I didn’t mean to overhear it. I was walking past the locker room, when I heard Vanessa’s voice echoing inside. I froze, unable to help myself.
“He’s so easy to manipulate,” she said, her tone dripping with mockery. “A little laugh, a little touch, and Caleb does whatever I want. It’s pathetic, really.”
Another voice chimed in, one of her friends. “And Emma? She hasn’t figured it out?”
Vanessa laughed. “Please. She’s too wrapped up in her little fairy tale to see what’s right in front of her. Caleb’s just as bad as the rest of them.”
My chest tightened, anger bubbling up inside me. I wanted to burst in and confront her, but instead, I turned and walked away, my mind racing.
***
It all came to a head when I walked into the cafeteria and saw Vanessa sitting at Caleb’s table, her hand on his shoulder, leaning in like she owned him. My stomach twisted as I watched her laugh at something he said, her nails dragging lightly across his arm. Caleb didn’t push her away, and that was all it took for the anger simmering inside me to boil over.
I didn’t think—I just marched straight to her. “Get away from him.”
Vanessa looked up, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “Emma,” she said sweetly, tilting her head. “Is there a problem?”
“Yeah, there is.,” I snapped. “You’re the problem.”
Caleb shifted uncomfortably, glancing between us. “Emma, come on, don’t—”
“Don’t what? She’s bragging about how she can control you. You think I’m just going to stand here and let her act like this?”
“Oh, Emma,” Vanessa said, standing up slowly, her hand sliding off Caleb’s shoulder. “You’re so... fragile. It’s kind of sad, actually.”
“Fragile?” I shot back. “You’re the one who can’t stand not being the center of attention. Is that what this is about, Vanessa? You’re mad that Logan didn’t want you, so now you’re coming after Caleb?”
Her eyes narrowed, her smile tightening. “Please. Logan was a distraction. Caleb, though... he’s fun. And if I wanted him, Emma, you couldn’t stop me.”
My heart pounded as I stepped closer, the rage building with every word out of her mouth. “You don’t care about Caleb. You don’t care about anyone but yourself. All you want is to ruin people’s lives because you can’t stand being irrelevant.”
Vanessa’s smile dropped entirely, and her voice turned cold. “Irrelevant? Look around, Emma. You’re the one who’s barely holding on. Caleb’s with you out of pity, Logan’s done with you, and I’m just here to clean up the mess you made of your sad little life.”
My hands clenched into fists. “You’re pathetic. You don’t even like Caleb. You just want to take everything from me because you can’t stand that I’ve got something you don’t!!!.”
“And what’s that?” she sneered. “A boyfriend who’s bored out of his mind? A reputation as the girl who can’t keep her place in line? You’re nothing, Emma. Nothing.”
The words hit hard, but my anger outweighed the sting. “You’re a bully,” I said, my voice rising. “You’ve always been a bully, and no amount of fake smiles and expensive clothes can hide that. You can have all the attention in the world, Vanessa, but deep down, you’ll always be empty.”
Her face twisted with fury. “You don’t know anything about me.”
“I know enough,” I snapped. “I know you can’t stand it when someone’s not afraid of you. Well, guess what? I’m not afraid of you anymore.”
She stepped closer, our faces inches apart. “Maybe you should be.”
Before I could stop myself, I lunged at her.I shoved her back.
The cafeteria went silent as Vanessa stumbled, her eyes wide with shock. For a moment, it felt like the whole world froze.
Then she lunged at me.
Her nails scratched at my arm as I tried to push her off, her voice shrill as she shouted insults I couldn’t even make out. I grabbed her wrists, shoving her away again, but she came back harder, her hand catching my hair and pulling. Pain shot through my scalp, and I yanked free, shoving her so hard she fell into one of the tables.
“Enough!” Caleb’s voice cut through the chaos, but it was too late. The damage was done. “Both of you need to chill. This is ridiculous.”
Vanessa stood, her hair a mess, her face flushed with anger. “You’re going to regret this,” she hissed, her voice low and venomous.
“Bring it,” I shot back, my chest heaving.
Caleb stepped between us, his hands up. “Both of you need to chill,” he said, his tone firm. “This is ridiculous.”
“She started it,” Vanessa said, smoothing her hair as she glared at me. “She’s unhinged.”
I laughed bitterly. “You’re unbelievable.”
“Emma,” Caleb said, turning to me, his expression serious. “Let’s just go, okay?”
I hesitated, my hands still trembling with adrenaline. Finally, I nodded, letting him guide me out of the cafeteria. But Vanessa’s words followed me, echoing in my mind like a warning.
“You’ll regret this, Emma,” she had said.
