I couldn’t stop thinking about what Vanessa had told me. Her fear, her desperation—it haunted me. I knew keeping quiet wasn’t an option, but going against Vanessa’s wishes felt like a betrayal. I couldn’t do this alone.
“I need to talk to you,” I said to Sarah as we sat on the bleachers after school. The sky was overcast, matching my mood.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, her voice full of concern.
I hesitated, the weight of the secret pressing on my chest. “It’s about Vanessa and Mr. Mitchell.”
Sarah’s eyes widened. “What about them?”
I told her everything—what I’d seen, what Vanessa had admitted. Her face went from shocked to furious in record time.
“That creep,” she hissed. “He’s been grooming her. This isn’t just some scandal, Emma. This is serious.”
“I know,” I said, my voice cracking. “But Vanessa doesn’t want to report him. She’s terrified.”
Sarah leaned forward, her expression determined. “We can’t let her stay quiet. If we don’t do something, he’ll keep getting away with this.”
I nodded, though the pit in my stomach grew heavier. “We need proof. Something the school can’t ignore.”
The next day, I approached Vanessa in the library. She looked exhausted, her makeup smudged and her usually perfect hair in a messy bun. She barely glanced at me as I sat down across from her.
“What do you want?” she muttered.
“I’m trying to help you,” I said quietly. “But we need to stop him, Vanessa. If we don’t, he’ll just do this to someone else.”
She stiffened, her gaze darting around the room. “You don’t understand. He’ll ruin me.”
“You’re not the one who’s done anything wrong,” I said, my tone gentle but firm. “He’s the one who should be afraid, not you. We can do this together, but I need your help.”
For a moment, she looked like she might agree. But then she pulled her hand away, her expression hardening. “I can’t,” she whispered, standing up and walking out of the library.
I watched her go, frustration and sadness swirling in my chest. I couldn’t give up on her—not yet.
