Twiddling with the bracelet Lena gave to him, Darian was lost in thoughts of his wife until the squelching sound of Jay's shoes against the floor interrupted his musings.
He looked up at him, his face quickly switching to a scowl. He wondered why he had to come into the living room now. He stopped touching the bracelet, focusing his attention on Jay.
"Is there something that I need to know?" He questioned, squinting his eyes.
"Here are the reports you demanded," Jay handed a file to Darian, bowing his head to his boss.
Darian snatched the file from Jay, flicking through the pages with swift moves. He halted and shook his head, nothing there was appealing to him, not the things he wanted to see.
"Anything else?" He asked, disgruntled.
"Yes boss, someone is missing in the casino," Jay said to him.
"Missing? How?" Darian fluttered his eyes, taking a maximal interest in the latest development.
"Her name is Nessa, she works as a cleaner at the casino. We recently discovered that she was missing, no one had thought of her until few days ago.
"Nessa?" Darian bobbed his head, the name sounding familiar and uncanny at the same time. "How is she related to this?"
"She was right in the casino on the game day, but she disappeared before the event started." Jay elaborated, showing a picture of Nessa to Darian.
She was tall, almost the same height as Lena. Her eyes were hazel, and her hair was curly crimson red. The hair, and the eyes were the only things that differentiated her from Lena.
Now he remembered where he had seen her, it was the day he visited Talia and she was cleaning the desk. Talia had called her name, telling her to excuse them.
"Could she have poisoned Gaius and how come you only know about this since two weeks now?" Darian asked him.
"I don't have evidence of her poisoning Gaius, but she's a suspect here because she ran away the same day it happened. We are on the lookout for her. Some of our men visited the house she used to stay at, but she wasn't found, she had eluded." Jay motioned to the couch, seeking approval for him to sit down. Darian urged him, he sat and continued. "After you ended the call with Gaius that day and ordered me to go to his place because you wanted to drop your wife somewhere."
Darian was getting tired of Jay's long talks, could he just jump to a conclusion?
"I met with Talia on my way to meet Gaius. She told me about Nessa and she also pointed out the fact that she already told Judson about it some days back."
"Talia told Judson?" Darian chuckled, "and he didn't mention it. He wanted Lena to remain in that room. That bastard." He cussed through gritted teeth. "Bastard! And you, why didn't you report this to me when you got back from Gaius' house?" He queried him.
"You didn't want to talk to anyone. You stayed out late that night and since then I have been working on finding Nessa's whereabouts." Jay clasped his hands together, "we've dug deeply into her profile, our men are out there searching for her. I am sure she'd be apprehended."
Darian nodded his head excitedly, that was the best news so far. He heaved an exasperated sigh,
"Jay, thank you very much for your hard work, I appreciate all you do." He commended him.
"I must serve you and remain loyal to you and that's what I will do till I die," Jay got off the couch, took two steps forward, and bowed his head to Darian. "You saved my life, you deserve all my loyalty, boss."
Darian smiled. Jay's words softened his heart. They'd been coming for a very long time, and Jay had never failed him.
"I will leave now if there is nothing else to talk about, I have to get back to work," Jay said.
Darian hummed a response.
For a second, he thought of asking Jay about his mother, but he quickly shook the thoughts off his mind.
Jay bowed again and left the living room afterward.
Darian relaxed his back on the couch after Jay left. He was alone in his mansion. Lena had gone to Lisa's house and Tina had resumed her college classes.
After much thinking, he decided to let Lena leave the house for a while. She'd been living with Lisa for three days now and Darian's mansion was void without her.
He missed her whiff in the bedroom they shared, he missed her smiles, her beautiful face when she was asleep, how she lazily walked the room whenever she was tired, and her light giggles around the house.
He missed everything about her, from the biggest to the little things she did to him. His house was in total darkness without her, he just realized she was the glow that lit up his house and his life.
The beeping on his phone brought him out of his reverie. Lisa was texting him to bring Lena's phone along with him if he was coming over to her house later that night.
He made a mental note of that, getting to his feet, he strolled into the bedroom and something crossed his mind, something he hadn't had the time to do all this while. A very important thing he so badly wanted to do before Lena was locked up.
"The diary!” He snapped his fingers. He hadn't checked it since she gave the key to him a few weeks back. He hurried into the bedroom, trying to remember where she kept the diary. Her words flashed through his mind and he immediately remembered, "somewhere in her closet. " He muttered, roaming the room until he was in front of her closet.
Everywhere smelled like her now. Darian folded one of her dresses in his hand, he sniffed it and inhaled sharply. There was no doubt he yearned for her. Smiling, he placed the dress back on the hanger.
"Lena," he groaned.
He carefully searched every compartment of her closet, but he didn't find anything. Darian placed his hands on his waist, wondering if Lena had played a fast one on him.
He chuckled, giving up on the search. He was about to leave when he saw the necklace he gave to her lying poorly in the closet, she'd probably abandoned it because she was mad at him.
He reached for the necklace and beside it was the diary he had been searching for. It was there in the third compartment of the wardrobe.
He grabbed the diary, dropping the necklace back to where she left it.
"Finally!" He muttered. "Now I wonder what she wrote in here," he got the box she gave to him before and took a good position at the edge of the bed.
Pulling out the key from the small box, he unlocked the diary and his heart skipped a beat. He didn't know why he was nervous to read the diary.
Darian flicked open the first page of the diary and smiled, fixating his eyes on the words she inscribed on the note.
"Dear Darian." He started.
