The hospital room was a whirlwind of activity, voices overlapping as nurses and doctors moved swiftly to prepare for the emergency C-section. Alessia lay on the bed, her face pale but determined, clutching Theo’s hand like it was the only thing tethering her to reality. The beeping of monitors filled the room, blending with the murmur of instructions and hurried footsteps.
“Theo,” a nurse called, stepping closer. “Are you planning to come into the operating room?”
Theo’s heart skipped a beat. His eyes flicked to Alessia, who looked up at him with wide, frightened eyes.
“You’re coming, right?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Please, Theo. I can’t do this alone.”
He bent down, cupping her face gently. “I wouldn’t dream of leaving you alone. I’m here. Every step of the way.”
The nurse handed Theo a pair of scrubs and motioned for him to follow. “We need to move quickly. You’ll need to suit up.”
Theo squeezed Alessia’s hand one last time before reluctantly letting go. “I’ll be right back, okay? I promise.”
Minutes felt like hours as Theo rushed to change into the scrubs. His hands trembled slightly as he tied the mask around his face, his mind racing with a million worries. What if something went wrong? What if Alessia was in danger?
He shook his head, forcing himself to focus. She needs you to be strong. With that resolve, he hurried back to the operating room, where Alessia was being prepped for surgery.
The room was bright and sterile, the air thick with tension. Alessia lay on the table, her lower half draped in a blue surgical sheet. Her eyes immediately sought Theo, and he moved quickly to her side, taking her hand in his.
“I’m here,” he whispered, brushing his thumb over her knuckles. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“I’m scared,” Alessia admitted, her voice breaking.
“I know,” Theo said softly, leaning closer. “But you’re the strongest person I know. You’ve got this. And I’ll be right here the whole time.”
The medical team worked efficiently, their movements precise and practiced, but to Theo, it felt chaotic. Machines beeped, surgical instruments clinked, and the doctor’s voice cut through the noise.
“Alright, Alessia,” Dr. Kim said, her tone calm but focused. “You’re going to feel some pressure, but it won’t hurt. We’re going to get your baby out safely.”
Alessia nodded weakly, her grip on Theo’s hand tightening with each passing second. Theo stayed close, murmuring words of encouragement and pressing gentle kisses to her temple.
“You’re doing great,” he said, his voice steady despite the storm of emotions swirling inside him. “Just a little longer, and we’ll meet her.”
Alessia let out a shaky laugh. “She better be worth all this.”
Theo smiled, his heart aching with love and admiration. “She’s already worth it.”
The minutes dragged on, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife. Alessia’s breathing was shallow, her eyes darting to Theo for reassurance. He kept his gaze locked on hers, determined to be her anchor.
Suddenly, a cry pierced the air—a sharp, tiny wail that seemed to make the entire room pause. Alessia’s eyes widened, tears streaming down her face as she whispered, “Is that her?”
Dr. Kim looked up, her expression softening as she held up a wriggling, crying baby. “She’s here. It’s a girl!”
“A girl,” Theo repeated, his voice choked with emotion. “We have a daughter.”
The nurses quickly cleaned and swaddled the baby, bringing her over to Alessia. When they placed the tiny bundle in her arms, Alessia let out a sob, her entire body shaking with relief and joy.
“Hi, baby girl,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You’re so beautiful.”
Theo leaned over, his hand gently brushing the baby’s cheek. “Avery,” he said softly, the name they had chosen weeks ago finally feeling real. “Welcome to the world, Avery.”
