My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 61– Firelit Confessions

Ch. 61 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

The candles in her chamber flickered, their light thin and uncertain. Shadows moved across the walls, shaped by the fire in the hearth. Verdana was quiet outside, the city holding its breath. Inside, only two people remained, the silence between them pressing in.

Caden stood at the window, hands behind his back. His face was drawn, eyes shadowed from lack of sleep. When she entered, the air seemed to tighten around her. He stayed where he was, but something unspoken passed between them.

“You’re hiding from me,” he said quietly, his voice low, a blade against the silence.

Elara’s hands clenched at her sides. She took a step forward, then faltered. “I went to the woods,” she admitted, her voice trembling despite her effort to sound steady. “To the Temple of the Old Gods.”

Caden’s breath hitched. His chest tightened, a warning in its rhythm. “And what did you find?”

She swallowed hard. The words cameShe swallowed. The words scraped out. "You’re my tether. Through you, I could hold this kingdom together. Or break it." though struck. His expression went raw and vulnerable, then flared with fury, fire, and disbelief coiling into every movement. “So even prophecy sees me as a curse,” he spat, pacing the room in jagged, uneven steps. “Tell me, Elara… will you chain me to your throne or cast me aside to save it?”

Her voice broke, nearly lost to the crackling of the hearth. “Don’t you see? I don’t want to choose. I want you. I want Verdana. I cannot be asked to sacrifice one for the other.”

He stopped. His chest rose and fell, unsteady. Firelight caught the scars on his arm. She saw the veins beneath his skin, faintly lit, the mark of prophecy running through him.

“So you would risk everything,” he said, voice trembling with rage and disbelief, “because your heart refuses to bend?”

Elara moved closer, her hands unsteady. "I won’t risk it. I’ll fight. For you, for the kingdom, for what matters. But I can’t give up the part of me that still chooses. Do you think I could live with myself if I did?"

Caden laughed, sharp and bitter. “Freedom? You speak of freedom when the world demands sacrifices. When the Hollow Veil itself waits to claim me as your leash!”

She pressed her hands to his chest. "I won’t let it take you." Her voice shook. "You’re mine. Not theirs. Not fate’s. Mine."

He looked down at her, eyes flickering with shadows and longing, torn between relief and the knowledge that they stood on the precipice of doom. “And if I fall… if I become what the prophecy warns of… what then? Will your love survive a tether I cannot control?”

Her chest ached. The firelight caught in her hair. Her chest tightened. She stepped in, firelight glinting in her hair, and pressed her lips to his, searching. "Then we fight it together. We’ll do whatever it takes."fierce and raw, a collision of fire and fear. They moved as though the world itself might tear them apart in the next heartbeat. There was no gentleness, only urgency: desperate, bruising, consuming. Every touch was a question, every sigh a plea.

When they pulled apart, breathless, their foreheads pressed together, she whispered, “You are mine. Whatever doom they speak of, you are mine.”

He closed his eyes, holding on to her words, letting them settle. Even as he held her, the corners of the room stayed dark. The shadows didn’t leave.

“And if the prophecy wins?” he asked quietly, almost afraid to hear the answer. “If I am the tether that breaks the kingdom rather than binds it?”

Her hands tangled in his hair. “Then we will burn together. But I will not let you bear that alone. I swear it.”

He opened his eyes and searched hers, as if trying to read the truth behind every heartbeat. “You swear?”

“I swear.”

The words hung between them, thin and uncertain. Even as they held each other, the room felt heavy with what might come. Fate did not care for promises.

Caden’s forehead fell against hers. “Elara…” He spoke her name like a prayer, like a curse. “I am terrified. Terrified that my blood, my very being, will be the weapon they forge in your hands.”

She cupped his face, forcing him to meet her gaze. “And I am terrified too,” she admitted. “Terrified that I will fail. Terrified that loving you will cost more than I am willing to pay. But I cannot stop loving you. Not for the kingdom. Not for the crown. Not even for prophecy.”

He closed his eyes again, leaning into her touch, as if her certainty could shield him from the world. “Then we are damned together,” he whispered.

“Then we are damned together,” she echoed.

The fire in the hearth flickered. Shadows stretched across the walls, reaching toward them. The room held its breath, the knowledge between them sharp: love could wound as much as it healed.

They found each other again, slower now, holding on to the warmth before it faded. Her fingers traced the faint light under his skin, the mark of prophecy. Every line of him was familiar, both comfort and warning.

“Do you remember the legends?” she murmured between kisses, her voice trembling. “Of princesses forced to choose, of kings torn between love and loyalty?”

He nodded slowly, a faint smile touching his lips despite the tension. “I do. And yet, here we are, trying to carve a different path.”

She pressed her lips to his collarbone. Her heart beat hard against her ribs. "We’ll make our own way. Together. Even if the world turns against us. Even if fate tries to stop us."

His laugh was a soft, dark sound, mingling relief and sorrow. “Do you think it will be enough?”

“I do not know,” she admitted. “But it is all I have. You, me, this moment. The rest… we fight for it.”

The fire’s glow reflected in their eyes, igniting a spark of courage. Firelight caught in their eyes. Elara felt it - a hope edged with risk. They were rulers, lovers, and still afraid.ng, Elara.”

“Anything.”

“That if prophecy ever forces my hand, you will still see me as I am… not what they claim I will be.”

She brushed his cheek with her thumb. "I promise. I won’t let prophecy take you from me. Not in my eyes. Not ever."

He closed his eyes and leaned against her shoulder, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. “Then we burn together. But not yet. Not until we choose our own fate, not theirs.”

Her hands found his, fingers intertwining as if anchoring each other against the storm. “We will choose,” she said. “Together.”

And though the candles flickered and the shadows lingered, the room no longer felt empty. The world beyond the chamber still waited, full of dangers, full of demands, full of prophecy. But here, in this firelit cocoon, Elara and Caden claimed a fragile victory: a declaration that love, while not invincible, could defy fate, even if only for a moment.

In the quiet that followed, both felt it. Destiny tightening. The mark of prophecy under Caden’s skin. Every promise might be tested.

Still, they held on to each other. Their hearts beat hard. Fear and hope are intertwined.

For now, love was the only way they could fight back.

For now, they still had each other.
