"I want to eat the big cake. William spotted me and allowed me to go outside. I was so happy, I called her sister. When her friends asked who I was, she said..." Sara mulled over it. "She told them I was a servant's daughter."
"I was disappointed. I was crying when I asked Yen why would my sister treat me that way. He told me that I was an illegitimate daughter, therefore I was just a servant. It really upset me to hear my biological father saying that. I cried for a long time. For the first time, I lost my temper and flung a glass onto the floor." Sara looked up at the starry sky as she mumbled, "Master Bishop, they treated me badly, so I don't want to be good to them anymore. The world is simple. You are a good person. If someone doesn't understand you, it isn't your fault."
Hank was smiling. This little girl had made so much effort just to comfort him about his strained relationship with Madam Bishop.
His cold and cruel heart melted a little.
Hank kissed the red mole on her neck gently, "Okay, I get it."
Sara was speechless. Her neck stiffened and thought helplessly, "why did you have to kiss me when you get it?"
The red mole on her neck was very sensitive. Now that a man kissed it softly and gently, her heart was racing.
The moonlight illuminated them, with stars sparsely dotted on the night sky. The garden was so quiet that she could her Hank's breath.
In fact, she didn't tell him the consequences of her loss of temper. Lilly punished her by making her kneel on the broken shards of glass for the entire afternoon. The sharp glass fragments pressed against her tender skin and pierced into it. Lilly was sitting nearby, enjoying a cup of coffee while she listened to William say some interesting incidents at school.
After a long moment, Lilly seemed to only acknowledge Sara's existence. She glanced over and asked kindly, "Sara, does it hurt?Hmm?"
Sara, who was very young, didn't understand the malice. She subconciously said, "It hurts."
Lilly said, "Come over and let aunt have a look."
When Sara was about to get up, William pressed hard on her shoulder, pushing her back down and said with a smile, "Sara, who asked you to stand up? Mom wants you to kneel your way there. Hurry up."
Her knees were dripping blood, she could not stand up anymore. Sara bit her lip, knowing that if she did not listen, there would be even worse punishment awaiting her. She ambled over on her knees, as the broken glass made its way deeper and deeper into her flesh. The pain was gut-wrenching.
Lilly looked at her and smiled, "Oh you poor thing, it hurts a lot, right?"
Sara lowered her head and did not speak.
Lilly brushed her hand across her face and sighed, "Look, you've made a mess on the floor. So naughty. Clean it up or you'll make Aunt mad."
Sara was drenched in cold sweat from the pain. She replied, "...Okay."
Then, Lilly was pleased and smiled gloatingly, taking William with her as she left.
Little Sara was afraid of Lilly's scolding, she endured the pain on her knees. After she had cleaned up the blood and broken pieces of glass on the ground, she hid in the bathroom and used a pair of tweezers to take out the glass fragments in her flesh.
It was a gruelling and arduous process. For a several times, Sara's fingers were trembling so much from the pain that she couldn't even hold the tweezers. However, she gritted her teeth and endured it. It was because she wasn't William, she couldn't afford to be wilful. She only had herself to rely on.
She thought, "If not for the Lowell family's healing cream, she would have had ugly scars on her knees."
Master Bishop would have felt disgusted.
There was cold wind blowing, Hank hugged Sara tighter and said, "I was enlisted in the army when I was sixteen." His voice was strangely cold, but it sounded hoarse in the night wind, "At that time, no one knew me and took care of me. Like all of the other soldiers, I lived in big barracks, had meals with the others and fought on the frontlines."
"I was later enrolled in the National Security Bureau and experienced a lot of things there." He brushed over one of the gory and horrifying incidents that he had been through, "Once, when I was out on a mission, my comrade stabbed me in the chest with a knife. I almost died."
Sara was surprised.
He continued talking with a smile, "It wasn't my time yet." He narrowed his eyes and spoke coldly, "Yet because I was so close to death, other things are trivial matters to me. I don't really care."
Sara remembered the first time they met. There were scars criss-crossed on his back. There was indeed a large scar, around where the fifth rib was located on his left side. It looked like an old wound, but it was so small that no one would've thought it was a life-threatening injury at that time.
If it had gone in just a little bit more, it might have pierced his heart.
She pursed her lips and held his hand carefully, "Master Bishop... weren't you sad?"
Hank snorted, "Why would I be?"
There was nothing he cared about on the world. His life had been boring. Until one day, a girl as sweet as cotton candy came into his life.
The sweetness was irresistable.
Back in Mrs. Bishop's place.
Rose held the family doctor's hand in disbelief, "Are you sure Grandma has recovered?"
The family doctor nodded, "Yes, Miss Dior. You may appoint someone else to check on her if you don't believe me."
"There's no need." Rose said, letting go of his hand.
The family doctor of Bishop family was a renowned doctor, so the possibility of him making a mistake was nearly zero.
The family doctor sighed and spoke, "I really didn't expect that Miss Martin was so knowledgeable in medicine at such a young age! Thanks to her, Madam Bishop was saved. Miss Dior, you should thank her!"
She forced a smile, "Yes. I didn't expect it either... Yes, I should thank her. I will." Her eyes were brimmed with hatred.
Sara overslept on the next day. She had no time to eat breakfast, so she grabbed a carton of milk and was about to leave. She was stopped by Hank, "Finish your breakfast before you leave."
Sara was anxious, "But I'm running late!"
"That's because you glued yourself to bed." Hank led her to the dining table and told her, "I'll inform your teacher, so just eat now."
Sara was startled, "No, no, no! That would be awkward!"
If Hank were to go to inform the teacher personally... Sara could already imagine how Madam Percy would look at her.
She dared not to go against Hank. She quickly stuffed a bun into her mouth and finished it in five minutes. After that, she rushed to the school.
