I stared at Alyssa, skepticism warring with curiosity. “Why are you telling me this?” After everything, trust didn’t come easily.
“Because...” she hesitated, her eyes flicking back toward Vanessa’s table where the queen bee held court, oblivious to our conversation. “Because she’s not as invincible as she thinks. People are starting to see through her, Emma. And if you want to take her down... You won’t be alone.”
She quickly stepped back to Vanessa’s table before the queen could start asking questions. I studied Alyssa, trying to gauge her sincerity. It would’ve been easy to dismiss her, to write her off as another one of Vanessa’s pawns playing some elaborate game. But there was something in her eyes—a flicker of guilt, perhaps, or defiance—that made me pause.
Maybe Vanessa wasn’t as untouchable as she wanted everyone to believe. It was the first time since everything had started that I felt something other than anger or despair. It was small, fragile, but unmistakable: hope.
I wasn’t expecting Alyssa to approach me again, but there she was, waiting outside the library after school.
“Can we talk?” she said cautiously, glancing over her shoulder. “I think you need to know something.” Her expression was nervous, her hands twisting in front of her as if she wasn’t sure she should even be there.
“What are you talking about?”
Alyssa checked the hallway twice before speaking, her voice barely above a whisper. “Vanessa’s losing it. She’s more paranoid than I’ve ever seen her. And it’s because of you.”
“Me?” I asked, incredulous. “What could she possibly be afraid of? She’s already humiliated me in front of the whole school.”
“She thinks you’re going to find a way to ruin her, the way she ruined you.”
“Why would I do that?” I shot her a look, my voice rising slightly as frustration bubbled to the surface.
“To get revenge.” Alyssa shrugged, her tone matter-of-fact, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
I shook my head firmly. “I’m not going to stoop to that. I’m not her.”
Honestly, her words were a bit flattering. Vanessa had always been untouchable, confident in her ability to manipulate everyone around her. I felt a strange sense of satisfaction knowing Vanessa might actually feel cornered for once. In a way, I was glad she got a small taste of what I endure every single day. The idea that she could be scared of me felt... surreal, though.
“You say that now, but what if you had the chance?” Alyssa tilted her head, watching me closely. “What if you could knock her off her pedestal without even breaking a sweat?”
