Bound By Blood

Chapter 27

Ch. 27 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

Lucien, ever the observer, broke the silence again. “Vincent,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “We need you to confront this—whatever it is you are holding onto.”

Vincent didn’t move. His dark eyes stayed fixed on the floor, his jaw tightening as he wrestled with whatever thoughts plagued him. The bond flickered, a jarring mix of emotions that made Ella’s head spin.

Finally, Vincent looked up, his gaze locking onto Ella’s. The intensity in his eyes made her breath hitch, and she felt a faint pulse of warmth through the bond—a flicker of something fragile and raw.

“You want a confession?” Vincent’s voice cut through the silence, raw and unguarded. His dark eyes flicked to Ella, then to the glowing veins of the circle, as though searching for something he couldn’t name. “Fine.”

He stepped into the circle, the ethereal light casting jagged shadows across his rugged features. His posture was rigid, his shoulders taut like a bowstring, bracing himself for the storm he was about to unleash.

“I have always been the one who defied the rules,” he began, his tone sharp and bitter. “The rebel. The one who pushed back against Adrian’s authority, who mocked Lucien’s logic, who refused to follow anyone’s lead but my own. It was easier that way—easier than facing the truth about myself.”

The bond hummed faintly, a tremor of emotion rippling through Ella. She stayed silent, her chest tightening as she felt the vulnerability in Vincent’s voice, his pain bleeding into her like ink on water.

“I have failed,” he said, his voice cracking on the words. “Not just once. Not just in small, forgivable ways. I have failed in ways that mattered. In ways that cannot be undone.”

He turned to face Ella fully then, his gaze heavy with guilt and pain. “Years ago, there was someone I cared for. Someone who trusted me, who believed in me. And I swore I would protect her. I thought my defiance made me stronger, that my recklessness was what set me apart. But I was wrong.”

The bond surged violently, and Ella gasped as a wave of sorrow and regret slammed into her. It wasn’t her pain—it was his, raw and overwhelming, crashing over her like a tide. She clutched her chest, struggling to breathe as the depth of his grief seeped into her.

“I was not there when she needed me,” Vincent continued, his voice trembling. “I was too consumed by my own pride, too busy trying to prove a point to anyone who would listen. And when the moment came—when her life was in my hands—I hesitated. That hesitation cost her everything.”

Ella’s heart clenched at the anguish in his voice. She took a step closer, her hands trembling as she reached for him.

“Vincent…” she whispered, her voice soft but insistent.

He shook his head, a bitter laugh escaping his lips, harsh and self-loathing. “You do not understand,” he said, his jaw tightening as his gaze burned into hers. “It was not just her life I failed to save. It was her trust. Her faith in me. I destroyed it. And I have been carrying that failure ever since.”

The bond flared again, stronger this time, a torrent of emotion that left Ella reeling. Tears welled in her eyes as she felt the weight of his guilt, the self-inflicted scars he had borne alone for so long.

She stepped closer, her voice trembling but steady. “Vincent, you—”

“You think I do not feel this bond?” he interrupted, his voice sharp with frustration. “You think I do not know what it is doing to you? I see it every time you flinch, every time you look at me like I am supposed to have all the answers. But I don’t. I am not a savior, Eleanor. I am just a man who already failed my beloved one.”

The words hung between them, heavy and unyielding. The air crackled with tension, the bond humming faintly with unspoken truths. Ella stepped closer still, her hand reaching out to rest gently on his arm.

“You are not a failure,” she said, her voice firm and unflinching. “Yes, you have made mistakes. And yes, they have hurt you deeply. But they do not define you, Vincent. They never have.”

His breath hitched, his dark eyes searching hers as though looking for a lifeline.

“You do not know what I am capable of,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, the shadows in his expression still lingering.

“I know more than you think,” she replied, her gaze unwavering. “I feel it, remember? Every doubt, every push, every moment you try to keep me at arm’s length—I feel it all. But I also feel the man who caught me when I fell. The man who stood by me when the world was crumbling. The man who would fight tooth and nail to protect the people he loves.”

The bond thrummed softly between them, its warmth tentative but steady, like an ember refusing to be extinguished. Vincent’s features softened, the harsh lines of guilt giving way to something fragile, something almost hopeful.

“But still afraid,” he admitted, his voice barely audible. “Afraid to fail you, too.”

Ella stepped even closer, her fingers brushing his cheek with a tenderness that brought a faint tremor to his frame.

“I am not asking you to be perfect,” she said. “I am just asking you to be here. With me.”

The bond pulsed again, not with pain or regret but with a quiet strength, binding them together in a way that felt unbreakable. For the first time, Vincent didn’t pull away. He let the moment settle, his gaze locked on hers, the weight of his confession lifting ever so slightly as hope flickered to life in the depths of his heart.

The bond flared brighter, the emotions between them melding into something stronger, more stable. For a moment, the room seemed to respond—the glowing veins in the walls pulsing in time with their shared heartbeat.

But the peace was short-lived. A sharp crack echoed through the chamber, and Ella turned to see Sebastian pacing near the edge of the room, his golden hair catching the flickering light. His expression was a mix of agitation and something darker, something Ella couldn’t quite place.

“This is all very touching,” Sebastian said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “But has anyone noticed that the manor is reacting to every little burst of emotion we throw at it?”

Adrian frowned, his icy-blue gaze narrowing. “What are you getting at?”

“I am saying this bond is not just about us anymore,” Sebastian snapped, his usual charm replaced by frustration. “The manor’s magic is tied to it, and it is growing more unstable by the second.”

As if to prove his point, the ground beneath them trembled faintly, the light from the walls flickering like a dying flame. Ella’s chest tightened as a sharp pain lanced through her wrists, the black veins pulsing ominously.

“We are running out of time,” Lucien said, his voice grim. “If we do not stabilize the bond soon, the manor will collapse—and it will take all of us with it.”

The weight of his words settled over them like a shroud, the tension in the room thick enough to cut. Vincent stepped out of the circle, his hand brushing Ella’s briefly as he passed her. The contact sent a faint ripple through the bond, a reminder of the progress they had made.

But as Ella turned to face Sebastian, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the storm was far from over. His agitation crackled in the air around him, his emotions bleeding through the bond in jagged, unpredictable bursts.
