Tabitha's POV
What happened in the forest?
Obviously, Elena didn't just decide to bail on a whim. Someone must have approached her.
I was quite anxious, but I didn't dare to run out and chase after her. I was pregnant now, so it was safer for me to stay here.
Did Derek get shot?
Just as that thought crossed my mind, with a loud bang, a bullet zipped through the darkness, grazing past my cheek and embedding itself straight into the wardrobe behind me.
Startled, I completely froze, not daring to move an inch.
Just then, I saw a man on the hillside not far away. Since he wasn't using a sniper rifle, his range was limited, which gave me the chance to make out his silhouette pretty clearly.
The man was tall and slender, with a mask on his face, revealing only his eyes.
When his gaze met mine, I called out his name immediately. "Lucian?"
He didn't reply, just giving me one last intense look before turning around and disappearing into the woods.
That was when I confirmed he was Lucian, who had been MIA for quite some time.
We had spent some time together on that island. So I wouldn't have been mistaken.
He was a good shooter. There was no reason for his bullet to miss me unless he didn't mean to shoot me. That was to say, that bullet was nothing more than a reminder.
He was telling me that there would be danger in the direction I picked.
I took a few steps back and hurried out of the room.
Seeing Alvin in the living room, I rushed over to his side.
Perhaps noticing my pale face and sweaty forehead, he immediately set aside what he was doing.
"Tabitha, what happened?"
"S-someone was trying to kill me," I stammered.
I rubbed my belly, the mere thought that I could have been killed striking terror in me. If they sent another hitman instead of Lucian, I would've been dead already.
Fortunately, whoever was behind this came only for Elena. They had no clue I would be here too.
Lucian was trying to remind me that I was in danger.
Sure enough, there was more going on with Elena than met the eye. Maybe from the very beginning, she wasn't the only one who wanted me dead. There might have always been another one in this game.
Alvin, hearing my words, quickly took me to a safe room, where I was closely guarded.
"Send someone to chase after Elena. She knows all the truth. We have to find her ASAP."
"Tabitha, rest assured. Alpha won't let her slip away again."
"I wanna meet Elena's medical team."
Alvin shook his head. "Tabitha, I don't think that's a good idea. Since she managed to escape, someone from our side must've helped her. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been able to get away so easily.
"You told me that someone was trying to kill you. What if there is a mole in the medical team? I won't take that risk. You are pregnant now, so we need to make sure you and your babies are safe. Let's wait for Alpha Derek to come back before making any decisions."
"Okay."
I plopped down on the couch, feeling nothing but uneasy, my mind a mess.
Who else besides Elena wanted me dead?
I always knew Lucian wasn't an ordinary guy. Could it be that he was also one of those who tried to kill me?
I touched my belly, worrying if I would be able to safely give birth to my pups.
The wind howled, and I could hear gunshots from time to time.
Since Derek left in such a hurry, I'd never received any news from him. I wondered how he was doing.
After what felt like an eternity, Derek finally pushed the door open and strode in.
I instinctively jumped up, asking, "Have you found Elena?"
This wasn't just about Elena anymore. My life was at stake too.
"She got away."
"Poison and Wolf Shadow took her?"
Derek shook his head. "No, it was professional mercenaries."
