Chapter 139 The test read positive
Lenora's POV
She raised her head up and pointed at herself "Me?" She said in a high tone before blinking twice to compose herself. "I recently turned twenty six ma'am."
Twenty six. I repeated to myself nodding my head.
"Did you test if you are my daughter? Is that yours?" I asked, rasing the tube up and she instantly shook her head.
"No..." She laughed putting out her hand. "I know my parents. I just went to the lab and found this one there" She explained.
I pursed my lips handing the tube over to Joan who took it with both hands.
"You do this one, I'm off to check on some of the patients".
Joan looked at me in surprise, and I couldn't blame her.
The past few years, I had always been the one conducing the test alone and she knew it.
But she had been working for me for over ten years, and I knew her very well. She was trust worthy enough, plus there was no guarantee that it could or could not be the right one.
I gave her a tight smile before walking back to my office.
I had said I was going to check up on some patients, but I could slowly feel myself starting to get emotional with all this drama about finding Emerald.
Every year we did the same thing, and I always got disappointed, would today be just like those days?
My beautiful daughter.
My eyes closed involuntarily and the picture of Emerald appeared inside my head.
Her cute smile as she twirled around the garden, her long soft and beautiful blonde hair that bounced on her shoulders as she did that.
Why... Why did I allow myself lose her?
Tears ran down from my close eyelids, as the unfortunate day that I lost my baby girl came back to me.
It was just another Saturday morning, and my four year old daughter insisted that I took her to the gardens. Raine and Owen had both gone out with their father to play cricket, and since Emerald was still so young, she couldn't go with them.
I was the only one at home with her that day, but I was also busy. I tried to disagree, but she kept on asking and asking, and I couldn't say no to her cute face.
I took her to the park gardens but kept working on my laptop, just occasionally glancing at her with a smile.
But then suddenly, I got a call from an important client and I had to take it.
It was for the new hospital, this hospital right here.
I came minutes later, and Emerald was gone.
I didn't panic at first, thought it was just a bad joke and went over to the security department to ask for her.
We checked the CCTV footages, and that was when panic set in because I watched as Emerald left the park on her own, following a freaking balloon, and then she was out of sight, even for the cameras.
What even got me even more anxious was that, she left as soon as I did, which was almost twenty minutes ago.
She could have gone anywhere by then.
I frantically searched around all the nearest houses to the park, but she just not there. I called Simon, my husband and explained everything to him in a hurry, and then he deployed dozens of men to search for her.
They searched for hours and hours, but still nothing.
I was the one at fault. If only I had just stopped working for a second and focused on just her, she would have never just walked away from me.
I silently sobbed putting my head on my desk.
Every year, every single year I remembered this day in tears.
The day I lost my baby girl.
" Mrs Nielson..." My door got barged opened and I looked up immediately.
Joan paused looking surprised as she held the door handle. " I'm so sorry ma'am."
I sniffled wiping my tears with my hands. " What are you doing here?" I asked glaring at her.
' I thought I locked the damn door '
"I... I'm so sorry ma'am, but I thought you needed to see this urgently".
It was then I noticed the piece of paper in her hands.
" What's..." I coughed clearing my throat. " What's that?"
My voice sounded weak, curtsey of crying for... How long?
" What time is it?" I asked looking turning my phone around.
"What?"
It was past three. I've been crying in my office for almost five hours!
" I really didn't want to disturb you since I know what today means to you Ma, but you really need to see this ". Joan said with a huge overexcited smile.
" You have been saying the same thing over and over, what do I need to see? " I gestured for her to come over and place the document on my hand which she did.
" Now what is this here..."
My voice trailed off as soon as my eyes caught the words at the bottom of the paper.
" I personally cross checked this test, three different times with three different instruments, but it came out the same ". Joan said again sounding so happy.
" Could... " I swallowed, my eyes glued to the paper. " Could this be real? "
POSITIVE
The test read positive.
" Ma I was also in doubt so like I said, I tested it three more times. It's real "
Oh...
A sudden surge of joy, rose up my chest and I blinked back the tears forming in my eyes again.
This... She's my daughter?
But this wasn't the first time I had felt this way. Like I've found my daughter, but it was a facade.
I ran my tongue over my lips before looking up to Joan. " I know you think I'm suffering and you might want to help me, but doing something like this... Joan, I won't forgive it". I threatened.
I was almost loosing hope that I'll find my daughter, and then something like this happens?
Even if she did it for the right reasons, there was no way I would forgive her.
Joan looked confused as she shook her head. " Ma, what do you mean? Do you perhaps think I forged this result?" Her voice was laced in hurt and disbelief, but I was definite.
" Something like this have happened before, but it turned out to be fake..."
" That is the reason why I repeated the test. I wanted to be sure before informing you about it. Yes I won't lie, I feel sorry for you that you lost your daughter, but I would never do a thing like that! " She shouted heaving out loud.
I blinked in surprise.
This was the first time Joan has ever spoken out like that.
She had always been a meek, ass licker manager, and that was the reasons I never had a problem with her all this years and Owen never complained about her either, Owen even liked her.
He always said that she was a sharp mouthed but kind lady, I knew the latter, but the former... Today I just found out.
Joan eyes rounded and she took a step back.
' She finally realized who just spoke too '
" I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to lash out like that, it's just..."
"It's alright. You felt hurt, it's fine. I'm just so shocked and emotional right now... " I looked back down at the result in my trembling hands, and my eyes blurred with tears. " Is this really real? "
Joan nodded, pursing her lips.
Oh my...
I held the document close to my chest as I sobbed.
Finally... Please God. Let this be it.
" Well, who... Who is she?" I asked sniffling while getting up. " Take me to her, I want to see her at once".
Joan took a step back, suddenly looking nervous "That's the thing ma'am, her name isn't written there."
What?
My smile froze, actually my entire body. "What... What do you mean?"
"I...I" Joan shuddered. "I don't know who she is"
