Vanessa’s text came out of nowhere, a simple invite that seemed almost too good to be true.
Vanessa: Party at my place. No drama, I promise. Let’s put everything behind us.
I stared at the message, my stomach twisting with unease. Sarah was skeptical when I told her. “She’s up to something,” she warned, arms crossed. “You know that, right?”
“I know,” I admitted, my voice quiet. “But if there’s even a chance she means it, maybe it’s worth going.”
Sarah didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t stop me either.
Vanessa’s house was packed when I arrived, music thumping and laughter spilling out into the yard. She greeted me with an exaggerated smile, holding out a drink. “Emma! You made it. Here, have this.”
I hesitated, her friendliness putting me on edge, but I took the drink anyway. She draped an arm around my shoulders, guiding me through the crowd. “See?” she said brightly. “We can all just get along.”
As the night went on, my head began to feel fuzzy. My vision blurred slightly, and I had to lean against a wall to steady myself. The drink. Something wasn’t right.
“Emma, are you okay?” Logan appeared out of nowhere, concern etched across his face. Before I could answer, Vanessa materialized beside him, her expression a twisted mix of sweetness and malice.
“She’s fine,” Vanessa said, her voice too bright. “Just a little overwhelmed, aren’t you, Emma?”
The crowd suddenly seemed to close in around us, and Vanessa raised her voice, drawing everyone’s attention. “You know,” she began, her smirk widening, “Emma here has been keeping secrets.”
“What are you doing?” I slurred, trying to focus.
Vanessa pulled out her phone, her grin turning predatory. “Let’s see what you’ve been up to,” she said, swiping through her screen. “Logan, Caleb—how does it feel to know she’s been playing you both?”
She turned the screen toward the group, showing texts I’d sent Logan. Messages about our secret meetings, about how much I missed him, about the nights we’d shared.
The room seemed to tilt as Caleb stepped forward, his face a mask of fury. “Is this true?” he demanded.
“Caleb, I—” My words faltered, my mind too hazy to string together a defense.
“You’ve been lying to me this whole time?” he shouted. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Logan’s face was harder to read, his eyes flickering with hurt and something deeper. “Emma...” he started, but his voice trailed off.
Vanessa beamed, basking in the chaos she’d created. “Looks like your little game is over.”
