I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship

Lines Crossed

Ch. 37 / 162 Apr 09, 2026

Caleb had a way of making the world fade away, and that night was no different. We’d driven out past the edge of town, where the stars burned brighter and the noise of everyday life felt like a distant memory. His car was parked at the edge of a deserted field, the radio playing softly in the background as we sat in comfortable silence.

“Do you ever think about leaving?” Caleb asked suddenly, his gaze fixed on the horizon. “Just... getting out of here and starting over?”

“Sometimes,” I admitted, hugging my knees to my chest. “But it’s not that simple.”

“Nothing worth it ever is,” he said, turning to look at me. There was something in his expression—intense and unguarded—that made my breath catch.

Before I could respond, he leaned in, his hand sliding around the back of my neck as his lips found mine. The kiss was deep and insistent, sending a rush of heat through me. My hands moved instinctively to his shoulders, clinging to him as the moment spiraled into something more.

Caleb’s confidence was intoxicating, his touch firm and knowing as his hands roamed over my body. When he tugged me into his lap, my heart hammered in my chest, torn between exhilaration and a flicker of hesitation.

“Caleb,” I murmured, breaking the kiss as his hands slid under my shirt.

“Relax, Emma,” he whispered, his lips brushing against my neck. “I’ve got you.”

For a second, I let myself get lost in the moment—the heat of his touch, the urgency of his kiss—but when his hands moved lower, reality came crashing back. I pulled away, breathless and trembling.

“Wait. I can’t... I’m not ready.”

He cupped my face in his hands. “It’s okay. We don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”

As I leaned back against the seat, trying to catch my breath, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was in way over my head.

Logan’s POV

Rumors swirled through the halls like wildfire, a relentless storm that refused to die down. Whispers crawled under my skin, twisting into something ugly and restless. It didn’t help that I could see the way people looked at me—like they were waiting for a reaction.

And they were about to get one.

I spotted Emma near her locker, and before I could think better of it, I was moving, closing the distance between us. The tension in the air was thick, the words already burning on my tongue.

"You’re dating Caleb Torres?" My voice came out sharper than I intended, cutting through the noise like a blade.

Emma stiffened, arms crossing over her chest—defensive, guarded. "Why do you care?"

That defiance, the way she met my gaze without flinching, sent a fresh wave of frustration through me. I took a step closer, my jaw tightening. "Because he's trouble, Emma. He’ll hurt you."

She let out a bitter laugh, sharp and cold. "And you didn’t?"

The words landed like a punch to the gut, knocking the air right out of me. For a second, I had nothing. No defense. No excuse. Just the weight of my own mistakes pressing down on me.

"This isn’t about me," I said, voice low but heated. "It’s about you being with someone who doesn’t deserve you."

Her arms tightened around herself, a flicker of something—pain, hesitation—breaking through before she shut it down. "Why don’t you focus on your own mess with Vanessa and leave me alone?"

The mention of Vanessa was like a slap to the face. My fists clenched at my sides, jaw locked.

"I…" The words felt foreign, stuck in my throat. Then, softer, rawer, "I care about you, Em. I always have."

She froze. For the briefest moment, something shifted between us—something that felt like a memory, like all the things we never said. But then, just as fast, she shut me out.

"You have a funny way of showing it," she muttered, voice colder than I’d ever heard it.

And then she was gone, slipping past me without another glance, disappearing into the crowd.

Leaving me standing there, fists clenched, heart pounding, and drowning in everything I never said when I had the chance.
