Bound By Blood

Chapter 21

Ch. 21 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

Ella drifted in and out of sleep, her body restless, her mind caught in a fog that wasn’t entirely her own. The sensations started as whispers at the edge of her consciousness—a pull, faint but insistent, threading its way through her chest.

Then came the weight, coiling tight like an iron band around her ribs, a dull ache that radiated outward. Her breath quickened, shallow and uneven, as her heart began to pound. At first, she thought it was a dream, some lingering fragment of the ritual haunting her subconscious. But the feeling grew sharper, more vivid, until it consumed her completely.

Ella pushed herself up onto her elbows, her body trembling from the effort. That’s when she felt it—a sudden, overwhelming rush of emotions that weren’t her own.

Hunger. Fear. Anger. Desire.

They crashed into her like a tidal wave, leaving her gasping. Her eyes widened as she looked from one brother to the next.

A sudden surge of longing struck her, potent and overwhelming, making her gasp as though she’d been submerged in icy water. It wasn’t hers—she knew that instinctively.

The sensation coursed through her veins like liquid fire, wrapping her in a suffocating embrace that was both alien and intimate. She sat up abruptly, her body drenched in cold sweat, her gray eyes wide with confusion.

Last night. The ritual. The memory hit her like a slap.

The chanting, the blood, the firelight illuminating the brothers as they stood in a circle around her. Adrian had been at the center, his hands stained with crimson as he recited ancient words she couldn’t comprehend. Whatever they had done, it had forged a connection between them. She had felt it in fleeting moments before succumbing to unconsciousness, but now... now it was unbearable.

She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, pressing her bare feet against the cool wooden floor in an effort to ground herself. For a brief moment, the chill provided relief, cutting through the haze of emotions that weren’t her own.

But just as she began to steady her breathing, another wave hit. This one was sharper, laced with fury so intense it felt like a physical blow. It flared hot and fast before vanishing, leaving her gasping and clutching her chest as her heart raced erratically.

“What is happening to me?” she whispered, her voice trembling, the words barely audible in the stillness of her room.

Deep down, she already knew the answer. The bond.

The ritual had done more than forge a connection between her and the de Vallière brothers—it had opened a door, embedding them into the very fabric of her being.

Their emotions coursed through her like echoes in an endless chamber, each one rippling through her until she couldn’t distinguish where they ended and she began. The overwhelming sensations weren’t hers to control; they were the raw, unfiltered feelings of the brothers, flooding her mind in chaotic bursts.

She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to suppress the rising tide within her. It wasn’t just the intensity of the emotions; it was their sheer unpredictability.

One moment she felt Adrian’s commanding presence, steady and unyielding, the next she was swept away by Vincent’s simmering frustration or Sebastian’s capricious energy. Each wave crashed into her, relentless and consuming, threatening to drown her entirely.

A soft knock at the door pulled Ella from her restless thoughts. She paused, staring at the door as if it might give her an excuse to stay hidden.

“Yes?” she called hesitantly.

The door creaked open, and a servant entered, bowing slightly. “Miss Ella, the masters await you in the dining hall for breakfast.”

Ella nodded slowly, her hands tightening into fists at her sides. “I’ll be there shortly.”

The servant lingered, her gaze flicking over Ella’s face with a mixture of curiosity and caution. “They… mentioned not to delay,” she added before scurrying out.

With a sigh, Ella moved to the wardrobe. The bond tugged at her relentlessly, a low, simmering pull that made her chest ache. No matter how hard she tried to push it aside, it was there, a constant reminder of the connection forged during the ritual. She dressed quickly, brushing her hands over the simple fabric of her gown as if it could shield her from the emotions that awaited.

The dining hall was bathed in soft morning light, but the atmosphere was anything but serene. The usual hum of conversation was absent, replaced by a charged silence. Ella stepped inside, her heart hammering.

Adrian sat at the head of the long table, his posture impossibly composed. His dark hair framed his sharp features, and his icy-blue eyes locked onto her the moment she entered. His brothers were already seated—Vincent to his left, his expression dark and brooding; Sebastian further down, his golden hair catching the light as he twirled a fork between his fingers; and Raphael at the far end, his gaze downcast, barely touching his food.

“Ella,” Adrian said, his voice smooth and commanding. “Join us.”

She hesitated, the weight of their gazes pinning her in place. Finally, she moved to the empty chair beside Vincent, her movements stiff as she sat down. The clink of her chair echoed too loudly in the vast space.

“Sleep well?” Sebastian asked, his tone laced with a teasing edge. His golden eyes flicked to her, studying her reaction.

“Enough,” she replied, her voice quiet. The bond’s simmering warmth flared again, making her chest tighten.

Adrian leaned forward, resting his hands on the table. “You’ve felt it, haven’t you?”

Ella froze, her fingers hovering over a piece of bread. She didn’t need to ask what he meant. The connection between them pulsed like a living thing, unrelenting and invasive.

“Yes,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Vincent scoffed, breaking the tension with a sharp laugh. “We’ve all felt it,” he said bitterly. “That’s the problem.”

Sebastian smirked, leaning back in his chair. “Not enjoying the newfound closeness, brother?” His tone was light, but his gaze flickered with something darker.

“It’s unnatural,” Vincent snapped, his voice low but sharp. He turned to Adrian. “This bond—this thing—is driving us insane. You feel it too, don’t you?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened, his icy-blue eyes narrowing. “I’m managing it.”

“You’re pretending you’re above it,” Vincent shot back. “But you’re not.”

Ella glanced between them, her pulse quickening. The tension in the room was suffocating, the weight of their emotions pressing against her like a vice. She opened her mouth to speak, but Raphael’s quiet voice cut through the noise.

“We need to figure this out,” he said, his tone gentle but firm. “Fighting about it won’t help.”

Vincent’s dark eyes flicked to Raphael. “And what do you suggest? Meditation? Holding hands and singing songs?”

“I suggest,” Raphael said calmly, “that we stop acting like this is her fault.” His gaze turned to Ella, softening.

“But it’s here,” Adrian interjected, his tone firm. “And ignoring it won’t make it go away.”

Sebastian chuckled, his voice low and smooth. “So, what’s the plan, Adrian? Are we supposed to ‘manage’ our feelings while they bleed into hers?” He turned to Ella, his smirk widening. “Tell me, darling, how does it feel to carry all of our emotions and hunger?”

Her cheeks flushed, the heat of the bond flaring in her chest. “It’s… very overwhelming,” she admitted.

Vincent let out a frustrated growl, pushing his plate away. “This is madness. I can’t keep feeling everything—every moment of anger, every damn emotion bleeding into my head.”

“And yet,” Adrian said sharply, “you’ll have to.”

The room fell into tense silence again, the brothers each grappling with the weight of their shared connection. Ella felt it all—Adrian’s cold determination, Vincent’s simmering rage, Raphael’s quiet guilt, and Sebastian’s playful yet dangerous curiosity. The bond pulled at her, a tangled web she couldn’t escape.

Finally, she stood, her chair scraping loudly against the floor.

“I can’t do this,” she said, her voice trembling. “I need space.”

Adrian’s gaze locked onto hers, piercing and unrelenting. “Running won’t change what’s between us.”

“I’m not running,” she said firmly. “I’m just trying to breathe.”

Without another word, she turned and walked out of the dining hall, her steps quick and uneven. The bond followed her, an invisible tether that tightened with every step she took. As she reached the corridor, she pressed a hand to her chest, the weight of their emotions nearly suffocating her.

The silence behind her was deafening, but she knew they were still connected—still feeling everything she was, just as she felt them. And she had no idea how to escape it.

The library was Ella’s sanctuary, a cocoon of aged parchment and leather-bound secrets that shielded her from the storm raging within her. She let her fingers glide along the spines of the books, the cool touch of the embossed titles grounding her. But the solace was fleeting. The memory of Adrian’s touch lingered, searing into her skin like an echo she couldn’t shake.

She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she didn’t notice him until he spoke.

“You can’t avoid me forever.”

Ella whirled around, her heart leaping into her throat. Adrian stood in the doorway, his frame blocking out the light from the corridor. His expression was unreadable, but the tension in his shoulders betrayed him.

“I’m not avoiding you,” she said, though the words felt hollow even to her. “I told you that before, Your Grace, I just needed some air.”

“You’re lying.” he said simply, his voice devoid of accusation but heavy with certainty. Adrian stepped inside, his movements slow and deliberate, like a predator closing in on its prey. “I can feel it.”

The door clicked shut behind him, and the sound reverberated in the quiet library, raising goosebumps on her skin.

Ella took an instinctive step back, her shoulder blades brushing against the bookshelf. The air seemed heavier now, charged with a tension she couldn’t ignore. The bond between them flared, igniting a heat in her chest that spread like wildfire.

“Adrian, please do not…” she managed, her voice barely above a whisper.

But he was already closing the distance.

“Do not what?” he asked, his tone a mixture of curiosity and challenge. “Acknowledge what’s between us? Pretend it doesn’t exist?”

“This… this is not you,” she said, her voice trembling as her back pressed fully against the shelf. “It is just the bond playing tricks on us.”

His lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile.

“If it is not real, then why are you trembling?”

He reached out, his fingers brushing against her cheek. The simple touch sent a jolt through her, the connection between them roaring to life. Her breath caught, and she hated how her body betrayed her, leaning into his touch as if seeking more.

“Adrian…” she began, but her voice faltered.

“Don’t fight it, Ella,” he murmured, his fingers tracing the curve of her jaw before sliding to the back of her neck. His thumb brushed against her skin, leaving a trail of heat in its wake. “You feel it too. This pull… this fire.”

Her chest rose and fell with quickened breaths as he leaned in, his lips mere inches from hers. The bond crackled like lightning between them, an invisible thread pulling them closer, tangling their emotions into an inseparable knot.

“Adrian, we can’t—”

“Can’t?” he interrupted, his voice a whisper against her lips. “Or won’t? Do not forget—you are mine.”

Before she could respond, his lips crashed onto hers, claiming her with a ravenous hunger that left her breathless. The kiss wasn’t gentle; it was a storm, raw and consuming. Adrian’s tongue invaded her mouth with a mastery that made her knees weak, his hands tangled in her hair, pulling her closer as her own fingers gripped his shirt, desperate for something to hold onto as the world spun wildly around them.

The bond between them surged, amplifying every sensation until she could no longer tell where she ended and he began. It was as if every nerve in her body had become connected to his, and every touch, every taste was a shockwave that reverberated through them both.

It wasn’t just a desire—it was an insatiable hunger, a need that consumed every thought and left only room for longing. She felt his craving as if it were her own, the depth of his lust flooding her senses until it became impossible to resist submitting to it.

For a moment, she gave in. Her body responded to his every touch, her lips moving against his in a rhythm that was both instinctual and inevitable. She could taste the hunger on his breath, feel the heat of his body pressed against hers, a reminder that she was alive, a reminder that she was human.

But then the bond shifted.

A sharp, searing pain shot through her chest, shattering the fragile illusion. Ella cried out, breaking the kiss as she clutched at her heart. The connection, once intoxicating, now felt like a knife twisting inside her.

The air seemed to hum, vibrating with unrestrained magic as Ella struggled to keep herself together. Adrian cupped her cheeks, his movements deliberate, calm, as though trying not to spook a wild animal.

“Ella, look at me,” he said softly, his voice no longer sharp or commanding but coaxing, gentle, laced with panic. “What’s wrong?”

She sank to her knees, her vision swimming as waves of emotion crashed over her.

Despair, anger, jealousy—they came in relentless bursts, each one more overpowering than the last. She clung to the edge of the bookshelf, her breaths shallow and labored.

“I… I can’t…” she choked out, her voice barely audible.

Adrian dropped to her side, his hands gripping her shoulders as he tried to steady her.

“Breathe, Ella. Stay with me,” he urged, his voice trembling.

But it was too much. The bond was a storm inside her, tearing her apart from the inside out. The last thing she saw before darkness claimed her was Adrian’s face, his eyes wide with fear and helplessness.

Then everything went black.
