Jamal’s POV
I woke up, already feeling exhausted and drained, I allowed my body to revert to its human form as the involuntary transformation subsided. I lay there for a moment, the gritty sand beneath me a stark reminder of the ordeal I had just faced. The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a warm glow across the island.
As evening descended, I woke from a restless slumber. My surroundings were eerily quiet, except for the distant murmur of the ocean. Pushing myself up, I took stock of his situation. The city lights shimmered in the distance, a connection to my realm that seemed both distant and unattainable.
My exploration of the island unfolded like a surreal odyssey. The air was thick with the scent of salt and untamed nature as I ventured into the heart of the unknown. The landscape revealed itself in layers — dense clusters of foliage, rugged terrain, and mysterious, hidden corners.
The island's interior held a complex tapestry of life. Vibrant flowers bloomed in patches, their colors a stark contrast to the muted palette of the surroundings. The soil underfoot shifted from soft sand to rocky outcrops, challenging my every step. Occasionally, the eerie calls of unseen creatures echoed, creating an otherworldly symphony.
Amid the tangled vegetation, I encountered peculiar flora, some with vibrant hues and others with curious shapes. Giant ferns arched overhead, creating a canopy that filtered the dappled sunlight. Butterflies danced in the air, adding a fleeting grace to the rugged terrain.
The island's heart harbored a small freshwater stream, its crystal-clear waters inviting me to quench his thirst. The tranquil sounds of flowing water provided a brief respite from the sense of isolation that hung in the air. I cupped my hands, taking long, refreshing gulps.
Then suddenly, everything changed....
The scene shifted before my eyes, to a dense, humid jungle clearing on a deserted island. Palm trees sway overhead, casting an dappled light on the overgrown ground. Me, sunburnt and ragged, sat slumped against a tree trunk, sweat dripping down his face. My eyes are haunted, darting around as if expecting something. Across from me, sitting on a moss-covered rock, was her, again. She was dressed in a flowing black gown, her eyes glittering with amusement.
"Where's the food?" I asked, my voice coarse, "Where's the water?"
She instead chuckled, "Oh, Jamal, always so impatient. Why can't you just enjoy the moment? Isn't it beautiful here? The rustling leaves, the chirping insects, the smell of decay..."
I scoffed, "Decay is about all there is. I'm starving, I'm dehydrated, and I'm surrounded by nothing but bugs and your annoying presence."
She made a show of showing hurt, "Oh, how unkind. Is this how you treat the woman who once loved you? The woman who gave you everything?"
"You gave me a life of lies and manipulation," I spat.
" Such harsh words." She smiled sweetly, "But I understand. You're afraid. You're lost and alone, just like you always were."
"I'm not afraid! I'm angry. Angry that I ever trusted you. Angry that I let you destroy my life."
She stood up suddenly, springing to her feet, "And what are you going to do about it, Jamal? Are you going to lash out like the pathetic little boy you always were? Or are you going to accept your fate?"
"I won't accept anything from you! I'm getting off this island, and I'm leaving you behind."
"You think you can just walk away?" She asked, "This island is a part of you, Jamal. Just like I am."
" You are not a part of me! You are a figment of my imagination, a hallucination brought on by the heat and the hunger."
She smiled, mischief gleaning in her eyes, "And what a delightful hallucination it is. We could spend eternity together here, in this paradise of our own making."
"No! I'm done with your lies. I'm done with you." I said, trying to maintain my calm
She snapped her fingers, "As you wish."
The clearing seemed to shimmer and shift. The trees transform into twisted, monstrous figures, their branches reaching out like grasping claws. The ground beneath my feet turned to quicksand, sucking me down.
She cackled, her shrill voice grating on my ear, " You brought this upon yourself, Jamal. Now you will face the consequences."
I felt the anger rise again, like it had did yesterday, each time I hallucinated her, it was the same feeling of impotent anger, "No! I won't let you win!"
I dug my heels into the sand, fighting against the pull.
"I'm stronger than you, witch!" I yelled, straining against the sand, trying everything in my power to save myself, "I will not be broken!"
With a surge of strength, I pulled myself free from the quicksand. I lunged towards her, my eyes blazing with determination.
"This ends now!"
"We shall see boy," She said, and raised her hands, summoning a bolt of dark energy.
"This is my will to survive! This is the love that you could never understand!"
Despite the obvious pain distorting her features from expending power on the energy she was generating, he somehow found the will to cackle.
"Love?" She sneered, her lips parting slightly to reveal something I hadn't noticed before...
Yellow, rotten teeth.
"Love?" She continued, "That is what you are going for? Then you are even more foolish than I thought Jamal."
She looked at me, "I might be a hallucination, a figment of your starved, thirsting brain, but your weaknesses? They are very real, Alpha Jamal, and that's why lost to me in the first place."
She bent over to cup my chin in her hands, they were cold, almost freezing cold, like they were made of ice, "I will be back, luv, you haven't seen the last of me."
"Screw, you, witch." I said, my rage apparent by my gritting teeth. She chuckled, "We shall see."
And just like that, she was gone.
I collapsed to my knees, panting, trying to catch my breath, "She's gone..."
The clearing returns to its original state. Jamal collapses to his knees, exhausted but victorious. He looks up at the sun, peeking through the leaves. He knows he still has a long way to go, but for the first time, he feels hope. He will survive this island. He will find his way home.
But bloody hell this was going to be difficult. Very, difficult.
* * *
When hunger clawed at Jamal's stomach, he engaged his wolf instincts, tracking the elusive deer that roamed the island. The pursuit took him through a thicket, his steps calculated to minimize any disturbance. The deer, unaware of its impending fate, grazed peacefully until Jamal made his move.
Jamal swung a paw at the deer but missed and it scampered away hurriedly. Too exhausted to chase the prey down, he turned his attention to a squirrel on a nearby tree.
Jamal sat in the clearing, the raw taste of the squirrel lingering in his mouth. His dissatisfaction was palpable. It wasn't the succulent meat he was used to; instead, it was a reminder of his primal circumstances. Despite his discomfort, hunger demanded appeasement, and the small creature became a fleeting source of sustenance.
As he finished the impromptu meal, he couldn't help but think about Methis and their cubs. Were they safe? Were they waiting for him to return? The distant cityscape served as a constant reminder of the life he longed to return to—a life where the hunt was a choice, not a necessity.
The setting sun cast long shadows across the island, prompting Jamal to consider the practicalities of survival. He needed shelter for the night. Gathering his resolve, he rose from his seated position, surveying the available resources.
The island offered a variety of materials for shelter construction. Jamal moved through the clearing, his mind focused on the task at hand. Fallen branches, leaves, and vines became the building blocks of a makeshift shelter. The primal instincts of a wolf guided his actions, creating a structure that blended with the island's natural surroundings.
As he worked, Jamal's thoughts drifted to Methis. How would she react to his sudden disappearance? Would she understand the dangers he faced in the mysterious realm beneath the city? The urgency to return to his family fueled his determination to conquer the challenges presented by the island.
The shelter took shape—a humble refuge under the island's stars. It wouldn't replace the comfort of their shared den, but it offered a sense of security amidst the unfamiliar terrain. The night descended, enveloping the island in darkness, and Jamal huddled within the shelter, his thoughts returning to the complexities of the journey ahead.
Under the celestial canvas, he found solace in the rhythmic sounds of nature—the rustle of leaves, the distant calls of nocturnal creatures, and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. Sleep, however, remained elusive as his mind grappled with the mysteries of the island and the challenges that awaited him in the days to come.
