After Divorce: Loved by the Secret Billionaire CEO

Chapter 142 Silent love

Ch. 142 / 155 Apr 28, 2026

Rachel's POV

I froze as I stared at the older woman.

Ethan? In love with me?

" How can you lie so freely?" I asked after a while.

Why can't I believe it?

Why can't I just tell myself it's the truth and actually believe it?

Maybe it was because I had seen what really was real, and I couldn't even allow myself to pretend anymore.

"Lie? " Victoria looked shocked as she stood up from the bed. " Why do you think it's a lie huh?" She argued.

"Isn't it not? " I retorted before releasing a sigh "Ethan can't be in love with me. He probably doesn't even like me that much ".

I felt my heart sink into my stomach as soon as those words left my mouth.

Why was I feeling disappointed with my own words? They were the truth. The sooner I began telling myself the truth, the better it would be for both me and... Well me. I'm the only one suffering anyway.

Victoria shook her head and looked down at me with pity. " You really are a fool, Rachel, since you can't see what's right in front of you. "

A fool?

" Hey, I don't think we've reached the stage of insulting each other". I called out getting annoyed with the entire conversation. " And I think the only fool here is you for still thinking a man that wants nothing to do with me, is in love with me ".

Victoria scoffed. " Forgive me, but why the fuck do you think you're in this house? "

"First, this can't be called a house; it's a freaking mansion, a palace if you may, and second, I... I don't know ".

How was I to know when Ethan hadn't said anything yet?

Maybe I, indeed, was a fool for going with Ethan back to his house even after I knew that he had an affair with my dead worst enemy.

" Rachel, I would have said it's time for you to read between the lines, but I can see you've been doing that way too much. " She began and I immediately glared at her.

Was that an insult of some kind?

I arched a brow looking at her in surprise.

I would have never believed in a hundred years that Victoria, the ever-sweet house manager, would say something like this to me.

She sighed her voice coming down and turning mellow. " All I ask is for you to give Ethan a chance to explain. Hear his own side of this entire thing because I'm tired of seeing him come back home disappointed every single day just because of this, please ".

I bit down on my lips resisting the urge to roll my eyes.

Everyone was asking me to do the same thing.

'Oh please give Ethan a chance to explain '

' Let the guy say his side of the story '

' Ethan might have a reason '

What fucking possible reason could he possibly have?

What explanation could he give that would be different from the multiple scenarios my brain had played out for me?

" Fine. I'll let Ethan explain his side of the story so I can be fully vindicated for my actions". I agreed nodding my head after a while.

" That's all I ask. " Victoria said, her lips hooked up in the small, kind smile it always had, apart from a few minutes ago when it disappeared. " Please eat your food ".

I gave her a bewildered look as she turned and left.

' Maybe it wasn't only Ethan that was bipolar. ' I thought, before shaking it off and focusing on my food.

All my doubts about Victoria probably putting something in the food disappeared.

She wouldn't ask me to talk to Ethan if she was just going to kill me in the next few minutes.

" This is good ". I moaned taking a spoon of the food.

For the past few days, all the food I had been eating was from Jens, so they were extremely delicious. I had my doubts about the taste of the food from the beginning but after putting a bite of it in my mouth, all I could say was that it was good.

Victoria would make an amazing chef.

" No wonder Ethan still keeps her around".

I could keep the lady for her cooking skills alone, damn!

' Maybe I would finally settle and learn how to cook one day? ' I thought as soon as the food on the plate had completely disappeared.

It would be nice to have someone complimenting my dishes like this.

But well, too bad I didn't know how to cook, as wasn't really in the right state of mind to learn at the moment and also the right State.

...

Ethan's POV

As I walked down the stairs, my eyes went to Rachel's room and it lingered.

The woman I loved was now back in my reach, back in my house, but why did it seem like she was even further away from me?

Rachel had been in her room since she was discharged from the hospital yesterday. I was even shocked when she agreed to come with me to my house.

I was more than prepared to convince her, but she just agreed. I had thought that she had maybe forgiven me or gotten the entire story, but seeing how she was right now, I doubted it.

Or maybe she didn't want to hear my side because she didn't even care?

The guy who visited Rachel yesterday when we were about to leave came back to my mind.

Kyle Dolan, the owner of the bar.

I remembered him immediately but I refused to let it show. He was one of the many guys who pursued Rachel in school but never succeeded in capturing her heart, since it was with that son of a bitch at that time.

Could it be possible that he and Rachel were in a relationship?

No, I shook my head.

I can't think of the worst now, because that was it.

How could I lose her again even without trying?

I gave the door a last glance before walking away and down the stairs.

Rachel still didn't want to talk to me, so I purposely made myself scarce since she came back so we wouldn't find ourselves in any kind of awkward situation.

I wanted to see her so bad, but I had to make do with what I got.

As long as she was okay, and under my watch, I could handle anything else.

I was about to head out the door when I changed direction and went into the kitchen Instead.

" Sir Wright"

" Sir Wright".

The two other maids in the kitchen greeted her, and I nodded in acknowledgment.

" Good morning, Mr. Wright; I hope you had a good night's sleep. " Victoria greeted after the maids. She was so busy that she only noticed my arrival when the other maids were greeting me.

I actually had an incredibly restless night.

It was different from when Rachel was in jail or the hospital, but this time she was right under my roof, yet she was still mad at me.

That was a different kind of pain altogether. Nevertheless, I nodded, forcing a smile to my face. " It wasn't that bad ".

Victoria probably saw through my lies because she gave me a look that meant that she did. She cleared her throat, and the two maids in the kitchen bowed to me before leaving us alone.

"Hopefully, the misunderstanding between Rachel and I will be cleared soon, and maybe then I'll sleep well. " I said breaking the silence that enveloped us. " So how is she?"

Victoria sighed. " She's doing good, and I'm making sure she eats her meals on time."

I nodded. That was all I needed to hear.

"I'll be going now".

"Won't you eat breakfast?" Victoria said, calling my back as she pointed to the already-made food, and I shook my head. " If I do that, Rachel won't come out to eat ". I answered before leaving the kitchen.
