My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 52 – The Mark

Ch. 52 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

Afternoon light spilled across the great hall, catching on the gold of the chandeliers and the slick marble underfoot. Nobles pressed in beside commoners, all of them summoned here, their eyes restless with curiosity, fear, and something like duty. Whispers flickered through the crowd, quick and sharp, carrying rumors of Prince Caden - of the silver marks crawling beneath his skin, of the sickness that had already reached every corner of Verdana.

Elara stood on the dais, the weight of her blue gown dragging at her shoulders, the crown pressing down with the memory of every ruler before her. Caden stood at her side, upright but too still, his skin washed pale, his eyes storm-gray and distant. Fever burned through him. Silver lines curled up his throat, pulsing with his heartbeat, catching the sunlight that spilled through the high windows.

From the crowd came whispers, growing like a tide:

“Look how they spread…”

“Unnatural, that glow…”

“The prince is cursed for certain…”

Elara lifted her hand. The room stilled, the hush thick and close, every breath held tight. She drew in air, steadying herself before she spoke.

“People of Verdana,” she began, voice carrying to every corner, “we gather today not in the shadow of fear, but in the light of truth. Our kingdom has faced darkness before. We have stood against corruption, against those who would see us fall, and we have prevailed - through unity, through faith in one another, through the bonds that make us stronger than any enemy.”

A few voices murmured agreement, but doubt pressed in from all sides. Elara caught it in the way a mother’s hand tightened around her child, in the quick, nervous glance of a merchant who needed the crown to hold steady.

“I know you have questions,” she said, her gaze moving over faces she’d come to know by the shape of their fear. “I know you wonder about the attacks, about what we’ve lost, about whether - ”

Caden stumbled.

He went down hard, the sound of his body hitting the marble sharp and final. His sword slipped from his grip and struck the floor, the clang splitting the hush wide open.“Caden!” Elara dropped to her knees, silk pooling around her legs. She pulled him close, his skin burning under her hands. The silver marks crawled higher, spilling across his neck and face, bright as molten metal.

“Elara…” His voice was weak, cracking with terror and confusion. “What’s happening to me? I can hear them - the voices in the shadows, calling my name. They want… they want - ” His words dissolved into a groan, the crowd jerked back. Whispers snapped into cries, then broke into full-throated screams. Into cries, cries into screams.

“The prince is cursed!”

“The darkness has taken him!”

“The queen - look at her. " Elara stared at her hands, horror tightening in her chest. Where her skin met his, the silver lines had begun to crawl up her arms. The Mark was hers now, too. ed “Guards!” Her voice cut through the chaos. The soldiers froze, their hands hovering over their swords, their eyes wide and fixed on the silver crawling up her arms. Fear held them fast in place.

“Don’t leave me,” Caden whispered against her neck, words torn from despair. “Please, Elara. Don’t let them take me away. Don’t let me disappear into nothing.”

“Never,” she swore, holding him tighter as silver light flared higher along her arms. “I won’t let them - ”

But the crowd’s panic rose, voices merging into a chant that shook the stone walls:

“The queen is cursed!”

“The bloodline is tainted!”

“Save us from the shadow!”

Elara’s eyes found Arinelle in the crowd. Every line of her face was drawn with concern, but behind her blue eyes, something sharp waited. Satisfaction. The look of a predator who’d scented blood.

This is what you wanted, Elara thought. To see me broken, love turned into a weapon, the same stain crawling over both of us. Now they would look to Arinelle for rescue.

The panic escalated:

“Cast out the cursed!”

“Save the kingdom!”

“The crown must be cleansed!”

Caden shuddered, the silver light throwing wild shadows across the floor. Elara knelt on the cold marble, his burning body heavy in her lap - the choice pressed in - love or crown, heart or kingdom.

The Mark kept spreading, relentless. Elara forced herself to think - strategy, not panic. She’d studied for moments like this, watched, learned, trained. The kingdom was a living thing, and she would treat this as a sickness, a threat to body and spirit both.

“People of Verdana,” she called, voice steel under emotion, “listen to me. This affliction, whatever its nature, is not a sentence. It is a challenge - a trial that we will face together.”

She began to outline measures, the words chosen for clarity and reassurance:

Silver tendrils kept crawling up her arms as she spoke. Fear pressed in, trying to drown her, but she held to what she’d learned - how to inspire without turning cold, how to act without losing her heart.

She touched Caden’s face gently, letting her energy flow, whispering to him, “We face this together. I will not abandon you, and I will not allow fear to conquer Verdana.”

The crowd’s cries faded, just a little. Uncertainty still hung in the air, but her voice held them. They saw her courage, her steadiness, the shape of a plan. Not everyone would understand, but hope had a way of taking root when someone showed them how.

She gave further instruction to the nobles, her words diplomatic yet firm, blending necessity with reassurance:

She walked a thin line - holding the people’s trust, keeping them safe, and still wanting nothing more than to save Caden. She had to be a healer and commander, a mother and queen, a lover and a strategist, all at once.

The silver light surged toward her heart, but she did not retreat. She inhaled slowly, grounding herself in clarity. “This Mark,” she said to the assembly, “will not break us. We will endure it, learn from it, and defeat it - not with fear, but with unity and courage. The kingdom stands, and so will every one of you who places hope above panic.”

Caden’s fevered hand tightened around hers. His gaze, though faint with exhaustion, found hers and mirrored the same determination. They were bound, not just by love, but by duty: his recovery, her kingdom, their shared future.

Outside, Verdana waited, silent. Inside the great hall, Elara lifted her hands, letting the silver light climb where all could see. She kept it steady, refusing to let it run wild. Each pulse was a promise - they would survive this, together.

The crowd shifted. Fearful murmurs softened into uncertain trust. Nobles traded glances - some tight with frustration, others grudgingly impressed by Elara’s steadiness. Arinelle’s eyes stayed sharp, but even she couldn’t look away from the force of Elara’s will.

Heart and crown. Love and duty. They’d crashed together, but for the first time, Elara wondered if she could hold onto both - and not lose herself in the process.

The silver lines still pulsed, but no longer wildly. Caden’s breath came easier as he leaned into her. She’d faced the Mark, the crowd’s fear, the sting of betrayal - and she was still here. Still standing.

This was only the beginning. But for the first time, Elara knew one truth with unshakable clarity: the queen who survives is not the one who hides from darkness, but the one who shines through it.

She would save Caden. She would save Verdana. She would do it without giving up her heart. Sometimes the heart’s greatest victory and its worst defeat are the same choice, made in the same breath, echoing on and on.
