Between Four of Us

The Betrayal

Ch. 116 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

The spotlight in the empty theater flickered slightly as Evelyn paced the stage, her calm facade beginning to show cracks. Camille stood tall, defiance radiating from her, even as Evelyn’s men lurked in the shadows, weapons at the ready.

“You don’t understand the stakes,” Evelyn said, her voice sharper now, her earlier composure slipping. “The ledger isn’t just a record, Camille. It’s leverage. Power. Your father didn’t just document his dealings—he safeguarded secrets that could unravel entire institutions. If it falls into the wrong hands, it won’t just destroy you—it will destroy the fragile balance your father fought so hard to maintain.”

Camille’s gaze didn’t waver. “You mean the balance you’ve already destroyed by hunting me down? You betrayed him, Evelyn. And now you’re trying to twist his legacy into something monstrous.”

Evelyn’s expression darkened, her tone hardening. “You think this is about betrayal? Your father trusted me because he knew I was the only one willing to make hard decisions. He kept you in the dark because he knew you didn’t have the stomach for it.”

Camille took a step closer, her voice icy. “The only thing you care about is power, Evelyn. My father would have never handed the ledger over to someone like you.”

Before Evelyn could respond, one of her men stepped forward and whispered something in her ear. Evelyn’s face shifted instantly, her calm demeanor replaced by a stormy scowl. Her sharp eyes flicked back to Camille, her voice colder than ever. “You’ve underestimated me, Camille. And worse, you’ve underestimated Conrad.”

At that moment, the sound of deliberate, heavy footsteps echoed through the theater. From the shadows at the far side of the stage, Conrad emerged, his smirk as smug and insufferable as ever. The sight of him made Camille’s stomach churn, her hands clenching into fists at her sides.

“Well, well,” Conrad drawled, descending the steps of the stage to stand beside Evelyn. “Look at you. So brave, so determined. You really thought you could outmaneuver us?”

Camille’s husbands, standing near the entrance, immediately tensed. Matthew’s hand hovered near his weapon, his sharp eyes tracking every movement. Noah and Leo flanked him, their postures rigid as they prepared for the worst.

Camille squared her shoulders, forcing her voice to remain steady. “I’ll fight you both until my last breath. You won’t get the ledger, and you won’t control me.”

Conrad laughed, the sound grating. “Oh, Camille. This isn’t a fight you can win. You’ve already lost; you just don’t realize it yet.”

Evelyn raised a hand, signaling her men to close in. “Enough of this,” she said, her voice laced with irritation. “We’ll take her and the ledger now. End this once and for all.”

But before her men could act, chaos erupted.

The doors at the rear of the theater burst open with a thunderous crash. Smoke grenades hissed as they rolled across the floor, filling the space with a thick, acrid fog. Shouts and gunfire erupted as a new group of armed figures stormed the theater. They moved with precision, their faces hidden by tactical masks, but their target was clear: Evelyn and her men.

“Get down!” Matthew shouted, grabbing Camille and pulling her behind a row of seats as bullets ricocheted off the walls. Noah and Leo immediately flanked them, their own weapons drawn as they scanned for threats.

Evelyn’s composure shattered as she barked orders to her men. “Defend the perimeter! Do not let them take the ledger!”

Conrad, meanwhile, slinked back toward the shadows, his earlier bravado fading as he realized the situation was spiraling out of control. Camille caught a glimpse of his retreating figure, her blood boiling.

“We need to get out of here,” Noah said, his voice urgent as he helped Camille to her feet.

“We can’t let them take the ledger,” Camille insisted, her eyes darting toward Evelyn, who was now locked in a standoff with the masked intruders.

“We’ll deal with it later,” Matthew snapped. “Right now, you’re our priority.”

Reluctantly, Camille allowed them to guide her toward the exit. The gunfire and chaos behind them faded as they slipped into the night, their hearts pounding and their breaths ragged.

By the time they reached home, the adrenaline was beginning to wear off. The group was battered, their clothes torn and their bodies bruised, but they were alive—and for now, the ledger was still safe.

Camille sat at the kitchen table, her hands trembling as she cradled a cup of tea. Her husbands hovered nearby, their protective instincts still on high alert.

Miles away, in Evelyn’s now-abandoned office, a lone figure stood in the dim light, their face obscured by the shadows. The room was silent save for the faint hum of a monitor displaying surveillance footage of Camille and her family.

On the desk in front of the figure was a photograph: Camille holding her newborn daughter, Veronica. The photo had been taken recently, the edges still sharp and crisp.

The figure picked it up, studying it intently before setting it back down with deliberate care. Their voice was low, almost a whisper, but it carried an edge of menace.

“The child is the key now.”
