Rachel's POV
" Fine. " David said with a sigh bending down to pick up the papers he threw himself to the floor. " I'm only going to sign this because I want to prove to you that I've changed..." He took a step towards me and I rised a brow, my eyes telling him to take another step. " That I'm love with you Rachel". He said looking at me straight in the eyes.
I felt my heart actually flutter from his words, and I looked away from his intense gaze.
This can't be happening to me again.
I can't allow myself to fall for David again. He was a lair and a manipulator... He had fooled you before Rachel, get a fucking grip.
" Ahem... So sign it then". I said clearing my throat while taking a step back.
For fuck sake stop looking at me like that.
David nodded before he began checking his pockets , probably looking for a pen.
I blinked in surprise. "Aren't you going to read it thoroughly first? Probably get a lawyer to read it too and check for any extravagant clauses?" I asked him when I noticed he had brought out a pen and was about to sign.
He shook his head with a small smile. "I trust you". He said and I snickered.
He just said he trusted me? But why did that sound fake?
" But I suggest you still have a lawyer read it over first before signing". I said after a few seconds.
David just smiled "Why would I do that? You said that this contract doesn't benefit you in any way unless I cheat which I won't so, why waste time?"
Wow... He was using that tactic, okay.
Yes, truly the contract didn't benefit me in any real way unless he cheated, but their were some clauses in the damn papers that even got the lawyer that drafted it laughing.
It was not something to just sign without reading and complaining, but it wasn't like I was going to change anything so why care?
I shurgged coming back to seat by the tree's trunk. "Do whatever you want. " I said nonchalantly as I watched David sign the papers.
It was done.
I had cleared my conscience, and fulfill my last duty to this family, there was nothing David could do now, there was no way he could break off the alliance between the two companies even if he wished, and there was no way I was getting out of this marriage agreement now, unless...
There was this two last clause I doubt David read, it stated that if he suddenly just chooses to divorce me because of no reason or any reason at all, he would still have to keep the company's alliance, but I would be free, while the other one stated that, if my husband ' David ' hit me in any way, the marriage would immediately be over, he had to pay me a compensation of a hundred million dollars, but in everything the alliance between the two companies would stay the same.
This was my get away card in case David really wanted to be a good husband this time and I was not ready for it. I would just start doing stuff that would get him annoyed, so he would be forced to raise his hands in me, and then I'll be free.
"Here". David handed me the paper and I collected it with a smile.
" Thanks ". I muttered folding the contract neatly before putting it back inside my purse.
"So from now, we are officially engaged". I said looking back up at him, but David shook his head.
He shoved his hands into his pockets and brought out a small box " That's not how it's done. "
That couldn't be...
He suddenly knelt down on one knee and opened the small box. It was a ring... What was I expecting, a box of chocolate?
"Rachel Andrews... Would you marry me?" He asked hopefully.
My heart didn't even flutter and I raised a brow.
This was not how I thought this would go at all. I thought he would say something like;
Wear this ring Rachel, I've signed the contract so we need to make this work
Just the exact way he said it to me when we got married for real almost four years ago, But no, he was not saying any of that, in fact he was even asking me, not like I could say no anyways.
When he knelt down and opened the box, I had thought my heart would flutter and I would remember all the old days when I felt like I was the only lady in his sight. But no, I just felt embarrassment that he was going something like this. Thankfully no one else was watching... If he had done this in a public place, I would have actually fainted in embarrassment.
I got up from the ground, taking a good look at the ring, it was gold. A beautiful golden colored ring, made firm actual real gold with delicate crafted designs on them... It was really beautiful, but it was familiar.
"David there's no need to do this, I already agreed to marry you and you have signed the contract, so?" I gave him a questioning gaze looking between him and the box which contained the golden ring.
Just where have I seen this ring before? My brows knitted together as I tried to figure out why the ring looked so familiar.
I tilted my neck to the side, squinting my eyes at the ring.
I had seen it before that was for sure, but where?
" Yes, but I still want to make it official and do it the right way, since we're already getting married just take the ring". David answered as he urged me to take the ring, and after a few more seconds and I saw I didn't move, he took my left hand and singled out my ring finger, about to slip the ring into it when it suddenly dawned on me where I had seen the ring.
" Stop that!" I yelled taking back my hand before taking a step back.
I smirked looking up at David. " You gave that exact ring to Lana didn't you?" I asked him already knowing the answer.
The reason the ring was so familiar was because I've seen that exact ring on Lana's finger, actually for the first few months of the trip she consciously or unconsciously flaunted the ring to me.
That was how I even found out that she was engaged.
" What's so wrong about that? Don't worry, I had it washed and... " I scoffed stopping him from talking any further.
He wanted to give me the same ring he gave Lana and he wanted me to wear that shit? Hell no.
" Just stop. I want a new ring, one that Lana hasn't touched and possibly haven't see. "I said picking up my bag again and dusting it.
I had spent so much time here already, I only came to show David the contract and have him read it over and tell me his decision tomorrow, but he has already signed it so my work here was done.
" I need get going ". I said walking past David and out if the garden, which him just following beside me.
" You know, I never thought you would be so jealous because Lana had already worn the ring". David said with a small laughter as he caught up to me when I was about entering into the house.
Jealous of Lana?
Psssh
Just the thought made me laugh.
I would never be jealous of Lana, I just didn't want to wear something her filthy fingers had touched.
"Rachel..." Lana called out to me as soon as I entered the house.
Why did I even enter the house? I should have just left, but no, my feet unconsciously brought me back here to tell Martha goodbye.
"I can see that you and David are getting along again". She said again looking between David and I and someone I could sense spite.
Wait a minute, was she jealous of me and David even after she got Ethan?
