Fired for a potential prisoner
Without wasting any time, she took her phone and dialed the number of the managing director of her bank. The call connected after two rings.
"Hello, Miss Orton," the director greeted.
"Good morning."
"Good morning. How may I assist you?" The man asked, and Anabel leaned forward before replying. "I need immediate action. Five million dollars has been redirected from my company’s payment system to another bank account."
"Five million dollars?" he repeated.
"Yeah," she replied. "I want you to block the account and any other accounts linked to the profile."
"Can I have the person's account information?" The managing director asked.
"Yeah, the account name is Sylvester George. The bank details are…" She recited every detail clearly, ensuring there was no mistake.
There was a brief silence on the other end as the director verified the information. Moments later, his voice returned. "Confirmed. The funds were indeed rerouted to this account. The money has not been tampered with. I will block the account right away."
Anabel listened intently as he worked on his end. Within minutes, he spoke again.
"It’s done. All accounts under this profile are blocked from performing any kind of transactions."
Anabel exhaled, feeling revived. "Thank you very much," she said, then cut the call without another word.
She then turned to Max, who was waiting for her to end the call so he could continue to beg her.
"It looks like you will be relocating." Anabel said, and Max blinked, struggling to process the words. "Relocating?"
Anabel nodded, "Yeah, I'm sure you will enjoy it."
That was when he realized what Anabel meant. She wanted to send him to prison.
"No, Miss Orton. Please—" He begged. "I like my apartment. I don’t need to relocate."
"I wish you had a choice," she said. She reached for the intercom and pressed the button. The security entered within seconds.
"Take him," she ordered without hesitation. "Hand him over to the police."
Max stumbled backward as the guards moved toward him. "Please!" he pleaded. "Please, Miss Anabel, have mercy. It wasn't intentional.
"You had a choice, Max," she said. You had a choice, and you made the wrong one. Take him away!"
The security grabbed him, escorting him out as his protests faded down the hallway. The office fell into silence. Anabel turned to Desmond and thanked him.
"Thank you," she murmured. "If not for you, Max would have erased everything." There wouldn’t have been any trace left."
"I’m just glad you are finally listening to my advice." Desmond said, and Anabel exhaled and nodded.
"And, what about Sylvester?" she asked. "Should I call the cops on him immediately?"
Desmond smirked and replied, "No." And Anabel frowned and asked, "Why not?"
"Visit him this evening," he said. "Don’t tell him you are coming. Just go unannounced."
"Visit him? Why would I do that?" She asked, totally confused. Why would she visit a man that wanted to steal five million dollars from her? How would she visit a betrayal of a friend?
"I want you to go. Maybe you will see something you should have known a long time ago."
"Something I should have known a long time ago? What would that be?" She kept asking herself.
"I will be going now. Always take some rest." He said, smiled at her, and left.
For the first time in a long while, she wished he hugged her before going. A peck on the cheek wouldn't be bad.
As she watched him leave, she felt the dead feelings coming back to life. She smiled and went back to her office to continue from where she left off. When she got into her office, she couldn't concentrate.
She was thinking about Desmond. She was trying to convince herself that the love and care he was showing to her recently weren't real, but the more she thought about it, the more she found herself smiling.
