Damon walked into his bedroom and locked the door.
He frowned and thought for a moment before taking out his phone and dialing a number that he had not called for a long time.
After the call was connected, a teasing voice that was filled with contempt came through the phone. "Well, well, Beta Damon. It's been a long time since we last talked."
Damon frowned deeply. He said hastily, ignoring the man's attitude on the other end of the line, "Leonard just searched in the storeroom and took Gabrielle's address book. That was weird. Do me a favor and find out what he's up to."
"Beta Damon, you know better than anyone who Leonard works for. He's just a pack guard. What does he need the address book for? The only reason is that his boss has assigned him a new task," the man said sarcastically.
In the next second, anger emerged on Damon's face as he bellowed into the phone, "Gabrielle is dead! Why do they need the address book now?"
"Enough, Beta Damon. I'll stalk him and see what Alpha Patrick is up to." After that, he suddenly grinned and said, "But, Beta Damon, I'm curious. Does that make you a traitor now?"
Damon pulled a long face. He growled, "Mind your own business. I'm telling you, Ellison, you're not getting away with this either. You have an ulterior motive, while I am only avenging my poor sister who died young."
Ellison smiled, yet his eyes were filled with scorn and disdain.
He thought, 'You claim that you are avenging your poor sister who died young. Yet you have done something far more terrible than the murder of your sister.'
"Beta Damon, you don't have to egg me on. I'm only interested in benefits. I won't do anything that doesn't benefit me." Ellison saw through Damon's intentions.
Damon felt a little relieved after Ellison's verbal assurance, but he said it anyway, "You should show me a bit more sympathy. Gabrielle was my beloved sister. I'm sure you know what it's like to lose what's most important to you, right? Ellison, after all, you're supposed to be on top. Your last name should be..."
"Shut up!" Ellison gritted his teeth in anger. "Damon, who do you think you are? Do you think you can tell me what to do, just because you're the Beta of the Black Thorn Pack? It is none of your business what my last name is!"
Ellison slammed the phone down on his desk, and his eyes were filled with horrifying gloominess.
Ellison looked up, and his face looked very familiar. On his desk was a faced-down picture frame. He lifted and looked at the picture.
"Patrick!" He gnashed his teeth, while the hatred in his eyes was surging. He slammed his fist on the hard desk, clenched his back teeth, and said, "Just wait and see!"
At the same time, Leonard was walking side by side with Hank. Leonard asked, "What were you doing there?"
Leonard was ostensibly asking why Hank had been there, while, in fact, Leonard wanted to know why Hank prevented him from telling Damon the truth.
"Leonard." Hank stopped in his tracks. He faced Leonard and said, "You really don't know? Alpha Patrick asks you to look into that matter three years ago, while Beta Damon is Gabrielle's brother. If I hadn't interrupted you..." Hank's expression became more serious. He stared at Leonard in front of him and continued, "You were going to play along and tell Beta Damon what Alpha Patrick wanted, right?"
Leonard's expression changed. He retorted sternly, "What nonsense are you talking about? Why would I tell Beta Damon that Alpha Patrick was about to look into the case from three years ago again?"
As soon as Leonard finished speaking, he realized what he had said. His face went pale at once.
He did not dare to look Hank in the eye. He gritted his teeth and said angrily, "Are you trying to get information from me?"
"Leonard, if you let it slip, because you were negligent and didn't think through Beta Damon's conflict with this matter, how could I get the truth out of you so easily? You should know that Beta Damon shouldn't know about this. Leonard, I know you're upset about what happened to Gabrielle, but you're not Gabrielle's mate. Even if she were alive, nothing would ever happen between you and her," Hank tried to explain the situation to Leonard. He genuinely wanted what was best for Leonard and didn't want him to make a mistake.
Leonard's face was ghastly pale. He could not help but say, "Shut up! Of course, I know that I am not her mate. Stop the nonsense!"
"You say you didn't. Then why did you go after Miss Carter again and again?" Hank was so pissed off that he laughed.
Leonard said with a ferocious expression, "I just can't stand it. She thought she could hurt anyone, just because she was Alpha Patrick's mate. She doesn't deserve Alpha Patrick at all."
"That's enough, Leonard! Alpha Patrick asked you to investigate what happened back then, which means that he thought there was more to it. So, just don't draw a conclusion too soon." Hank looked at Leonard sadly. "What happened today will stay between us. But, you are not going to let your feelings meddle with your judgment and do some real digging."
Leonard glanced deeply at Hank and said expressionlessly, "Hank, I'm not that despicable. I will do what Alpha Patrick asked me to do. But I can't put my finger on how much I can find out. After all, it has been three years, and it will be hard to look into the past. The rogues are gone already, and Gloria is the only one who knows something. The only clue might be Gabrielle's classmates. Maybe they know something."
Leonard called Gabrielle's classmates one by one according to the address book.
In a café, four girls were sitting at a coffee table with a man. That man was Leonard.
"Think again. Was there anything in particular? Did Gabrielle say anything?" Leonard asked.
The four girls thought carefully for a moment and then said, "No. We really can't remember."
Their table was next to the window, forming a small semi-enclosed space. They did not know that a man sitting at the next table was eavesdropping on their conversation.
Leonard pursed his lips and said, "You know what? Go back and think about it. If you think of anything, call this number. This is my business card."
Leonard pushed his name cards toward the girls, stood up, and said, "I'll go. I've already settled the bill. Enjoy."
Leonard passed by the next table without paying attention to the one sitting at it.
