The news arrived at dawn, carried by a pack scout who looked as though he had sprinted the entire way. Bella and Kael were in the nursery with Rosalie, basking in the quiet joy of their daughter’s recovery. The scout’s breathless entrance shattered the fragile calm.
“Alpha, Luna,” the scout stammered, bowing deeply. “We’ve received word—Esmera has been found. Dead.”
Bella froze, her arms tightening instinctively around Rosalie. “What?” she whispered, disbelief lacing her voice.
Kael stood, his expression hardening. “Where? How?”
The scout hesitated, glancing at Rosalie before continuing. “Her hideout was discovered by a rogue faction—completely destroyed. The signs point to magical backlash. It’s believed the spell she cast on Rosalie turned on her when it broke.”
Bella’s mind reeled. Esmera, the woman who had haunted their lives, the one responsible for so much pain, was gone? Just like that? It felt surreal, almost anticlimactic. She had envisioned a final confrontation, an opportunity to see the woman defeated with her own eyes. But now? Now, she was left with nothing but an empty sense of incompleteness.
Kael’s voice cut through her thoughts. “What do we know about these rogues? Are they a threat?”
The scout shook his head. “No, Alpha. They’ve dispersed. It seems they were only scavenging the area. They didn’t linger long enough to take anything.”
Kael nodded, his jaw clenched. “Good. Inform the sentries to keep our borders secure. I want regular patrols doubled until we’re sure this is over.”
The scout bowed again and left, leaving an uneasy silence in his wake.
Misery and Lira arrived shortly after, both looking relieved yet cautious. “If it’s true, this is a blessing,” Misery said, her tone calm but firm. “Esmera’s magic was dangerous. If it turned on her, it means the bond she created with Rosalie has truly been severed.”
Bella nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on her daughter. Rosalie was peacefully napping in her crib, her small chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. The sight should have comforted her, but Bella couldn’t shake the gnawing doubt in her heart.
“I should feel relief,” Bella admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I don’t. It doesn’t feel… real.”
“It’s natural to feel that way,” Lira said gently. “Esmera caused so much pain. Closure isn’t always immediate, even when the threat is gone.”
Kael wrapped an arm around Bella’s shoulders, pulling her close. “What matters is that she can’t hurt us anymore. Rosalie is safe, and so are you.”
Bella wanted to believe him. She wanted to accept that their nightmare was over. But something deep inside her refused to rest. “Do we know for sure that her magic is completely gone?” she asked, looking at Misery.
Misery hesitated before answering. “The signs point to it, yes. But magic as dark as hers often leaves traces. It’s why we need to stay vigilant.”
Kael frowned. “If there’s even a chance of lingering danger, we’ll deal with it. I’ll make sure the pack is prepared.”
Bella nodded, though her unease remained. “What about the hideout? Should we investigate it ourselves?”
Misery shook her head. “It’s too risky. If there are remnants of her magic, exposure could be dangerous. Let it collapse into nothing. It’s better that way.”
The day passed slowly, the weight of the news pressing heavily on the pack. Some members celebrated, relieved to hear of Esmera’s demise. Others, like Bella, remained wary, their instincts warning them that the danger wasn’t truly over.
That evening, Bella sat alone by Rosalie’s crib, watching her daughter sleep. The baby’s face was serene, her tiny lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile. Bella reached out, brushing a strand of dark hair from Rosalie’s forehead. “You’re safe now,” she whispered, more to herself than to her daughter. “I promise I’ll never let anything hurt you again.”
Kael entered the room, his steps quiet. He placed a hand on Bella’s shoulder, his presence grounding her. “You’ve been here all day. You need to rest.”
“I can’t,” Bella admitted, her voice trembling. “I keep thinking about Esmera. What if this isn’t really the end? What if there’s something we missed?”
Kael crouched beside her, taking her hands in his. “We’ll face whatever comes, together. But for now, let yourself breathe. She’s gone, Bella. You don’t have to carry that weight anymore.”
