I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship

When Vanessa Strikes Back

Ch. 67 / 162 Apr 09, 2026

The announcement came over the intercom during the second period: “Mr. Mitchell has been placed on temporary leave pending an investigation. Students with concerns are encouraged to speak with the counselor.”

The room fell silent, the weight of the words settling over us like a heavy fog. Whispers broke out almost immediately, quiet at first, then louder as the realization spread. By lunchtime, the cafeteria was alive with speculation.

“Did you hear? Vanessa was involved.”

“I bet she made the whole thing up.”

“No way. I heard she’s been seeing him for months.”

Every whisper felt like a knife, even though they weren’t directed at me. Vanessa wasn’t at school, but the absence of her usual presence only seemed to fuel the fire.

That afternoon, I sat with Sarah at lunch, picking at my food while the noise around us blurred into a dull roar.

“People are going to talk,” Sarah said, her voice low.

“I know,” I muttered, though my stomach churned with anxiety. “Vanessa seems to not handle it well.”

“She doesn’t,” Sarah agreed. “But you’ve tried to help her. The rest is on her.”

Vanessa’s text came late that night, short and frantic: You’ve ruined everything! Who asked you to stick your nose into my business?!

I texted back immediately: Hey, I was just trying to help!

Well, you made it worse! Now the whole school is talking about me!

You’re stronger than this. You can get through it, I replied, hoping to calm her down.

Don’t act like you care, Carter. Is this your way of getting revenge on me?

No one is taking revenge, Vanessa. Let’s talk at school.

I’m not coming back. I can’t face them. Or you!

I typed out a longer message, reminding her that staying silent had been letting Mr. Mitchell win, and that the hardest part—the truth coming out—was already done. She didn’t reply.

As I stared at my phone, the question I’d been avoiding crept in, uninvited and persistent: Why am I even helping her?
