Bound By Blood

Chapter 44

Ch. 44 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

Ella felt it in the bond—a tension that clung to her like a second skin, amplified by the brothers’ unspoken fears and the relentless presence of Mariel.

They were gathered in the study, the fire crackling in defiance of the oppressive atmosphere. Adrian stood near the window, his icy-blue eyes fixed on the mist beyond the glass. His jaw tightened, and Ella could feel the weight of his turmoil, the sharp edge of guilt cutting into her like a blade.

“You wanted answers,” Adrian said at last, his voice low and taut. He didn’t turn to face them, his broad shoulders stiff as if bracing for a blow. “Very well. I will give them to you.”

The tension in the room spiked. Sebastian, leaning casually against a bookshelf, straightened. Vincent remained silent but edged closer to Ella, his presence a steadying force. Mariel lingered in the corner, her blood-red gown pooling around her feet like spilled ink, her expression unreadable but undeniably predatory.

Adrian’s voice dropped, barely above a whisper. “Years ago, I made a choice. A choice that cost a life. The life of Eliah.”

The name hung in the air, and the bond shivered, a tremor of emotions surging between them—recognition, pain, anger. Adrian’s shoulders tensed, his voice dropping as though the weight of the truth might crush him.

Ella felt the bond surge violently, her breath hitching as his emotions—guilt, anguish, self-loathing—crashed into her. Adrian finally turned, his gaze locking onto hers, and the raw vulnerability in his eyes made her chest tighten.

“He was my closest friend, my confidant,” Adrian continued, his voice breaking slightly. “We grew up together, survived together.” He paused, the words catching in his throat. “Years ago, the witch hunters came for us,” he said, finally turning to face his brothers. His eyes were clouded with guilt. “They had tracked us for months, moving closer, cutting off every escape route. The manor was vulnerable, and so were we. I made a decision… to protect the family.”

“What decision?” Sebastian’s voice was sharp, cutting through the heavy silence like a blade.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “I gave them Eliah’s name.”

The words struck like a physical blow. Sebastian took a step forward, his usual charm replaced with unrestrained fury.

“You what?” he hissed, his golden eyes blazing. “Eliah was not just a friend of yours—he was also ours! He was part of this family!”

Adrian’s voice rose, matching Sebastian’s intensity. “Do you think I wanted to? They were coming for all of us, Sebastian! They wanted blood, and if they had taken any of you—”

“Don’t you dare justify this!” Sebastian snarled, his fists clenched. “You handed him over! You betrayed him!”

Adrian’s gaze snapped to Sebastian, his eyes glinting with suppressed fury. “It was the only way to keep the family safe. Eliah would have—”

“Eliah would have what? Sacrificed himself for you? For us?” Sebastian’s voice rose, his usual charm giving way to unrestrained rage. “You do not get to play the martyr, Adrian. You made a choice. A selfish one.”

Ella’s heart clenched as the bond flared, the brothers’ emotions crashing into her like waves. She could feel Raphael’s sorrow, deep and quiet, almost suffocating in its weight.

“Eliah trusted us.” He finally spoke, his voice soft but heavy. “He trusted you the most, brother.”

Adrian’s icy-blue eyes met Raphael’s, his voice breaking. “I thought he could escape. He was always the clever one, the strongest. But they caught him. And then they…” He swallowed hard. “They burned him.”

Sebastian turned away, his hands gripping the edge of the bookshelf so tightly that his knuckles turned white. “And you kept this from us?” His voice trembled with rage. “All these years?”

“I carried it because I had to,” Adrian snapped, his voice filled with anguish. “I carried it because if you had known, it would have destroyed us all.”

Sebastian let out a bitter, humorless laugh. He spun around, golden eyes blazing. “And you call yourself our leader? You sacrificed Eliah—our brother in everything but blood! You betrayed us, and you dare to claim it was for our good?”

Adrian’s gaze darkened, his icy-blue eyes narrowing dangerously. “I made a choice—one no one else could make—to save you, to save all of us. Do not pretend you would have done differently.”

The bond surged violently, transmitting Adrian’s fury and Sebastian’s searing contempt straight into Ella’s heart. She staggered under the weight of their emotions, her breath catching as their volatile energy clawed at her.

“Stop, please!” she cried, stepping between them, her hands raised in desperation. “This is not helping!”

Adrian’s sharp gaze softened slightly as it landed on her, but his stance remained rigid, his voice as cold as ice. “Ella, you do not understand. Everything I have done has been to protect this family.”

“At what cost?” Sebastian countered, his voice rising, raw and furious. “How many more lies have you told us, Adrian? How many more betrayals are buried in that noble heart of yours?”

The tension between them snapped like a whip. Adrian’s fists clenched, his magic flaring at his fingertips, the crackling energy a visible manifestation of his barely-contained anger. Sebastian, refusing to back down, stepped closer, his golden eyes daring Adrian to strike first.

“You think you are untouchable,” Sebastian hissed. “That your decisions are above reproach. But you are just a coward hiding behind the weight of your so-called leadership.”

Adrian’s hand shot out, grabbing Sebastian by the collar and slamming him back against the bookshelf. The crack of wood echoed in the room, and books toppled to the floor.

“Careful, Sebastian,” Adrian growled, his voice low and menacing. “You have no idea what I have sacrificed for you.”

Sebastian’s lips curled into a dangerous smile, even as his golden eyes burned with fury. “Try me, brother.”

Before Adrian could react, Sebastian shoved him back, his strength surprising in its ferocity. The two brothers collided again, raw anger igniting like a wildfire as they grappled, their movements driven by years of unspoken resentment. Magic crackled in the air, a tangible force that made Ella’s skin prickle.

“Enough!” Ella screamed, stepping forward. She placed herself between them, her arms outstretched, her voice trembling but firm. “Stop this now!”

Adrian froze, his icy-blue eyes locking onto hers, his chest heaving with the effort to rein in his emotions. Sebastian, his hands still clenched into fists, glared at Adrian over her shoulder, but the bond pulsed with a flicker of guilt that mirrored the conflict in his expression.

“Is this what Eliah would have wanted?” Ella asked, her voice breaking. “For you to tear each other apart over his memory?”

Adrian’s gaze faltered, the anger in his eyes dimming as guilt took its place. He stepped back, his shoulders heavy with the weight of her words. Sebastian, though still tense, exhaled sharply and turned away, his golden eyes dark with unresolved fury.

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by Mariel’s soft, mocking laughter. She stepped forward, her crimson gown trailing behind her like blood on the floor.

“Oh, how beautifully fragile you all are,” she purred. “It is almost poetic, really. Betrayal, anger, guilt—such rich, delicious chaos.”

Adrian turned on her, his magic sparking violently at his fingertips. “Stay out of this, Mariel.”

Mariel raised her hands in mock surrender, her crimson lips curling into a sly smile. “Of course, dear Adrian. This is your mess to clean up. But don’t forget—secrets have a way of consuming even the strongest bonds. And your precious family is already hanging by a thread.”

Her form dissolved into tendrils of shadow, vanishing into the corners of the room. Her laughter, rich and mocking, lingered like a haunting melody that twisted through the air.

The manor groaned as though alive, responding to the tension that hung thick between them. The floor trembled, the once-sturdy wooden boards creaking ominously. Books cascaded from shelves, and the flickering flames in the hearth stretched unnaturally, casting jagged, distorted shadows across the walls.

Ella gasped as the bond flared violently, surging with the unresolved emotions of Adrian and Sebastian—anger, betrayal, and a guilt so sharp it clawed at her chest. The threads of the connection felt taut, as if they might snap under the strain.

“Adrian, Sebastian, please,” she pleaded, stepping between them. Her voice trembled, but there was a desperate strength in her words. “This is what Mariel wants—to divide us, to make us weaker. Do not let her win.”

Sebastian’s golden eyes flicked to her, the rage simmering there tempered briefly by her words. “She is right,” he muttered, though his jaw remained tight. “But this is not over, Adrian.”

Adrian nodded stiffly, his shoulders tense as he glared at Sebastian. “It never is.”

The ground beneath their feet shuddered, and Ella stumbled as the manor shifted once more. Walls groaned as they elongated, new corridors twisting into existence while others collapsed into shadow. The air grew colder, and Mariel’s voice echoed faintly, a taunting whisper that sent a chill down Ella’s spine.

“Oh, this is only the beginning, my darlings,” her disembodied voice cooed. “The bond may hold you together, but it will break you just the same.”
