Bound By Blood

Chapter 18

Ch. 18 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

Sebastian lounged in the torn armchair, one leg draped casually over the other, the picture of nonchalance despite the heavy tension hanging in the room. The brothers had convened in the study, its dim lighting and lingering scent of smoke lending the scene a sinister weight. The air buzzed with unresolved energy, their earlier skirmish with the Morvath clan leaving everyone bruised, both physically and emotionally.

Ella hovered near the door, her nerves frayed but her resolve holding firm. The argument over the ritual had spiraled into a deadlock, with no solution in sight and the Morvath clan preparing for another strike.

It was Sebastian who first broke the silence, his voice deceptively light. “We are looking at this all wrong,” he drawled, his dark eyes gleaming with an idea.

Vincent shot him a glare. “And what exactly are we looking at, oh wise one?”

“Fear.” Sebastian grinned, completely unfazed. “That is what they are bringing—fear of our weakness, of this house collapsing on itself. But fear can be a fickle thing, can’t it? What if we flipped it?”

“Speak plainly, Sebastian.” Adrian turned from the window, his expression unreadable but his sharp gaze pinning Sebastian in place. “We do not have time for riddles.”

Sebastian straightened, his grin sharpening. “Let’s give them a reason to think we are not weak. In fact, let’s make them believe we have become stronger than ever.”

“How would we do that?” Ella frowned, confused.

Sebastian stood, his movements fluid as he strolled to the center of the room, gesturing grandly.

“Simple. We will throw another masquerade ball. A grand affair, more opulent than the last. We will act like the ritual has already succeeded, that the house is overflowing with power and that we are just oh-so-graciously inviting everyone to celebrate our victory.”

Vincent stopped pacing, his scowl deepening. “You cannot be serious.”

“Oh, I am deadly serious,” Sebastian said, his tone gaining an edge. “The Morvath clan is circling because they think we are vulnerable. Let’s make them doubt. Let’s make them second-guess every move they are planning. If they believe the house is stronger than ever, they will hesitate. They will waste time trying to figure out what we have done.”

Lucien’s smirk widened slightly as he tilted his head, his dark eyes glinting with amusement. “It is not the worst idea, actually,” he admitted. “Deception can be a powerful tool when used correctly.”

Adrian’s expression hardened. “Deception only works until it doesn’t. And if they realize we are bluffing—”

“They will already be in our house,” Sebastian interrupted, his tone turning sharper. “Where we will have the advantage. Isn’t that what you have always said, Adrian? Control the battleground.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing, the flicker of contemplation in his eyes betraying his thoughts.

Raphael’s voice broke the silence, soft but resolute. “It is a risk, but it might be worth it. If nothing else, it buys us time to decide on the ritual—or find another solution.”

Sebastian turned to Ella, his grin softening slightly.

“And, of course, the star of the show will be you, darling. Nothing catches their attention like the woman they all think is at the center of the prophecy. Let them see you radiant, untouchable, a queen in the heart of her domain.”

Ella stiffened, her stomach churning at the thought.

“You want to parade me in front of them? Like bait?”

“Not bait,” Sebastian corrected, his tone unusually serious. “A distraction. You are not weak, darling, and it is the time they see that. No one can play this part better than you.”

She hesitated, her heart pounding as she looked at the brothers. Finally, Ella exhaled, nodding slowly.

“Fine,” she said, her voice steadier than she felt. “But if this goes wrong…”

Sebastian’s grin returned, dazzling and infuriating. “It won’t. Trust me.”

Adrian turned back to the window, his voice low but commanding. “Then we move forward. Prepare the invitations and the hall. If we’re doing this, we do it right.”

* * *

The grand hall of Blackthorn Manor was a masterpiece of dark opulence, transformed under Sebastian’s direction into a scene of decadent splendor. Crystal chandeliers hung high above, their light diffused by crimson drapes that lined the stone arches. Every flicker of the chandeliers’ candles cast mesmerizing shadows across the polished marble floor, where the elite of the vampire world mingled in a cacophony of silk, whispers, and intrigue. The air was thick with tension, the underlying purpose of the event masked by the elegance of the occasion.

Ella stood near the edge of the room, feeling both exposed and entrancing in the crimson gown Sebastian had chosen for her. The fabric shimmered in the candlelight, rich silk that seemed to flow like liquid fire with her every movement. The gown’s design was daring, the bodice fitted tightly to her figure, accentuating the curve of her waist and the delicate slope of her shoulders. Intricate black lace adorned the neckline, trailing up her collarbone like delicate vines and leaving the barest hint of skin exposed—a blend of elegance and provocation.

The black lace mask, intricately woven and adorned with tiny onyx crystals, concealed the upper half of her face. Its delicate design framed her eyes, drawing attention to the nervous spark within them. Though the mask was meant to disguise, it only served to enhance the raw vulnerability she carried beneath her composure.

“I still think that this is a bad idea,” she murmured, her voice low as Sebastian appeared at her side. His silver mask gleamed in the candlelight and his rakish grin was as confident as ever.

“Bad ideas are the most fun,” he replied, handing her a glass of wine with a dramatic flourish. “Besides, it is brilliant. The Morvath clan won’t dare launch an attack in the middle of a public spectacle. This buys us time, gathers allies and lets us probe their ranks for weaknesses—all under the guise of a charming soirée.”

Ella took the glass but didn’t drink, her gaze darting across the room. Dozens of masked figures filled the space, their identities concealed by intricate disguises, their motives even harder to discern.

The music swelled as guests twirled across the floor, their laughter mingling with the clink of crystal goblets. But beneath the glamour, Ella could feel the tension simmering. Adrian stood near the grand staircase, his icy blue eyes scanning the crowd with unrelenting focus. His dark mask did little to hide his imposing presence, and though his posture was calm, his fingers rested near the hilt of his sword.

Vincent prowled the perimeter of the room like a restless wolf, his black and gold mask giving him an almost regal air. But his dark eyes burned with suspicion, constantly flicking back to Ella as if ensuring she was still safe.

Ella’s unease grew as the evening progressed. The crowd’s energy was strange, a mix of forced elegance and barely restrained hostility. She could feel eyes on her, even when she couldn’t pinpoint their source.

Sebastian, ever the consummate host, moved through the crowd like a predator cloaked in charm. He laughed, flirted and bantered with their guests, but his sharp gaze missed nothing. When he returned back to Ella’s side, he carried with him a glint of amusement and a sharper edge of purpose.

“Smile, darling,” he murmured, slipping an arm around her waist. “You are the brightest star of the evening.”

Ella tensed under his touch, her discomfort mingling with the heat of his presence. “I did not ask to be,” she replied, her voice taut.

“And yet here you are,” he said, his grin widening. “Just try to enjoy yourself.”

Before Ella could respond, a tall man approached with a wolfish smile that sent an involuntary chill down her spine. His mask was simple yet elegant, his sharp eyes gleaming with curiosity and something darker as they fixed on her.

“May I ask a lady for this dance?” he asked smoothly, his tone cultured but carrying an undercurrent of command that made her hesitate.

Ella glanced at Sebastian, who stood by her side, holding his glass of wine with an air of practiced amusement. He leaned in slightly, his grin playful.

“Go on,” he murmured lightly. “Play your part.”

Reluctantly, Ella placed her hand in the stranger’s, letting him guide her to the dance floor. The music swelled around them, and they moved in time with the waltz, though the man’s grip on her waist was firm—bordering on possessive.

“You seem out of place here,” he said conversationally, though his words carried a pointed edge.

“I am not much for places like this,” Ella replied carefully, her voice measured as her eyes darted across the room.

As they turned, her gaze caught on Vincent. He stood near the edge of the dance floor, his tall frame tense and rigid. Even behind his black and gold mask, the storm in his dark eyes was unmistakable. His jaw was set tight, his lips pressed into a thin line as he watched them with an intensity that made her pulse quicken.

Her dance partner followed her gaze, a sly smile curling at the corners of his mouth.

“Ah, so I am not the only one watching you,” he remarked, his tone low and knowing.

Ella’s chest tightened, a mix of embarrassment and unease flooding her. She tore her gaze away from Vincent, focusing on the man in front of her.

“I do not know what you mean,” she said, her voice sharper than intended.

“Of course not,” he replied smoothly, though his grip on her waist tightened slightly. “Still, it is fascinating to see who notices when the star of the evening is stolen away.”

Ella’s eyes flicked back toward Vincent involuntarily and she saw the flicker of something raw in his expression—anger, yes, but also something deeper, something almost vulnerable. It was as though the sight of her in another man’s arms was a challenge he could not ignore.

She didn’t have to wait long to see his reaction.

As the dance turned them once more, Vincent moved. He crossed the floor with decisive strides, the powerful set of his shoulders and the clenched fists at his sides making it clear that he wasn’t going to ask politely.

“This dance is over,” Vincent growled, his voice low and dangerous as he stepped between them.

The stranger arched an eyebrow, his expression cool but wary as he released Ella and took a step back.

“I did not realize she was spoken for,” he said lightly, though his tone carried an edge.

Vincent didn’t answer, his dark eyes locked on the man with such intensity that even the bravado faltered. The stranger inclined his head, his lips curling into a faint smirk before he disappeared into the crowd.

Ella turned to Vincent, her heart still racing.

“What are you doing?” she asked, her voice a mix of frustration and confusion.

“You should not be out here alone,” he replied curtly, his tone both scolding and protective.

“I was not exactly alone,” she shot back, her frustration bubbling over. “And I did not have much of a choice in the matter.”

“There is always a choice,” Vincent muttered, his voice softer now but still edged with frustration. He held her gaze for a moment longer, his expression unreadable, before turning on his heel and striding away, leaving Ella standing on the edge of the dance floor.

Her emotions churned as she watched him disappear into the crowd. Vincent’s jealousy had been unmistakable, and while it left her feeling protected, it also left her with a whirlwind of questions she wasn’t ready to confront.

As the night deepened and the grand hall filled with swirling laughter and the soft strains of music, Ella found herself retreating to a quieter corner. Her role as the centerpiece of the evening, the alluring focus of the masquerade’s intrigue, was taking its toll. Her thoughts spun with the tension of every interaction, every carefully measured response. She pressed her back against the cool stone wall, taking a moment to catch her breath.

It was no surprise when Sebastian materialized at her side, as if he’d sensed her need for reprieve. His presence was as unshakable as ever, his silver mask catching the faint candlelight, though his expression beneath it was entirely his own—mischievous and knowing.

“You are quite the performer tonight, darling,” he said smoothly, his tone carrying a teasing edge. “I think you might even be enjoying it.”

Ella shot him a sharp look, though the faintest smile tugged at her lips. “Enjoying it? Hardly.”

“Do not sell yourself short.” Sebastian chuckled, leaning in closer. “The way you handled that wolfish dancer? Flawless. Even Vincent couldn’t hide his jealousy.”

He tilted his head, his dark eyes gleaming. “You have a way of turning heads, you know. Makes it all the more fun to watch you work.”

“Glad to know my discomfort is entertaining for you.” Ella crossed her arms, her voice laced with sarcasm.

“Not just entertaining,” he countered, his grin widening. “Enchanting. Bewitching, even. You’ve played your part so well that I’m starting to believe you’ve been hiding this femme fatale side of yourself all along.”

“Sebastian,” she warned, though her cheeks flushed under his praise.

“What?” He stepped closer, his voice dropping lower. “Can’t a man admire a woman who can command a room with just a glance?”

She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop the faint laugh that escaped her lips. “You are incorrigible.”

“And you are beautiful,” he said without hesitation, his gaze locking with hers. “Come with me.”

Before she could protest, he took her hand, his fingers warm and steady against hers. He led her through the crowded hall with practiced ease, weaving between guests until they slipped into a shadowy alcove at the edge of the room.

The noise of the masquerade faded into a muted hum, the intimacy of the space wrapping around them like a cocoon. Sebastian leaned casually against the wall, though his intense gaze betrayed the ease in his posture.

“Believe me, you are doing remarkably well tonight,” he said, his tone light but his eyes holding her captive. “Better than I’d expected.”

“It doesn’t feel like it.” Ella exhaled, her voice soft. “Every word feels like a misstep, every move like I am walking a tightrope.”

He smiled, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair from her face. His touch lingered, sending a shiver down her spine.

“That is the trick, darling. Let them think you are in control, and they will never realize how close they are to falling off their own tightropes.”

His proximity was overwhelming, his eyes searching hers as his hand moved to cup her cheek. The warmth of Sevastian’s palm was steadying and she found herself leaning into it despite the storm of emotions brewing in her chest.

“Eleanor,” he murmured, his voice softening into something uncharacteristically serious. “You have no idea how dangerous this world is, do you?”

“I am starting to figure it out,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“From now on always never forget about the power you have,” he continued, his thumb brushing lightly against her cheek. “You are holding much more power in yourself than any of us could have ever expected. But this also does not mean you won’t break.”

The vulnerability in his voice, the weight of those words, struck a chord deep within her. Before she could respond, Sebastian closed the distance between them, his lips brushing against hers in a kiss that was soft at first—almost hesitant.

Ella froze for a heartbeat, her breath catching, but then her body moved of its own accord. Her hands gripped on his shoulders, and as the kiss deepened, it became a slow, consuming fire. There was no teasing in this moment, no games—just the raw heat of his touch and the way he drew her closer, his hands slipping to her waist as if to anchor her to him.

“You make it very hard to behave, darling.” He broke the kiss just enough to murmur this against her lips, his voice low and filled with an edge of mischief.

Ella’s pulse quickened, a blush creeping up her neck as she whispered, “You have never behaved a day in your life.”

Sebastian chuckled, his forehead resting against hers.

“Fair point.” His fingers traced the curve of her waist and his dark gaze locked with hers, challenging and enticing all at once. “The question is—do you want me to start now?”

Her lips parted, her answer caught in her throat as the intensity of his words and presence pressed against her resolve. For once, she didn’t know if she wanted him to stop.

Sebastian’s fingers slid down her waist, the heat of his touch igniting something in Ella that she couldn’t suppress. His dark eyes burned with an intensity that left her breathless, a wicked smirk playing at his lips as though he knew exactly what he was doing to her.

“Careful,” she whispered, her voice trembling yet daring.

“Careful?” he echoed, his voice a low murmur as he leaned closer, his breath brushing against her ear. “Darling, when have I ever been like that?”

At that moment, his lips found her neck, pressing slow, deliberate kisses along her skin, sending shivers coursing down her spine. Ella’s hands tightened on his shoulders, her body felt like again betraying her as it arched toward him. She knew this was dangerous—playing with fire when her life was already teetering on a knife’s edge—but Sebastian had a way of making her forget about everything else in the moment.

“You should stop,” she managed, her voice barely audible as his kisses trailed lower, just above the neckline of her gown.

“Should I?” he murmured against her skin, his hands gripping her waist more firmly as he pulled her closer. “Because I don’t think you want me to.”

Sebastian’s boldness was intoxicating, and the way he moved—confident, deliberate, utterly in control—stoked the embers of her own desire. She reached up, her fingers tangling in his hair as she pulled him into a deeper kiss. It was demanding and unrestrained, a clash of need and defiance that neither of them wanted to end.

Kisses grew bolder, his lips trailing down the curve of her neck with a deliberate slowness that left Ella trembling. Each touch ignited a fire within her, one she couldn’t contain no matter how much she told herself to stop. His hands roamed over her waist, his fingers pressing into the fabric of her gown as though memorizing every line of her body.

Ella’s breath hitched when his hand slid lower, lingering just above the curve of her hip. She could feel the strength in his grip, firm but teasing, as if he were holding back just enough to keep her on edge. He shifted closer, and her awareness of him sharpened—the heat of his body pressed against hers, the unmistakable tension in his movements, and the heady realization that she could feel his arousal against her thigh.

The thought sent a thrill racing through her, making her knees weak. She bit her lip, torn between the warning bells in her mind and the undeniable pull of him.

“Sebastian…” she whispered, though her voice lacked the conviction to stop him.

“Yes, darling?” he murmured, his lips brushing the sensitive skin just below her ear. His voice was a low, seductive drawl that made the heat from her lower abdomen spread throughout her entire body.

Her words caught in her throat as his hand slid further, his fingers skimming along the fabric of her dress, so close to where her body ached for his touch. The teasing pressure was enough to make her gasp softly, her nails digging into his shoulders as she clung to him.

“It might be dangerous, Lord Sebastian,” she managed, her voice trembling with equal parts warning and need.

Sebastian chuckled, a low, rich sound that vibrated against her skin. “Danger suits you, Lady Eleanor,” he whispered, his lips trailing back to hers, claiming her in a kiss that was deeper, more possessive than before.

The world around them blurred, the flickering candlelight and distant hum of the ball fading into irrelevance. There was only the heat of his body, the teasing press of his hand and the way his arousal stirred something reckless inside her.

Her head tilted back against the wall, her breath coming in short, ragged bursts as his lips found the delicate hollow at the base of her throat. His touch ventured higher again, his fingers skimming the sensitive edge of her bodice, daring her to stop him—but she didn’t. She couldn’t.

Every inch of her burned with want, her resolve crumbling beneath the weight of his seduction. She hated how easily he unraveled her, but in that moment, she wanted nothing more than for him to keep going.

But the spell shattered as a loud voice echoed from the ballroom, cutting through the intimacy like a blade.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” came the smooth, chilling tone, laced with authority.

Sebastian froze, his lips still inches from hers, his body tense as his dark gaze darted toward the source of the interruption.

“Gregory Morvath,” Sebastian muttered, his tone dripping with disdain as he stepped back, his protective instincts flaring.

Ella’s heart pounded as she adjusted her gown, her pulse still racing from Sebastian’s touch but now mixed with the sharp edge of fear.

“Stay close,” Sebastian said, his voice low but commanding as he took her hand. Together, they stepped out of the alcove to face the predator who had just interrupted their stolen moment.

At the top of the staircase, Gregory Morvath stood, his imposing figure cutting through the elegance of the ball like a blade. His voice rang out, cold and commanding.

“I believe it is time we stopped pretending,” he began, his smile a chilling contrast to the menace in his tone. His gaze found Ella instantly, his intent unmistakable. “I have come here today to take what is mine.”
