Derek's POV
Alvin looked a bit anxious.
After taking a deep breath, he piped up, "If we don't handle it properly, we're gonna be in trouble. Professional hitmen would usually visit the site in advance, carefully planning how to take the target out and deal with the body. They'll never easily expose themselves or leave fingerprints behind.
"Rolf, on the other hand, is careless, which is why he ended up being the scapegoat.
"Alpha Derek, that bastard wore gloves, so he left no fingerprints. There's no camera, and Rolf just happened to be at the scene. Worse still, people have already started discussing this matter online."
I fiddled with my wedding ring, feeling calm and composed, totally different from Alvin.
"What did they say?" I asked lightly.
Alvin hurriedly replied, "Someone posted Tabitha and Lisa's conflict online, saying that we're abusing our power. Even news about Lisa's death got out. She wasn't famous, but the trouble she made before death plus our people being present at the scene made the news go viral online. Initially, people were just suspecting that we had something to do with her death. But later, they began to think that we killed her. Should we handle this right away?"
I lit a cigarette and then instructed, "Tell PR to hold off on dealing with any rumors for now."
Alvin looked confused. "Why? It's already in the headlines. The longer we wait, the worse it'll be for the Greenwood Group's reputation and stock prices."
I explained calmly, "There are two reasons. First, the matter has already escalated, and if we simply spend money to suppress it, it'll only make people think that we're guilty. Until there's solid evidence presented, no matter how we explain, no one will believe us.
"Second, we still can't be sure whether this was a coincidence or someone's plot against us. Thus, we need to think carefully before taking any action. If we react too hastily, we might fall right into a trap set by our enemies."
Hearing my words, Alvin thought for a short while before nodding. "Make sense. But I'm still worried about Rolf."
It was understandable, given how close they were.
"So what should we do now?" Alvin asked again.
I replied, "Dig into Lisa's past. I remember we've never had anything to do with her. Why would she come after us all of a sudden? Get me all the details about her family background and past experiences."
"Got it." Alvin nodded seriously.
I then gently exhaled a puff of smoke and continued, "Also, look into Austin."
This guy was no stranger to us. He was the mastermind behind Tabitha's premature birth and the death of my men back then.
Realizing what I meant, Alvin scowled. "That cleaner is Austin?"
"I wasn't sure before. But now I am."
After the attack on Tabitha, I'd gone through every detail of Austin's past.
That night, he managed to escape. But his leg was injured, and it would take some time to heal.
These days, I'd been putting out the word across all packs to hunt him down. But still, we had found zero leads.
When I passed by that cleaner just now, I sensed something off. That was why I asked Rolf to take a look, but I didn't expect him to run into a crime scene.
Alvin wondered, snapping me out of it, "But why did he kill a Z-lister? Didn't the Black Wolf Guild cancel their hit on Tabitha? Plus, what happened tonight would only have a slight impact on the Greenwood Group. It seems pointless for him to do so."
"I'm not sure." I rubbed my temples, feeling a bit troubled. My gut told me Austin didn't come after Tabitha this time.
No one could have anticipated that Tabitha would go to the ladies' room at that time.
Everything just happened so coincidentally.
After pondering for a while, I said to Alvin, "Send someone to the police station to smooth things over. Don't worry. Even if Rolf appeared at the crime scene, there's no evidence to prove that he killed Lisa, so they won't convict him for now. We still have time."
"Got it."
