Methis Delis POV
Both Jamal and Xander looked like they could kill for me that day. But was that a good thing or a bad thing? I did not know how exactly to process it but I believed everything was going to iron itself out eventually.
I picked up my phone and scrolled aimlessly for a while. I scrolled past me and Sophia's last texts to each other. I tapped her number but froze at the call button. Did she hate me? What would I think if someone who had previously fought my father called my phone? Jamal who she must have known as my boyfriend had messed up her bother badly and had beaten her for doing what all sisters would do if they found their brother in a fight – join in.
All she could say was 'fuck off,' I concluded and hit the call button. The call went through but there is was no response on her end. She had not answered it, but she did not decline either. Maybe she was busy or had left her phone somewhere she could not hear the ringing. Unlike Sophia, I had to admit but any hypothesis was acceptable when you really needed to talk to someone.
I strolled down to make breakfast after my failed attempts to reach Sophia. Breakfast was simple. Bacon, egg, and milk. I had accidentally made too much as I was not concentrating anymore on what I was doing. Regrettably, I had also burnt a few pitch black in the frying pan. When my father came to the table to eat, he noticed the burnt ones on his plate. He did not shout, he did not make a fuss about it or anything, he just placed it aside and called my attention.
"Sophia?" he called.
"Yes."
"Join me," he said. I took five bacons into my plate and joined him by the table. "Are you OK?"he asked.
"Of course I am." I looked away. I did not want him to notice anything wrong with me. He probably had problems of his own and did not want to bother himself with mine.
"Guess who is terrible at lying?" he joked.
I smiled at him. He has always known how to detect my falsehoods. I had not been a very good liar anyway so it must not have been hard to master that skill.
"Something is bothering you, Methis. I want to know it." His eyes became serious and his stare bore deep into my soul and burnt my heart.
"It's Sophia, dad," I blurted out.
"Your best friend?"
"Yes."
"What about her?"
"I think she hates me."
"Why would you think that?"
"Her and Jamal fought."
The look on his face said it all. How could Jamal and Sophia fight? Jamal was a man in his thirties, Sophia was a little above a teenager. Jamal was also significantly bigger than Sophia so how the hell did fight?
"I know what it sounds like but it happened." I assured him. "He beat her and I think she is mad at me for it I don't know."
"How shameless can that Jamal be?" My father's voice betrayed his anger.
"It was her brother who picked the fight," I interjected, explaining more. I did not know why I was defending Jamal but I did.
After listening to my explanation of how Xander had started the fight and how Jamal might have gotten carried away, my father just shook his head silently.
I knew something was up so I asked. "What?"
"Jamal came here the other day," my father responded.
My throat hook with bacon in it. I coughed and swallowed after flushing loads of milk down my system. "Why?" I asked. More to myself than to him but he heard it nonetheless.
"He came looking for you. He holds a thought that he can have you back to him."
"What did you tell him?"
"Whatever I told him can be amended. I ask you now, what do you want?"
I stay silent for some time contemplating the question. What did I really want? I liked Jamal but I also liked Xander. Both were interesting to be around but my feelings for Jamal had died down. He was more like a threat than even a friend though sometimes I felt that flame kindling in my heart. I loved his kids. They were nice. Twins: a boy and a girl, a prince and a princess, a beauty and a loud mouth. That was surely something worth admiring.
Sometimes I envisioned how a life with Jamal would be all again. It was nice to be in the wolf realm. I really enjoyed my time there. There were good people in the palace and there also was Conrad who I really liked for his personality. The White Witch too was another nice person. Warm in her doings and wise in her words. She was a woman to admire.
Inasmuch as I might love to live with him again, to be his Luna, I could not help but think that he only loved me for the wrong reason. A reason I feared the most.
"You love him?" my father's devastated-looking eyes snapped me from my thoughts. "You don't possibly love that monster, do you?"
"Please, dad. Let me think." I almost spilled tears. "He loves me."
My father's expression softened. "But?"
"I'm afraid he loves me for the wrong reasons, dad."
"Which is?"
"I look a lot like the Dark Witch."
"The who now?" my father asked.
"I'm sorry for not filing you in on that part. The Dark Witch was his first love. She was a witch who he fell in love with long ago. She was all he cared about. He was obsessed. He thought she was too but the problem was that she had other plans. She was using him the entire time and he did not notice it. While I was there, I tried to learn more about her but he would not allow. An insecurity of his, I suspect."
My father was silent for a while then he muttered to himself. "Men never forget their first love. Apparently, wolves too."
"Who was yours?" I asked him.
"What?"
"Who was yours? Your first love."
My father smiled at me and gently took my hands. "She was the most beautiful woman I've met. Not just beautiful but we'll behaved too. God has called her unfortunately but before she left, she left me with a gift that I don't go a day without thinking about."
I now my head as I smile at his words. Notice a glister in his eyes. Tears. I don't say anything anymore. I did not like it when I reminded him of mum. He had loved in ways I only read in children books.
