Noise pulled Felicia from sleep. Sudden. Jarring. Her body reacted before her mind caught up. She sat up sharply, blankets falling away.
The courtyard. Sounds coming from outside. Voices and movement and something that sounded like running feet.
Felicia's hands moved automatically. She reached the children's beds in seconds. Her palms touched Danny's shoulder, then Max's. Checking. Both boys still slept, undisturbed by whatever was happening below.
She exhaled slowly and moved to the door. The corridor stretched empty in both directions. But light spilled through the windows facing the courtyard. Flashlights cutting through darkness in deliberate patterns.
Warriors ran formations. Training exercise. Their boots hit packed earth in rhythmic sequences. Commands carried on night air, harsh and military.
Damien stood by the door leading to the courtyard. His voice carried clearly, directing the drill. Then he turned his head. Saw her standing there. His words cut off mid-sentence.
Felicia walked closer. "Stop this."
Her tone came out sharp. Cutting. No question embedded in the command. Damien's hand went up immediately. Palm flat. The signal for halt.
"Stop." He called it out to the warriors.
The running ceased. Flashlights steadied. Warriors froze in formation, waiting for further instruction. Felicia closed the distance between herself and Damien.
"Training without my consent." Her voice dropped several degrees. "That's a violation."
Cold. Final. The boundary stated clearly. Damien met her eyes.
"My mistake." His tone stayed level, accepting.
No "I'm the Alpha" or attempts to justify the exercise. Just acknowledgment of error. Felicia's jaw worked.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Direct question. Demanding honest answer. Damien didn't look away.
"I rushed." Two words. No embellishment or excuses wrapped around the truth.
"No more." Felicia spoke it as absolute boundary.
"No more." Damien repeated it with the same brevity.
A sound came from behind Felicia. Small footsteps in the corridor. She turned. Danny stood in the doorway, rubbing his eyes with small fists.
Felicia moved to him without speaking. Her hand reached out and took his, fingers wrapping around his smaller ones. She guided him back toward the room with gentle but firm pressure.
No yelling. No harsh commands. Just physical direction. Danny followed, still half-asleep and compliant.
Damien stayed where he was. He didn't step forward or try to help. Didn't attempt to be the parent first or override her handling of the situation. Just maintained position while she managed their son.
Felicia settled Danny back in bed. Pulled the blanket higher. Whispered reassurance. When she returned to the corridor, Damien had dismissed the warriors. The courtyard stood empty and dark again.
Later, Felicia stood by the window in her wing. Her eyes tracked the empty courtyard below. Her chest rose and fell with controlled breaths. Measured. Deliberate. Preventing panic from showing in her posture or expression.
The children couldn't see fear. Couldn't sense the way her heart hammered against her ribs. So she controlled it. Forced her breathing to stay steady even as her mind replayed the sudden awakening.
Footsteps approached behind her. Damien's presence registered before he spoke. He stopped at safe distance.
"I cancelled the training." His voice came out quiet. "For your calm. Not as discipline."
Felicia turned her head slightly. "It's not for my calm."
Sharp. Correcting. "It's because you respect my rules."
The distinction mattered. Not him giving her special treatment out of pity. Him following boundaries she'd established. Damien nodded.
"You're right." No argument about wording or attempts to maintain his original framing.
Felicia's fingers tightened on the window frame. "Any loud movement at night brings me back."
Her voice stayed even but the admission cost something. "Back to when I was running."
The trauma stated plainly. No elaborate explanation needed. Damien stood silent for a moment.
"I remember." Not "I'm sorry" or attempts at apology.
Just acknowledgment that he'd heard and would adjust. Then he took a step back. Creating more distance. Not pressing his presence into her awareness during this vulnerable moment.
Felicia allowed him to remain nearby. But she controlled when the conversation ended. When she'd said what needed saying.
"Go to your post." Clear instruction.
Damien turned and left immediately. No lingering. No attempts to extend the interaction or offer more reassurance. Just compliance with her directive.
Felicia watched him go. Noted the absence of wounded pride or resentment. He'd violated a boundary. She'd called it out. He'd accepted correction and adjusted. The pattern held.
She moved away from the window and called the children to her. Max climbed onto the small couch. Danny sat beside him with his book. Normal domestic scene.
"Everything okay, Mom?" Danny's question came out careful.
"Everything's fine." Felicia kept her tone steady. "Just some late training. It's done now."
She sat with them and helped Max with a puzzle. Acted like nothing unusual had happened. But her shoulders sat lower than they had that morning. The tension visible in the set of her spine, the way she held her neck.
When she glanced at the window again, checking the courtyard one more time, her eye caught movement in the corridor beyond her door. Damien stood there. But not close. Positioned farther away near the stairs.
Not hovering. Not standing guard directly outside where his presence would press on her awareness. Just maintaining security from appropriate distance.
The distinction registered. He wasn't hanging over her. Wasn't using protection as excuse for proximity she hadn't granted. Just doing his job from a position that respected her need for space.
Felicia returned her attention to the children. Max's puzzle slowly took shape. Danny's book held his focus. The evening settled into routine despite the disruption.
But the tension lived in Felicia's shoulders. In the way her breathing required conscious control. The night training had triggered something. Memories of running. Of fear that made her grab her children and flee into darkness.
Damien had stopped it immediately when she said. Had accepted full responsibility without defensive excuses. Had adjusted his position to give her more space after.
Small actions. But together they meant he was learning. That boundaries violated accidentally could be corrected if the person actually listened and changed.
Not enough to erase what had been broken. Not sufficient to rebuild trust completely. But real progress nonetheless. Measurable. Building toward something that might eventually become partnership.
Felicia's shoulders gradually eased. The controlled breathing became more natural. And outside her door, Damien maintained his post at appropriate distance.
Two people learning to navigate triggers and boundaries. Testing whether discipline held even when mistakes happened. Building something fragile through honest correction.
One adjusted position at a time.
