The room was heavy with tension as the swirling magic dissipated, leaving the air cold and still. Adam knelt at the center of the ritual circle, his hands braced on the ground. His breathing was labored, his usual composed demeanor cracking under the strain of the ancient ritual he had just completed. The glowing runes on the floor dimmed until they vanished, leaving only faint traces of chalk.
Bella and Kael stood frozen, their eyes locked on Rosalie’s small, motionless body. For a heartbeat, everything seemed to stop. Bella’s knees gave out as she collapsed beside her daughter, her trembling hands hovering just above Rosalie’s chest.
“Rosalie?” Bella whispered, her voice raw and desperate.
Kael crouched beside her, his jaw tight, his golden eyes brimming with anguish. He reached out, his hand shaking as he placed it over Rosalie’s tiny chest. “Come on, baby girl,” he murmured, his voice cracking. “Fight. You’re stronger than this.”
The silence stretched unbearably, each second feeling like an eternity. Then, a soft, fragile cry broke through the stillness.
Bella gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears streamed down her cheeks. “She’s breathing,” she choked out, her voice filled with equal parts disbelief and relief.
Rosalie’s tiny fists clenched, her face scrunching up as she let out another weak cry. Bella scooped her up, holding her close and burying her face in her daughter’s soft hair. “You’re okay,” she sobbed, rocking Rosalie gently. “You’re okay.”
Kael let out a shaky breath, his shoulders sagging as he wrapped his arms around Bella and their daughter. He pressed a kiss to Bella’s temple, his own tears falling silently. “You did it, Bella,” he whispered. “She’s safe.”
The pack, gathered just outside the room, let out a collective sigh of relief. Misery and Lira exchanged quiet smiles, their tense postures relaxing for the first time in days.
Adam stood slowly, his legs unsteady. He watched the family reunion from the edge of the room, his expression unreadable. His chest rose and fell heavily, but he didn’t allow himself the luxury of relief. His mind was already racing, calculating the cost of what had just transpired.
Eryon, who had been standing near the door, stepped forward. His sharp eyes studied Adam, noticing the way the man’s hands trembled slightly. “You’ve done your part,” Eryon said, his voice low but firm.
Adam turned to face him, his expression hardening. “It’s done,” he said flatly.
Eryon crossed his arms, his gaze unwavering. “Now tell me—what’s the price?”
Adam’s jaw tightened, and he glanced back at Bella and Kael, who were still huddled over Rosalie. He exhaled slowly, his voice dropping to a grim whisper. “Magic like that doesn’t come without consequences.”
Eryon’s brow furrowed. “What kind of consequences?”
Adam didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he moved to the far corner of the room, leaning heavily against the wall. “The spell we broke was ancient, tied to forces that shouldn’t be disturbed. Rosalie might be safe now, but the balance has shifted.”
Eryon’s eyes narrowed. “What are you saying?”
Adam looked directly at him, his gaze piercing. “Esmera isn’t just going to let this go. She’ll feel the disruption, and she’ll come back stronger. And when she does, she won’t just be after the child.
Meanwhile, Bella cradled Rosalie tightly, her tears slowing as the baby’s cries grew steadier. She looked up at Kael, her eyes shining with both exhaustion and hope. “We did it,” she said, her voice trembling. “She’s going to be okay.”
Kael brushed a strand of hair from her face, his touch gentle. “Because of you,” he said. “You never gave up on her.”
Bella shook her head, her gaze shifting to Adam. “Because of him,” she said softly.
Adam didn’t respond, his focus on the conversation with Eryon. Bella’s relief began to give way to unease as she noticed the tension between them. She shifted Rosalie in her arms, turning to Kael. “What’s going on?”
Kael followed her gaze, his brow furrowing. “I don’t know,” he said, his voice low.
Eryon stepped closer to Adam, his voice dropping further. “If Esmera’s power grows, we need to know how to stop her. What aren’t you telling us?”
Adam’s lips pressed into a thin line. “You’ll find out soon enough,” he said cryptically.
