyle winked at me and said.
