The cavern pressed in. Shadows pooled high above, and the ceiling vanished from sight. Crimson crystal threaded the stone walls. It pulsed faintly, as if the place itself had a heartbeat. The air was heavy with the stench of sulfur and something scorched. It was sharp enough to sting the back of my throat.
Caden was sprawled across the stone altar at the center, wrists raw and bleeding where the rune-marked chains bit into his skin. His breathing was shallow, uneven, but his eyes stayed fixed and bright - driven by determination not to give Arinelle the satisfaction of breaking him.
"Behold!" Arinelle's voice crashed through the cavern like a thunderclap, her black silk robes embroidered with silver serpents seeming to slither in the torchlight. She raised her arms to the crowd of hooded figures that surrounded the altar in concentric circles. "Tonight, the false reign of cowards ends! Tonight, Verdana's true gods awaken from their slumber, and I claim the destiny denied to me for years!"
Arinelle held an obsidian dagger, its blade catching what little light there was. Behind her, Kaela stepped forward, careful with the crown of jagged crimson crystal in her hands. It pulsed faintly, as if it might be alive.
"The old ways shall return," Arinelle continued, her voice rising to a fever pitch. "No more shall we bow to weak queens who cower behind castle walls while their people suffer. No more shall noble blood claim divine right while true believers starve in shadows!"
The cultists answered her with a ragged cheer, but beneath that, Caden caught low mutters and sidelong glances traded between different groups. Their allegiance was uncertain, and though united for now, fractures were clear - a brittle sort of unity teetering on the edge.
"You speak of gods," Caden rasped, his voice hoarse but carrying clearly through the chamber. "But I see only thieves arguing over stolen trinkets."
Arinelle whirled toward him, her face contorting with rage. "Silence, you fool! You know nothing of sacrifice, nothing of - "
"Nothing?" Caden let out a short, rough laugh. "I see you for what you are. Not chosen, not holy. Just desperate, hoping for anything that might put you above the rest."
"He speaks poison!" shouted a voice from the crowd. "Cut out his tongue!"
But Kaela stepped forward, her amber eyes glittering with something far more dangerous than religious fervor - a calculating hunger for leadership. "Perhaps we should listen to what our sacrifice has to say. After all..." She turned to face Arinelle directly, her voice dropping to a silky whisper that somehow carried to every corner of the cavern. "Why should you be the one to wear the crown? Why should you speak for the gods? Wouldn't our cause be safer under someone who sees the true path to power?"
The chamber fell silent save for the drip of condensation and the crackle of torches. Arinelle's knuckles went white around the dagger's hilt.
"I am the Voice of the Hollow Veil," she said, her words carefully controlled. "I have led us through the dark years, guided us to this moment of triumph. The crown is mine by right."
"Right?" Kaela laughed, the sound like silver bells hiding razor edges. "What right? The right of the strong to rule the weak? How very... traditional of you. How very much like the nobles you claim to despise."
The crowd shifted, with some calling for Arinelle and others now raising their voices for Kaela. Sides began to form as faces turned wary, alliances realigning just as quickly as they had formed.
"I bled for this cause!" Kaela's voice rose, addressing the crowd now rather than her rival. "I sacrificed everything - my family, my station, my very soul - to bring us to this precipice of glory. I took these risks not for the gods, but because I know I am the only one strong and clever enough to lead us to victory. While others spoke pretty words from the shadows, I walked among our enemies, gathering their secrets, earning their trust only to betray them utterly!"
"You betrayed them for your own advancement," Arinelle snarled. "Everything you did was calculated, cold. Where was your passion? Where was your faith?"
"Faith?" Kaela gestured dismissively. "Faith is for the weak. Results are for the strong. And I have delivered results while you..." She paused, letting her gaze sweep over the assembled cultists. "While you played at being a prophet."
Now the crowd split visibly, with some brandishing weapons and lining up behind Arinelle, and others surging toward Kaela. Divided loyalties were now out in the open, and violence felt inevitable.
Through it all, Caden watched with grim satisfaction, knowing his words could pry apart their fragile unity. "Look at them," he called out, his voice somehow cutting through the chaos. "Your faithful followers, tearing at each other like starved dogs over a bone. This is what your cause has bred - not righteousness, but rabid ambition."
"Shut your mouth!" Arinelle struck him across the face, the sound echoing off the stone walls. Blood ran from his split lip, but still he smiled.
"Strike me again," he whispered, his eyes never leaving hers. "Show them what kind of leader you truly are. Show them the fear behind your fury."
"I fear nothing!" But her hand trembled, and everyone could see it.
Kaela seized the moment like a predator pouncing on wounded prey. "She fears me," she announced to the crowd. "She fears that I might succeed where she has merely survived. Look at her - shaking like a leaf before a man in chains. Is this your mighty Voice? Is this the woman you would follow into battle against Elara's armies?"
"At least I don't hide my ambitions behind false piety," Arinelle shot back. "You speak of sacrifice, but what have you given up that you didn't expect to reclaim tenfold? Every move you've made has been calculated for your own benefit."
"And every move you've made has been driven by your need to feel important!" Kaela's mask of composure finally slipped, revealing the raw hunger beneath. "You collect followers like a child collects dolls, playing at power while real strength passes you by!"
The cavern broke into chaos. Cultists lunged at each other, some grabbing for Arinelle, others for Kaela. Fists and blades moved in the torchlight, blood marking the stone floor. The ritual fell apart, months of tension snapping all at once.
"Yes!" Caden's laughter rose above the melee, terrible and triumphant. "This is your great unity! This is the foundation upon which you would build a new kingdom! Thieves and murderers, every one of you, squabbling over imaginary crowns while the realm burns around your ears!"
A blade caught someone across the cheek. A woman in torn robes clawed at the face of the person beside her. The crown slipped from Kaela's hands. It hit the stone floor - ignored as the fighting closed in.
"Stop!" Arinelle's voice cracked with desperation. "This is what he wants! Can't you see? He's turning us against each other!"
But it was too late. No one was listening now, their dreams for leadership and power overriding any last hope for unity. Kaela stood over a fallen rival, blood on her hands and the crown clutched tight - a symbol of everything she was willing to do to claim her place.
"Perhaps," she panted, "the gods have already chosen their queen."
"The gods," Caden said quietly, his voice somehow reaching every ear despite the chaos, "have nothing to do with this. You are not chosen. You are not blessed. You are simply desperate people clinging to power you never deserved, fighting over scraps while the feast passes you by."
He looked directly at Arinelle, then at Kaela, his gaze unflinching despite his bonds. "You want to know what true sacrifice looks like? What real devotion means? It isn't this petty squabbling over who gets to wear the pretty crown. It isn't torturing prisoners or burning villages in the name of gods who probably find you as pathetic as I do."
"Then what is it?" Kaela demanded, the crown heavy in her hands. "Enlighten us, oh wise one. What is this great truth you think you possess?"
Caden's smile was sad now, almost pitying. "True devotion requires no reward. True sacrifice asks for nothing in return. I lie here in chains not because I seek glory or power, but because there are things in this world worth suffering for. People worth dying for."
His voice grew stronger, carrying a conviction that cut through the cultists' fury like a blade through silk. "My queen - my true queen - will come for me. Not because I am important, but because she values every life under her protection. That is what rulership means. That is what divinity looks like."
"Your precious Elara isn't coming," Arinelle sneered, but uncertainty flickered in her eyes. "She doesn't even know where you are."
"Doesn't she?" Caden's smile widened. "Then why do I hear steel on stone? Why does the very air taste of lightning?"
The cultists fell silent, straining their ears. And in that silence, carried on the cavern's unnatural acoustics, came the distant ring of armored boots on stone. The sound of an army on the march, growing closer with each heartbeat.
Kaela lifted the crown toward her head, desperation making her movements jerky and graceless. "Then we finish this now. The ritual - "
"The ritual is already finished," Caden interrupted. "You've shown your true faces to each other and to your gods. You've revealed the rot at the heart of your cause. What more blood could possibly satisfy deities who feast on betrayal and hatred?"
The marching grew louder. Torchlight began to flicker in the tunnel mouths that led to the surface. And still the cultists stood frozen, torn between fear and fury, between the crown's promise and the approaching doom.
"Choose quickly," Caden advised, his voice almost conversational now. "Will you face her as would-be queens squabbling over a trinket? Or will you finally unite behind something greater than your own ambitions, if that is even possible for you?"
Even as he spoke, Caden knew it would not matter. These people had never looked past their own desires for power. They were not chosen; they were just lost, drawn together by anger and personal gain rather than conviction or purpose.
The crimson veins in the cavern walls pulsed faster. The walls flickered, as if the cavern itself were waiting for what came next. He closed his eyes. Thought of golden hair and gentle hands. Of a queen who ruled through love rather than fear. Of a kingdom that might yet survive the darkness closing around it.
The ritual of blood was about to begin in earnest.
