Bound By Blood

Chapter 42

Ch. 42 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

Mariel’s presence seeped through Blackthorn Manor like a dark fog, shifting the atmosphere to something both intoxicating and dangerous. Shadows stretched farther, the air grew colder, and even the faintest creak of the floorboards seemed to carry her name.

Sebastian found her in the library. Or perhaps, she had chosen to be found.

The dim light of a nearby lantern cast flickering shadows over the room, and there she stood, her blood-red gown clinging to her like a second skin. She ran her fingers lazily along the spines of the ancient books, her touch leaving an unsettling warmth in its wake.

“You carry it in your blood, you know,” Mariel said, her voice low, silken, and just loud enough to cut through the silence. “A mystery even you do not understand.”

Sebastian paused a few steps from her, his golden eyes narrowing as suspicion mingled with intrigue.

“What are you getting at, witch?” His tone was sharp, but there was a thread of curiosity he couldn’t quite hide.

Mariel turned slowly, her movements deliberate, as though she controlled not only herself but the very air in the room. Her gaze locked onto his, sharp and unyielding, her crimson lips curving into a smile that was neither kind nor safe.

“Your lineage,” she said, her voice soft and teasing, each word a lure. “It is more… complicated than you think. A puzzle piece misplaced in a grander picture.”

Sebastian raised an eyebrow, forcing his voice to remain calm despite the tightening in his chest. “And you think you know the truth?”

“I do not ‘think’. I know it.” Her smile widened.

She stepped closer, the hem of her gown brushing against his boots as she tilted her head, studying him like one might a rare artifact.

“Wouldn’t you like to know, too? To finally understand who you really are?” Her hand lifted, her fingers brushing lightly against his chest. The touch was fleeting, a whisper against the fabric of his shirt, but it left behind a heat that spread through him.

Sebastian’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t pull away. Instead, the bond flared between him and Ella. She felt a jolt of something unexpected—a mix of curiosity, fear, intrigue and something dangerously close to temptation. Through the connection, Adrian’s emotions surged as well, his simmering anger bleeding into the bond like a wildfire spreading unchecked.

Ella could sense Adrian’s fury, his possessiveness crashing into her with each passing moment as he stood in the hallway, unseen, watching Mariel toy with his brother as he watched her fingers trail over Sebastian’s chest.

Mariel’s voice dropped to a whisper as she leaned closer, her breath brushing against his ear.

“You could be part of that, Sebastian. But you must trust me.”

Sebastian’s lips twitched into a smirk, though the bond betrayed his unease.

“Trust a witch who plays with shadows? I think I will pass.”

Mariel pulled back, laughing softly, her fingers retreating but leaving a phantom sensation behind.

“You do not have to decide now,” she said, her gaze drifting toward the doorway where Adrian remained hidden. “But time is not on your side.”

The tension in the library was thick enough to choke on, the bond pulsing with emotions that was hard to sort.

Mariel turned back to Sebastian, her tone softening.

“When you are ready to stop pretending you are fine with the pieces they have given you, come to me. I can help you find the truth.”

With a swirl of her crimson gown, she was gone, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than her presence. Sebastian exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair as if to shake off her lingering influence.

He turned, his eyes narrowing as Adrian stepped out of the shadows, his fury unmistakable.

“What was that?” Adrian demanded, his voice low and laced with accusation.

Sebastian met his gaze evenly, though tension rippled through the bond.

“A witch playing her games. Nothing more.”

In the training room, shadows danced on the walls, cast by the flickering glow of the torches. The space was silent but for the faint hum of energy between them and the soft sound of Ella’s breathing, which matched Vincent’s as though drawn from the same rhythm. He stood behind her, his presence steady and close, the heat of him brushing against her with every shift.

“Focus,” Vincent said, his voice low, each word deliberate, like the touch of silk across her skin. “Feel it building within you, let it guide you.”

Ella swallowed, nodding as she tried to concentrate. His hands moved, lightly tracing her wrists, guiding her through the intricate gestures needed to summon the ward.

The warmth of his fingers lingered, igniting a quiet storm beneath her skin. She couldn’t help but be acutely aware of him—every breath, every subtle motion—her senses amplifying his presence as the bond between them thrummed with unspoken intensity.

A faint shimmer began to glow between her palms, the energy responding to her focus.

Or was it responding to him? She couldn’t tell anymore.

Each motion brought them closer, her back brushing his chest, their movements synchronized, as though their connection was a force unto itself.

“Better,” Vincent murmured, his voice softer now, almost reverent.

His hands shifted, lingering on hers for a fraction longer than necessary, his breath warm against the curve of her neck. The bond surged, threading his emotions into her own—admiration, protectiveness, and a restrained yearning that left her pulse erratic.

The ward finally solidified, casting a faint glow that illuminated his face as he stepped closer. His dark eyes caught hers, an intensity there that made the room feel smaller, the air between them electric. He didn’t pull away immediately. Instead, he stood there, close enough that she could feel the rise and fall of his breath.

“Eleanor,” he said softly, her name slipping from his lips like a confession. His gaze held hers, his usual stoicism breaking just enough to reveal something raw and unguarded.

She turned slightly, their faces now mere inches apart, her heart thundering in her chest. Words hovered between them, unspoken yet deafening. The bond crackled, alive with the weight of everything they didn’t say. For a moment, the world outside faded entirely, leaving only him, only this.

Then, as if breaking a spell, Vincent drew back. His hand brushed hers one last time before slipping away, his expression hardening once more.

“Again,” he said, his voice steady but laced with something unresolved.

Ella nodded, the bond still humming between them, a quiet echo of the moment that lingered like an unfulfilled promise.

Later that evening, the dining room was steeped in an air of strained civility, the long mahogany table adorned with flickering candles and platters of untouched food.

Ella sat between Vincent and Sebastian, their presence a silent but steadying force as the bond hummed faintly in the background. Adrian sat at the head of the table, his icy-blue gaze scanning the room like a sentinel, while Raphael and Lucien exchanged quiet words at the far end.

The clatter of silverware against porcelain echoed faintly, a stark contrast to the unspoken tension that lingered between them all. It was as though the air itself carried the gravity of everything left unsaid.

The heavy wooden doors to the dining room creaked open, and an icy draft swept through the room. All heads turned as Mariel stepped inside, her presence immediately dominating the space.

“Well,” she said, her voice a silky drawl that sent shivers down Ella’s spine. “What a charming little tableau. May I join you?”

Adrian was on his feet in an instant, his hand gripping the back of his chair.

“You were not invited,” he said, his tone clipped and icy.

Mariel’s smile widened, an expression that was more predatory than warm.

“Ah, but I do not need an invitation,” she replied smoothly, gliding toward the table. “This manor is as much mine as it is yours, Adrian. Perhaps even more so.”

She stopped at Ella’s side, her gaze lingering on her with unsettling intensity.

“And here she is,” Mariel murmured, her voice dropping to a purr. “The centerpiece of it all.”

Ella stiffened as Mariel’s fingers lightly trailed along her shoulder, cold and deliberate. The bond flared sharply and she felt Adrian’s possessiveness surge like a tidal wave, his chair scraping loudly against the floor as he rounded the table to stand between them.

“Do not. Touch. Her,” Adrian growled, his voice low and dangerous.

Mariel laughed softly, a sound that seemed to echo unnaturally in the room.

“Such a fire,” she mused, stepping back but keeping her gaze locked on Ella. “You’ve all made quite the impression on her, haven’t you? But does she truly understand what this bond means?”

“What are you getting at?” Vincent asked, his voice steady but laced with suspicion.

Mariel’s eyes flicked to him, her expression sharpening. “I’m getting at the truth,” she said. “The bond you share is powerful, yes, but it is also volatile. Fragile. And unless you want it to tear you apart, you will need my help.”

“We don’t need your help,” Adrian snapped.

Mariel’s gaze turned icy, and with a graceful wave of her hand, the candles dimmed, plunging the room into an eerie half-light. “Oh, but you do,” she said, her voice edged with steel. “Let me show you what you truly are.”

Her voice commanding as she began to chant in a language older than the manor itself. The runes on the walls flared to life, casting flickering shadows across the room.

Ella’s breath caught as the bond suddenly surged, the threads between her and the brothers tightening like a noose. Their emotions crashed into her all at once—Adrian’s fierce protectiveness, Vincent’s quiet resolve, Sebastian’s raw vulnerability, Raphael’s sorrow, and Lucien’s unyielding determination. The intensity left her gasping, her hands gripping the edge of the table for support.

Mariel leaned in closer, her silver eyes gleaming. “Feel that, Ella? That is the power you hold. But it is also the power that will destroy you if you are not careful.”

“Stop it,” Adrian growled, his voice sharp and commanding as he stepped forward. “Whatever you are doing, stop it now.”

Mariel’s laugh echoed through the hall, dark and mocking.

“Oh, Adrian,” she said, her tone dripping with condescension. “You’re so quick to fight what you don’t understand. But this… this is the truth of your bond. Raw. Unfiltered. Unbreakable.”

Ella staggered, her knees buckling under the weight of the emotions coursing through her. Vincent was at her side in an instant, his arm steadying her as he glared at Mariel.

“That is enough,” he said, his voice low and dangerous.

Mariel smirked, stepping back with a flourish of her crimson gown. “Very well,” she said. “But consider this a gift, Ella. A glimpse into the power you hold. And the price it demands.”

As the magic receded, Ella was left trembling, her heart racing as the bond settled into a quiet hum. The brothers surrounded her, their emotions still raw and exposed, but their presence grounding her in the chaos.

“You will come to me soon enough.” Mariel’s eyes gleamed with triumph as she disappeared into the shadows, her voice lingering like a haunting melody. “You always do.”
