The cafeteria was the last place I wanted to be, but skipping lunch wasn’t an option—not when Vanessa would use it as more ammunition against me. I slid into my usual seat next to Sarah, keeping my head down and my focus on the sandwich I wasn’t hungry for.
Vanessa's voice pierced through the chaos with ruthless precision. "I'm just saying, some people should really think twice before airing their slutty text messages."
"Do you ever shut up?"
The unfamiliar voice sliced through the air, a blend of sharpness and indifference. The laughter surrounding Vanessa dissipated instantly, and as I looked up, there he was: a stranger, tall and lean, his leather jacket draped effortlessly over his frame, dark locks cascading into intense eyes. His smirk rivaled Vanessa's, his gaze unwavering.
"Excuse me?" Vanessa's tone turned glacial.
"You heard me. Or do you need it spelled out? You're draining all the life from this place."
The cafeteria fell silent, tension suffocating the room. Vanessa stuttered, her face aflame as the guy sauntered away, unaffected and purposeful in each step.
I blinked, stunned by the encounter.
"Who was that?" Sarah whispered in awe.
"I have no idea," I confessed, my pulse racing.

Later, I discovered his name: Caleb Torres. He was the new kid—freshly transferred—and had already carved out a reputation for wreaking havoc. Whispers about him spread like wildfire: brawls at his previous school, a reckless joyride on a motorcycle without a license, and a demeanor that seemed to make teachers despise him instantly.
I convinced myself I didn’t care, that he was none of my concern. But the next time our paths crossed—he was lounging against the lockers, that same infuriatingly smug grin plastered on his face—I felt an unexpected tug, a surge of intrigue I couldn’t dismiss.
“Hey,” he greeted, his eyes sparking with mischief as they landed on me. “How’s the drama queen doing?”
I scowled. “I’m not a princess.”
“No kidding,” he replied, his grin stretching wider. “You’ve got way more fire than that.”
His words ignited something within me. “If you’re trying to be charming, it’s a total fail.”
“Who said I’m trying? Maybe I’m just calling it like I see it.”
I folded my arms, battling the warmth crawling up my neck. “Well, go call it somewhere else. I’ve got more important things to focus on.”
“Like what? Buffing your crown?”
I couldn’t suppress a wry smile. “You really think you’re hilarious, don’t you?”
“Not just hilarious. Irresistible,” he replied, his tone teasing. “Catch you later.”
