Tish POV
I am standing in the middle of the new pack house entryway, wondering how I got here in the first place. Books of color swatches and furniture are spread all over the floor in front of me. Several contractors are waiting for me to make a decision.
Kai is sitting in the corner, playing a game on his phone. When he said he would keep me company I assumed he would be helping. I was wrong.
One of the contractors clears his throat, and I am pulled out of my thoughts of self-loathing. "Which color for the walls, Luna?" He asks as politely as he is able. I turn to Kai.
"There has to be someone better suited for this job," I whine.
"You are the Luna," Kai reminds me.
I purse my lips together angrily. I have never decorated anything in my life, and now I am expected to design a whole pack house.
"White and black are classic color choices," Raven's voice comes from behind me.
I turn and see her waddling up the pack house stairs. Her feet and ankles are swollen. She has refused to see a doctor yet. I have been doing my best to keep up with her blood pressure and fetal movement, but I only know so much.
I turn back to the contractors. "You heard the Luna Queen. White and black."
"Yes, Luna," the contractor replies. "But there is still the matter of the tile choices."
I smack my hand against my forehead and groan. Raven is snickering behind me and I throw my middle finger up over my shoulder. The contractors gasp at my display of disrespect to the Luna Queen, but Raven is laughing.
"I need to borrow the Luna for a few hours," she smiles at them sweetly.
They mutter niceties under their breath as they leave. Raven looks in Kai's direction and bites down on her lip. Whatever She needs to say, she doesn't want to say it in front of him.
"Hey mate," I shout at him. "Go bother Kaden."
Kai looks at Raven and instantly gets the hint. Tucking his phone into his pocket, he leaves without saying goodbye. It stings a little, but I try not to let the new Kai hurt my feelings.
"How is that coming along?" Raven asks.
It's weird," I admit, but I don't want to talk about it. "Where are we going?"
"To the hospital," she replies.
"Why?" I ask.
"Baby appointment," she says as if it is no big deal.
"Shouldn't your mates be going with you?" I am so confused.
"No," she snaps. Her eyes flash an odd color, and fear rushes down my spine. I can't stop myself from stepping away from her. "Please don't be afraid," she whispers. "I am scared, and I can't tell my mates."
"Why are you scared?" I ask.
"Narah," Raven says Mae's mother's name, and I have to stop myself from rolling my eyes.
"She is crazy," I try to remind Raven, but she shakes her head furiously from side to side.
"She only sounded crazy because we didn't understand her riddles. She is an oracle," Raven is almost in tears.
"What has she seen?" I try to sound sympathetic.
"A dark child will be born, and we must do our best to raise him in the light," Raven says.
For some reason, what Narah has seen makes me feel sick. I become unsteady on my feet, and I need to sit down. When I flop onto the floor, Raven stares at me like I have lost my mind.
"What are you doing?" She snaps at me. "My appointment is in thirty minutes."
"Mae is pregnant," I remind her. "What if it is her child? Not yours."
"I just know," Raven says. "Please come with me."
"Okay," I groan. "But when your mates get angry it is your problem."
"Deal," she says. Then she tosses me her keys and they smack me in the face. "You are driving."
The paper covering the examination table crinkles as Raven wiggles nervously. The doctor is rolling the ultrasound wand over her belly with a sour expression.
"Luna Queen," he begins to chastise her. "Going this far into your pregnancy without care was reckless."
"Luna Tish has been carrying for me," she responds.
The doctor glares in my direction, and I wish I could fade into the background.
"With all due respect," he hisses. "The Luna is not a doctor."
With all due respect," Raven snarls back at him. "I don't give a shit what you think."
Once again, the doctor frowns in my direction, and I get the distinct impression that he does not like me. He sets the wand down and signs annoyingly loud.
"I think the Luna should leave the room while we have a discussion," he says.
I get up to leave. It is a completely reasonable request, but it seems to enrage Raven.
"She is not leaving," she screams, and her eyes begin to glow strangely again.
I quickly stand by her side and take her hand. The doctor is scowling at us both but makes the wise decision to keep his thoughts to himself.
He places the wand back on Raven's stomach and turns the monitor so she can see. The gasp that leaves my mouth fills the silent room when I see the screen. I clamp my hand over my mouth and try not to squeal.
"As you can see, Luna Queen," he says dryly. "You are carrying twins."
Raven does not look excited as she studies the screen. Her eyebrows wrinkle together, and she appears to be fighting back tears.
"What are they?" She demands to know.
"Males," the doctor replies.
She swallows hard and nods her head. I don't understand why we aren't rejoicing. Narah spoke of only one dark child, not two.
"Thank you," she manages to say when the doctor gives her the ultrasound pictures and leaves the room.
"Why aren't you more excited?" I ask.
"Once there was a prophecy about twins," she tells me with tears in her eyes. "One of dark and one of light. That prophecy almost brought the werewolf world to its knees. I won't let that happen again."
