Once Upon a Night With My Stepdad

051

Ch. 51 / 85 Dec 06, 2025

Vivian stared at Maxwell, surprised by his statement. She wondered what he meant and immediately got suspicious. She couldn't shake the feeling that Maxwell was up to something and that he knew something he wasn't supposed to know. This got her a bit shaken up but she decided to shrug it off, while keeping it in mind that there could be danger looming.

Without saying another word to Maxwell, she trotted off to her office. Her secretary welcomed her and told her that she had sent some documents to her via email. Vivian thanked her and entered her office, settling down and bringing out her computer to work.

She had decided to come to work that day to clear her records and make sure that everyone was perfect from her side. This was because Scarlett was coming for the meeting that Saturday and she didn't want her to find any reason to embarrass her in public again.

Vivian was busy working when Richard strode into her office, handsomely draped in a royal blue suit. He wore a very unpleasant expression on his face which got Vivian worried as soon as she looked up at him.

“Good evening Richard. What has you so flustered? You don't look okay.” She inquired, gently pushing her laptop aside so that she could face Richard who was now sitting in front of her.

“A little bit worried, that's all.” His casual response came. Vivian arched her brow, wondering what was so casual about his current mood. He looked like something was eating him up and he said it's casual?

“Tell me Richard, I know all is not well.”

“Detective Roberts called and he wants you to come to the station for questioning.” Richard finally broke the news and Vivian's mood turned sour.

“Why does he do this all the time? What the fuck is his problem anyway?” Vivian's rage could be perceived easily. Her eyes had become hooded and her forehead clenched as she wondered why detective Roberts was so determined to prove that she killed her husband.

It's been thirteen years already and he hasn't been able to prove anything or find any evidence to prove that she committed murder so why isn't he giving up? Why would she even kill her own husband? It didn't make sense to her that he kept on digging up this case.

“Why is he so resilient? I'm sick of this! I'm not going to meet him, I have a tight schedule and a lot of work to catch up with.” She responded coldly, returning her gaze to her laptop.

Richard sighed deeply, rubbing his forehead with his thumb and index finger. He knew that ignoring the detective wasn't the best decision and would lead to further suspicion.

“You just have to go and find out what he wants or he's just going to have reasons to believe that you actually committed the crime.” He voiced out his thoughts and Vivian sighed defeatedly.

“This is honestly so frustrating, I've had it up to here with him. Why does he feel that I killed my husband? I thought this has already been sorted out.” She groaned.

“I understand, but just go there and find out what he wants.” He told her and she nodded.

They had a short discussion before Richard decided to leave to attend to some work of his own.

As soon as he stepped outside, he met Maxwell by the door, looking around like he was searching for something. His eyes narrowed as he wondered what Maxwell was doing there at that time.

“Good morning Maxwell.” He greeted him.

“Top of the morning to you too Mr Richard.” Maxwell returned, smiling.

“Did you want anything? Why are you standing around? Don't you have any work to do this morning?” Richard threw questions at him, trying to catch him off guard but Maxwell stood his ground, unfazed.

“I do, I was just passing by to get to the bathroom.” He pointed to the end of the hallway where the bathrooms were located. Richard nodded.

“Alright then. See you around.” He walked out, unable to shake the feeling that Maxwell was totally up to something.

Was he eavesdropping on their conversation? Could it be that he heard everything? He couldn't place a finger on anything but decided to be more careful as he didn't trust Maxwell at all.

As soon as he left, Maxwell grinned to himself and left, going back to his office.

Evening came soon and Vivian rounded off with her work before calling her driver to take her to the police station. Throughout the journey, she wore a weary look, sick and tired of all the run-arounds since her husband died. Why couldn't the detective just let this case die?

At some point, she got scared of what evidence the detective had found but she shrugged it off quickly.

Soon, the car came to a halt in front of the station and she made her way in to meet with detective Roberts. They exchanged greetings and she sat down to listen to whatever he had to say.

“You know Mrs Davenport, things would be easier for the both of us if you just tell me the truth because letting me expose you, could have worse consequences.” He started, grinning at her as he leaned on the desk slightly. His eyes were fixed on Vivian, trying to monitor her facial expressions and body language.

Vivian was not in any way moved by his threats, she didn't feel any kind of fear or guilt. Instead, she stared right back at him, her arms folded on her chest.

“Can you just show me the fucking evidence you invited me here to see? I didn't waste my precious time to come here and listen to this!” She demanded, getting pissed off. The detective chuckled, shaking his head as he took slow steps over to her.

“You play your game quite well Vivian, but I promise, I'm going to uncover the truth.” He told her and she let out a low grunt due to the frustration she was already feeling.

“You're seriously pissing me off! Just fucking tell me why I'm here!”

“You know what? Don't bother saying a thing. I'm not interested in whatever you have to say anymore. I shouldn't have come here in the first place.” She sprang up from the chair, her face depicting nothing but rage. She started to walk out but the detective called out to her, causing her to stop and turn to face him.

“What!?” She snapped at him.

“The drink you gave to your husband before he sadly passed away, what was in that drink?” His sudden question came and Vivian's heart sank into her stomach as the detective stared with a smirk at her.

“Juice, it was juice.” She answered quickly.

“We'll see.” He chuckled and she walked out without hesitation.

She got into her car and made a phone call. She really needed sex to cool off after what had happened in the station. She couldn't think of a better way to make herself happy again.

Her car came to a halt in front of the hotel in no time and she rushed in. She took a bath first and got cozy in nothing but her robe and then sipped some wine while waiting for her fuck boy to arrive.

Suddenly, her phone beeped and she picked it up. It was a text with a photo attachment and what was even stranger to her was that the number was an unknown number.

She opened the text only to find a picture of her entering the hotel a few moments ago. Her eyes widened in shock as she stared at the photo.

“I'm being stalked!” She yelled out.
