Hiding My Twin Pups From their Alpha Dad

Chapter 115

Ch. 115 / 120 May 04, 2026

Felicia noticed it during breakfast. Danny whispered his request for more juice. Max asked for his toy in a voice barely louder than breath.

They were whispering in their own room. In the space that should have been safe. The realization hit her like a fist to the chest, and anger surged hot and immediate through her veins.

She set down her cup with controlled force. "We're going outside."

Danny and Max looked up, surprise clear on their small faces. Felicia crouched to their level, bringing herself down to meet their eyes. "We're having one hour of normal life."

Movement at the door. Damien's shape filled the frame, but he stopped at the threshold. "Where do you want to take them?"

His tone stayed neutral, asking for information without challenging. Felicia stood slowly. "Internal garden. Minimal visible security."

Damien nodded once. "Visible guards to minimum?"

"Yes."

He raised his radio and spoke quietly. No dramatic commands, no showing off his authority. Just efficient orders delivered in a voice that wouldn't carry beyond necessary ears.

Five minutes later, they walked through the packhouse toward the garden. Felicia held Max's hand. Danny walked beside her, his steps careful and measured. Too careful for a child his age.

The garden doors opened onto green space. Trees created shade, and a stone path wound between flower beds. Benches sat at intervals, weathered wood that had held generations of pack members.

Max pulled free from Felicia's hand and ran. Actually ran, his small legs pumping hard as he raced toward the nearest bench. Danny hesitated for only a second before following.

Then Danny laughed. The sound burst out of him, high and bright and completely unguarded. Felicia's chest seized, her breath catching at the pure joy in that sound.

She didn't call out "be careful." Didn't warn them to slow down or watch their step. Just let them run and play and be children for the first time in weeks.

Damien positioned himself at the edge of the path. Not in the center of the garden, not hovering over their space. Just there, visible if needed but not intrusive.

Danny's foot caught on an uneven stone. He stumbled, arms windmilling for balance. Felicia was moving before he hit the ground, crossing the distance in long strides.

Damien took one step forward. Then stopped, his body going still. Waiting. Felicia reached Danny first and checked his hands and knees for scrapes.

"You can." The words came out short and permissive.

Damien closed the remaining distance and helped Danny stand. His hands were gentle but efficient, steadying the boy then releasing immediately. He stepped back as soon as Danny was upright, creating distance without being asked.

Felicia didn't pull Danny away from him. Didn't insert herself between them or make it clear that his help wasn't welcome. Because he'd done exactly what was needed and nothing more.

She guided Danny to a bench and pulled out a tissue. His knee had a small scrape, nothing serious. She wiped away the dirt and checked for embedded stones.

"They need stability." Felicia kept her eyes on Danny's knee as she spoke. "Not constant alert mode."

Damien stood a few feet away. "I can give up some authority if it creates peace for them."

Felicia's hand stilled on the tissue. She looked up at him, searching his expression for signs of performance or manipulation. "Ready to lose status?"

"Yes." No hesitation. "If it reduces risk."

The answer came too fast to be calculated. Felicia pressed the tissue against Danny's knee one more time. "That's not a small thing."

Damien nodded. He didn't launch into speeches about sacrifice or how much he'd give up for them. Just acknowledged that she was right and left it there.

Max ran back to them. His cheeks were flushed, his hair sticking to his forehead with sweat. He held up his arms toward Damien. "Up."

Damien's eyes went immediately to Felicia. Asking. Waiting for permission before even considering action.

Felicia nodded once. Damien bent and lifted Max, settling the boy against his hip. He took exactly three steps, letting Max see the garden from higher up. Then he lowered him back to the ground.

No "Don't you want to stay up here?" No attempt to extend the moment or claim more time than she'd silently authorized. Just what she'd given permission for and nothing beyond it.

Felicia felt her shoulders relax. The control stayed with her, solid and undisputed. Damien wasn't trying to leverage brief contact into more access.

She stood and walked past him. Closer than usual, close enough that her shoulder nearly brushed his arm. But there was no sharp impulse to pull away, no instinct screaming danger.

Because he didn't move toward her. Didn't shift his weight or angle his body in a way that would close the gap. He stayed exactly where he was.

"I'll leave you peace." His voice was quiet, meant only for her.

"Do that." Felicia's response came out even and controlled. No warmth, no encouragement. Just acknowledgment of what he'd said.

Damien accepted it without visible reaction. He turned and walked to the far edge of the garden path. Positioned himself where he could still see them but wasn't part of their space.

The center of the garden opened up. Felicia sat back on the bench and watched her children play. Max chased a butterfly, his laughter carrying bright and clear. Danny found a stick and started drawing patterns in the dirt.

Normal childhood moments. The kind they should have been having all along without fear and constant vigilance shadowing every action.

Felicia's hands rested on her knees, no longer clenched into fists. Her breathing came easier. The garden smelled like flowers and fresh earth, and the sun was warm on her face.

She'd given Damien permission for brief contact. Had let him help Danny, had allowed him to hold Max. And he'd done exactly what those permissions covered without trying to expand them.

That restraint mattered. The way he'd stepped back immediately, the way he'd walked to the garden's edge without needing to be told. Those actions spoke louder than any promises could have.

The door to her wing stood with the inner bolt unlocked. Damien kept his distance unless invited closer. And her children were laughing again, playing without whispers and fear.

Maybe this was what stable ground felt like. Not fixed and unchanging, but steady enough to build on. Solid enough to trust with careful weight.

Felicia looked across the garden to where Damien stood. He was watching her children, his expression neutral but his posture relaxed. Not demanding attention or recognition. Just there, fulfilling his role without overstepping.

She turned back to Danny and Max. Let herself exist in this moment of peace they'd carved out. And for the first time in a long time, she didn't feel the need to prepare for the next threat. Just this hour of normal life, exactly as promised.
