It started as a typical day, the kind where I tried to keep my head down and get through classes without thinking about Caleb, Vanessa, or the mess my life had become. But during English class, something caught my attention.
Mr. Mitchell had always been the “cool” teacher. The one who made sarcastic comments and let students call him by his first name, Rick, like he was some kind of peer. Most of the school loved him, but I’d always found his charm... a little too perfect. Today, though, it wasn’t his jokes or his laugh that set me on edge—it was the way he interacted with Vanessa.
Sarah nudged me when she noticed it too. We were sitting near the back, pretending to take notes as Mr. Mitchell walked over to Vanessa’s desk. She was sitting in the front row, twirling a strand of her hair, her smile just a little too coy.
“You see that?” Sarah whispered, leaning toward me.
I nodded, watching as Mr. Mitchell bent slightly to speak to Vanessa. Whatever he said made her laugh—soft and breathy, the kind of laugh she used when she wanted attention. He smiled back, his hand resting briefly on the edge of her desk before he moved on.
“That’s weird, right?” Sarah muttered. “That’s not just me?”
“It’s weird,” I agreed, my stomach twisting.
Throughout the class, I couldn’t help but notice how often Mr. Mitchell’s gaze flicked back to Vanessa. When she raised her hand to answer a question, he praised her with enthusiasm that felt... excessive. And when the bell rang, instead of letting us all go, he asked Vanessa to stay behind.
“Vanessa,” he said, his tone light. “Can I have a quick word with you?”
Sarah and I exchanged a look as we packed up our bags. Vanessa didn’t seem surprised; in fact, she looked almost smug as she sauntered up to his desk, her books held loosely in one hand.
We lingered outside the door, pretending to check our phones as the hallway cleared. Inside, Mr. Mitchell leaned against his desk, his posture casual, while Vanessa stood close—too close.
“I appreciate the extra effort you’ve been putting in lately,” he said, his voice warm.
Vanessa tilted her head, her smile widening. “Well, I want to make sure I’m... doing everything right.”
“You’re doing great,” he replied, his tone carrying a strange intimacy that made my skin crawl. “You’re one of the most dedicated students I’ve had in a while.”
“Thanks,” she said, her voice dropping slightly. “It’s nice to feel appreciated.”
I glanced at Sarah, who raised her eyebrows. “Tell me that’s not creepy,” she whispered.
“It’s creepy,” I murmured, unable to look away.
Their conversation drifted lower, the words harder to make out. Vanessa laughed again, the sound too flirtatious for a student talking to her teacher. Mr. Mitchell’s hand moved slightly, resting on the edge of the desk near Vanessa’s. It wasn’t overt, but it wasn’t nothing either.
I felt a chill run through me. “Let’s go,” I whispered, grabbing Sarah’s arm.
“What do you think’s going on?” she asked as we walked away.
“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “But it’s not normal.”
That evening, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d seen. Vanessa had always been calculated and manipulative, but this felt different. She wasn’t just playing games with students—she was flirting with a teacher. And worse, he didn’t seem to be stopping her.
