My Husband Chose Her Over Me

Chapter 72 – The Court of Lies

Ch. 72 / 213 Mar 25, 2026

A thousand flames flickered in the great hall. Candlelight slid over marble pillars and the bright silks draped across the room. Nobles gathered in small groups, their laughter quiet, their words measured. Their eyes watched everything.

Elara sat on Verdana’s throne, the crown pressing hard against her temples. She had faced darkness that swallowed the sky and led armies when the ground broke open beneath her. But this room, thick with perfume and hidden threats, unsettled her more than any battlefield.

“Your Majesty.” A baroness bowed low, silks whispering. “May the gods grant you strength in these… turbulent days.”

Behind her fan, the woman whispered to another: If the tether burns again, she is finished.

Elara’s grip tightened on her armrest. She forced her voice steady. “Verdana does not tremble before storms. And neither should her court.”

The words silenced the whispers for a heartbeat. Only a heartbeat.

Then the doors burst open.

Every candle guttered, shadows swaying as though bowing to the woman who entered.

Arinelle.

She swept into the hall, draped in shadowed finery, her crown of widow’s pearls glinting like tears frozen in mockery. A hush fell. She moved like an aria given flesh, every step measured, every gesture theatrical.

In her hands, scrolls bound with crimson thread. Seals unbroken.

“Evidence.” Her voice rang with a blend of velvet and steel. “Proof that this throne is a fraud.”

Gasps rippled through the chamber. A few nobles clutched pearls. Others leaned forward, hungry.

Arinelle let the silence swell before she struck.

“Elara Virell is no queen — merely a puppet bound by pagan chains. Verdana bleeds because of her weakness, her lies, her cursed tether.”

She tossed the scrolls onto the marble. The threads slipped loose, and pages scattered across the floor. Treaties, letters, oaths—each one stamped with Elara’s seal.

It was a careful display, meant to look convincing.

Whispers surged like a storm.

“Signed with her own hand…”

“Pacts with the Hollow Veil…”

“A crown won with blood and shadow…”

Elara stood. Her voice was tight with anger, not fear.

“Lies! Every page, venom spun from your hatred, Arinelle. You betray not me, but Verdana itself.”

Arinelle’s lips curved. “Spoken like a guilty soul. Denial is the first note in the song of liars.”

The crowd shifted, some faces pale, others almost amused.

Then — a groan.

Elara froze.

Caden stumbled beside her. He pressed a hand to his chest. His scar burned, red streaks running up his arm. His sword slipped from his grip and hit the floor.

Screams tore the chamber apart.

Arinelle’s voice rose above them all, sharp as a conductor’s cue:

“See! See how the tether burns! Her consort is cursed, his blood a herald of ruin. She binds Verdana’s fate to corruption!”

“Caden!” Elara dropped to his side, clutching his shoulders. His face twisted with pain, sweat pouring, fire searing his veins.

“Stay with me,” she hissed. “Do not give her your strength.”

His teeth clenched. “Elara… I can’t—”

“Yes, you can. You are mine. Not hers. Not prophecy’s.”

The words left her raw and unyielding.

But already the chamber fractured.

“Abdicate!” a duke shouted. “The storm is her fault!”

“Kill the tether before it kills us!” another cried.

“Guards! End this madness before Verdana drowns!”

The hall broke apart in chaos.

And then — smoke.

Masked figures slipped through the columns, blades glinting. Guards clashed steel against them. Nobles shrieked as daggers flew, blood splashing across silk.

The court’s lies had turned to violence.

“Elara!” Sebastian’s voice broke through the noise. He pushed toward her, his blade stained red. “This is all for show. They want you to break. Don’t let them.”

Arinelle’s laughter carried from the dais. She moved through the chaos, untouched, her gown catching the light.

“Illusion?” She plucked one of the forged scrolls from the floor, holding it aloft. “Tell me, dear Sebastian, does this seal not bear your queen’s own hand? Her vow to deliver Verdana’s soul to the Hollow Veil?”

Sebastian spat, eyes blazing. “I know her hand better than you know your own lies. Forgery drips from every line!”

But the nobles wavered, their fear heavier than faith.

Elara stood, steadying Caden as he leaned against her, still shaking. Her voice was sharp:

“You think parchment holds more truth than blood? Look at me! I bled for Verdana. I burned with her people when the sky split. I stood against prophecy itself while you cowered in silks.”

“Strong words,” Arinelle crooned, “from a queen who hides behind her cursed consort.”

Elara’s crown caught the firelight. “Your power is built on fear, Arinelle. I won’t give in to it.”

Arinelle’s eyes narrowed. She lifted her hand, and Caden doubled over. His scar burned brighter, as if she was pulling at it.

“Elara—!” he gasped, dropping to his knees.

“No!” Elara caught him, her fury snapping like lightning. She glared at Arinelle. “Release him!”

“Strike him down,” Arinelle sang sweetly to the court. “Prove your loyalty to Verdana. Sever the tether, and I will close the storm.”

The nobles erupted again, some pleading, some demanding.

“Elara, save us!”

“Spare Verdana, if not yourself!”

“She must choose!”

The prophecy’s drumbeat thundered in her skull: Her tether shall bind or break her.

Elara drew her sword.

The hall froze.

“Enough.” Her voice was steady. “This court is not a stage for your lies, Arinelle. It belongs to Verdana. As long as I live, you won’t take it from me.”

She leveled her blade at Arinelle, anger tightening her grip.

“You want my throne? Take it — by steel, not by whispers. Face me as queen to usurper, not as a coward draped in forged ink.”

The chamber gasped. Even the nobles drew back.

Arinelle’s smile stayed in place, but her voice dropped. “So be it. If words won’t win, blood will.”

The masked intruders surged. The hall became a stage of war once more.

And above it all, Caden’s scar burned brighter than ever.

The prophecy thundered, louder, closer: Her tether shall bind or break her.

Elara’s crown pressed down on her. She gripped her sword. Her chest ached.

In the chaos, she knew her next choice would either break Verdana or save it.
