Tabitha's POV
It took us a long time before we finally saw the baby's face. Apparently, its features were more delicate compared to those of the other one.
"Tabitha, she looks exactly like you. How nice! You're having a baby boy and a baby girl."
I kept wiping my tears. "The gender doesn't matter. I just want to see them healthy."
"Don't worry. They're both developing perfectly. I don't see any abnormalities at all. And I'm sure you can tell that they have different personalities, one being calm and the other being active. I'll export the video and send it to your phone later, so you can watch it whenever you want."
I nodded and said, "Thanks, Doctor."
"Don't say that. It's what I should do. Relax, Tabitha. You'll get to meet them soon."
"OK." After going through all the checks, I felt much relieved.
I showed Joanna the video, and she said happily, "Gosh! What a pair of cutie pies! I look forward so much to the day they're born."
I stroked my belly. "Me too. I'm gonna tell Dad the good news."
"OK," she said. Then she muttered to herself, "Guess I've gotta go get the gifts ready for the little ones."
My footsteps became much livelier as I walked to Dad's room.
"Dad, great news! The babies are developing healthily. It's a boy and a girl, and one is much naughtier than the other. Guess which is the naughty one?
"Surprise! It's the girl. The boy resembles Derek a lot in his appearance but not his personality. He loves to smile. I bet he's adorable when he smiles.
"Dad, you wanna see them too, right? Then come around. They both wanna meet you. You're their grandpa."
Dad's fingers moved slightly as if he was responding to me.
Noticing that, I held his hand at once. "Dad, I'm waiting to see the day you come around. We're family, and we're supposed to be together. Both my babies and I need you."
Meanwhile, Crystal prayed in my mind, "Hope to see John come around soon."
Derek's POV
That night, I received the video of the babies. I was overjoyed, even though I could only see their outlines vaguely.
I zoomed in and caressed the screen again and again, getting more and more excited about meeting them in a few months.
Someone knocked on the study door, and I coldly said, "Come in."
Alvin came back with the latest news, and he noticed the smile on my face, though it lasted for just a second. He said, "Good news of Tabitha?"
He knew she was the only one who could make me smile.
"Yes. I saw the babies' faces. We're having a baby boy and a baby girl."
"Alpha Derek, you're so lucky. Congratulations. I'm sure Tabitha is much happier when seeing them."
"What did you find out?" I quickly returned to the subject.
"I've got good news and bad news. The bad news is that Megan was devastated by the death of Mark and Holly and disappeared that night. No one has ever heard from her since then. I guess she's left Seattle already.
"The remaining members of Poison and Wolf Shadow in Seattle have gradually left, including Elena. And that person hasn't shown up yet, perhaps lying low or the mission got canceled."
In other words, all the trails were off. With Poison and Wolf Shadow gone, what had happened back then was completely buried like treasures in the sand.
"The good news is that our research team has figured out all the components of the M-1 medicine you brought back and developed it ourselves."
I frowned. "It says in the file that it has side effects, right?"
"Yes. I'm afraid we're still working on that. It has been troubling Poison and Wolf Shadow for a long time as well. Of course, as you know, there's no such thing as perfect medicine in the world. Even cold medicine and antibiotics have certain side effects."
Alvin saw the dissatisfied expression on my face and tentatively asked, "Alpha Derek, you're not thinking about using it, right?"
"I used to, but she's left already."
"You mean Elena? Alpha Derek, to be honest, though she's Zack's daughter, what she did..."
Alvin paused. I knew what he wanted to say and finished his sentence, "Is outrageous, right?"
"Kinda. If she gets caught, even you can't protect her. She's no longer the Elena you remembered. Instead of letting her stand in you and Tabitha's way, why don't you leave her be?" he suggested.
"I'll think about it. Let me know if you have any updates on her. Also, try your best to find out whatever you can about Tabitha's background."
"Understood. After all, it was twenty years ago, and all the leads are cold, so it's gonna be a little tricky. Alpha Derek, I'm afraid you'll have to give me more time."
I lowered my head to continue to watch the video of the babies and smiled, "Tabitha, don't worry. We can meet the babies in a few months."
