Bound By Blood

Chapter 24

Ch. 24 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The oppressive silence of the caverns seemed to consume all sound, the faint drip of water echoing like a drumbeat in Ella’s ears. She tightened her grip on the lantern Lucien had handed her, its flickering light barely penetrating the dense shadows around them. The air was damp, heavy with the scent of earth and something older—ancient, almost metallic.

Adrian led the way, his broad shoulders tense as his eyes scanned every inch of their surroundings. Vincent walked beside Ella, his hand hovering near her back as though prepared to catch her at any moment. Behind them, Sebastian trailed with a faint smirk, though even his usual playful demeanor seemed subdued in the oppressive atmosphere.

Ella’s wrists ached faintly, the black veins pulsing beneath her skin as the bond hummed with the others’ emotions.

“We will take the northern passage,” Adrian said, his voice low but firm. “Lucien’s map indicates the obsidian chamber lies deep within that section.”

“You saying it like it is easy to navigate,” Sebastian quipped, his golden hair catching the lantern’s light. “These caverns shift, remember? They have been reacting to us since we entered.”

Adrian shot him a glare but didn’t respond, his focus returning to the uneven path ahead. The ground beneath them was slick, and Ella’s boots slipped more than once as they descended deeper into the labyrinthine tunnels.

Vincent noticed her faltering steps and placed a steadying hand on her arm.

“Careful, Eleanor,” he murmured, his voice soft but edged with concern. “These rocks are treacherous.”

She nodded, grateful for his support. “Thank you.”

The bond between them flared briefly at the contact, a warm pulse that sent a shiver up her spine. She quickly looked away, hoping he hadn’t noticed the flush creeping up her cheeks.

They reached a narrow ledge that overlooked a yawning chasm, the drop disappearing into inky darkness. Adrian paused, his lantern illuminating the jagged rocks below.

“We will need to cross,” he said, gesturing to a series of uneven stone platforms jutting out over the void. “One at a time. Ella, stay close.”

She swallowed hard, her heart pounding as she peered into the abyss. The faint flicker of her lantern barely revealed the far edge, and her stomach churned at the thought of misstepping.

“I will go first,” Vincent said, stepping past Adrian. “And guide her.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened, but he nodded, his gaze lingering on Ella as Vincent began to make his way over the ledge. The stones shifted slightly under his weight, but he moved with a confident precision, his dark eyes scanning for the safest path.

When he reached the first platform, he turned and held out a hand to Ella.

“Come on,” he said gently. “I’ve got you.”

Ella hesitated, the weight of the bond pressing against her chest. Every instinct screamed at her to stay put, but she knew there was no turning back. Steeling herself, she placed her hand in Vincent’s, his grip warm and steady as he guided her onto the platform.

“Do not look down,” Vincent advised, his voice calm but taut with tension. The air in the cavern felt heavy, the darkness pressing in on them like a living thing. The narrow path beneath their feet was precarious, and the void below seemed endless.

Ella nodded, her breaths shallow as she focused on his face. His dark eyes were steady, offering an anchor amidst her fear. The bond between them flickered faintly, threading his reassurance and protectiveness into her mind like a lifeline. For a moment, it eased the trembling in her legs.

But as they stepped onto the second platform, the fragile ground beneath her foot crumbled without warning.

“Eleanor!” Vincent’s voice rang out, sharp and panicked, cutting through the cavern as she slipped. Her cry echoed into the void as she flailed, her hands scrabbling for anything to hold onto.

Her fingers found nothing but air as the abyss yawned below her, the rush of adrenaline freezing her thoughts. Then, just as suddenly, an arm wrapped tightly around her waist, jerking her back with a force that knocked the breath from her lungs. Vincent had lunged, catching her just in time.

They landed hard against the platform, his body shielding hers as the impact reverberated through them. For a moment, neither of them moved, their chests heaving with the effort to breathe. The bond surged violently, an overwhelming torrent of shared emotions crashing over her like a wave.

Ella gasped as the connection flared brighter than ever, stripping away every barrier between them. She felt everything—Vincent’s raw relief, his fear, his guilt at not having acted sooner. It was unfiltered and intense, weaving with her own lingering terror until she could no longer distinguish where his emotions ended and hers began.

“Are you hurt?” Vincent asked, his voice thick and trembling with emotion. His arm remained around her waist, his hand pressing against her side as though to confirm she was still there.

She shook her head, her pulse racing as she looked up at him. His dark eyes were locked onto hers, filled with an intensity that made her breath catch. The cavern around them faded, the bond pulling them into a private world of shared sensation. Every beat of his heart, every unspoken thought, seemed to echo through her as if they were one.

“No,” she whispered, her voice unsteady but honest. “I’m fine… thanks to you.”

Vincent’s hand lingered on her waist, his touch burning through the fabric of her clothes. “I won’t let anything happen to you,” he said softly, his voice barely audible but resolute. “Not ever.”

His words sent a shiver down her spine, their weight sinking into her like a promise she didn’t know she’d been waiting for. The bond thrummed between them, their emotions tangling in a way that felt both electric and intimate, leaving her breathless.

Ella’s hands clutched at his arms, her fingers trembling as she tried to ground herself amidst the overwhelming sensations. “Vincent…” she began, her voice faltering as the warmth of his body and the intensity of his gaze drew her in.

His lips parted, and for a moment, she thought he might say something else, something that would change everything. But before either of them could move, a faint, ominous rumble echoed through the cavern, vibrating through the unstable platform beneath them.

“Move!” Adrian’s voice cut through the moment, sharp and commanding. “The platform is unstable!”

The spell broke. Vincent’s jaw tightened as he pulled Ella to her feet in one fluid motion, his hand never leaving her waist as he steadied her. The urgency in the air snapped them back to reality, and he guided her quickly toward the next ledge.

Sebastian was already there, his usual smirk absent as he reached out to steady her. His golden hair caught the faint light, and for once, his expression was devoid of teasing. Instead, his eyes flicked over her with genuine concern.

“You really know how to keep things interesting, darling,” he said, though his tone was unusually subdued.

Ella managed a weak smile, her legs still trembling as Vincent’s arm slipped from her waist. The bond settled back into a quiet hum, but the echoes of the emotions they had shared still lingered, like a shadow imprinted on her soul.

“Thank you,” she whispered to Vincent, her voice barely audible as her fingers brushed his arm. He glanced at her, his gaze unreadable, but the flicker of something unspoken passed between them before he turned back to survey the path ahead.

The cavern rumbled again, a reminder of the danger that still surrounded them. But Ella’s thoughts remained on Vincent, on the raw intensity of their bond, and the way his touch had felt like both a lifeline and a spark threatening to ignite something far more powerful than she could control.

The deeper they ventured, the more the caverns seemed to shift. The walls pulsed faintly, glowing runes etched into the stone flickering like dying embers. Ella couldn’t shake the feeling that the magic within the tunnels was alive, watching them with a silent, malevolent presence.

“We are close,” Adrian said, his voice cutting through the oppressive silence. “The obsidian chamber should be just ahead.”

As they rounded a bend, the tunnel opened into a vast chamber. The air here was colder, tinged with a metallic tang that made Ella’s skin prickle. In the center of the room stood a jagged formation of black crystal, its surface shimmering faintly in the lantern light.

“Nightshade Obsidian,” Lucien had called it. But standing before it now, Ella could feel the raw power radiating from the stone. It pulsed in time with the bond, each beat sending a faint vibration through her body.

Adrian stepped forward cautiously, his eyes narrowing as he examined the crystal.

“This is it,” he said, his voice heavy with relief. “We have found it.”

But as Ella moved closer, the bond surged again, the ancient magic within the obsidian reacting to their presence. The runes on the walls flared to life, casting eerie shadows that danced like living things. The chamber trembled, and a low, resonant hum filled the air.

“Careful,” Vincent warned, his hand brushing Ella’s shoulder as he pulled her back slightly. “Something is happening.”

“We need to extract the obsidian carefully.” Adrian’s jaw tightened, his hand brushing the hilt of the dagger at his side. “Any disturbance could—”

His words were cut off as a sudden burst of energy rippled through the room, the magic reacting violently to their unstable bond. Ella cried out, clutching her chest as the veins on her wrists darkened, pain lancing through her like a blade.

“Eleanor!” Vincent and Adrian called in unison, their voices echoing in the chaos.

Sebastian cursed under his breath, his golden hair glowing in the pulsating light as he stepped closer to her. “We need to stabilize her before this place tears itself apart!”

The bond flared wildly, each brother’s emotions colliding in a chaotic storm that threatened to consume them all. Ella’s knees buckled, and Vincent caught her once again, his arms wrapping around her protectively as the chamber shook.

“Hold on,” Adrian said, his voice steely despite the chaos. “We’re getting out of here—together.”

The magic surged once more, and the obsidian glowed brighter, its power reaching for them like a living thing. They were running out of time.
